Does anyone else hate going for walks?

I have disabilities so it can be difficult and painful for me especially as paths and pavements are often so uneven and I really struggle with hills but I also find it incredibly boring. If there's some wildlife to look at it then I can enjoy it for a bit and I can enjoy walking in cities if we stop regularly to see shops and museums or interesting statues but otherwise I hate it and find it utterly tedious.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Yes. I don't mind a short stroll, or to walk to adult DC's flat in town, but I cannot stand going for long walks just for the sake of going for a long walk.

I think my loathing stems from my teens. My Dad died when I was still at school, which was miles away from where we lived. I had to walk over a mile to the bus stop every day in all weathers. Since DM couldn't drive (tried but utterly hopeless) we didn't have a car and had to walk everywhere for shopping and lugging it home again, when we went out, everything. The railway station was even further than the bus stop. I got to the point where I absolutely hated the thought of having to walk. When I eventually learned to drive and got a car - that was it. Such a relief that I wouldn't have to walk anywhere again if I didn't want to.

Whenever someone suggests going for a nice long walk, my heart sinks. Aarghhh - NO!

I came here to agree then realised that I’m the OP!

Thanks to all who replied. I still detest walking and it’s still difficult for me between my disabilities and asthma. Sympathies to all who have been repeatedly dragged on walks by enthusiastic family members and friends.

Only if I have the dog with me, otherwise I just feel aimless

Love a walk if it's a nice day and it involves a cafe with tea and cake

Ah, yeah and bored.

I take dihydrocodeine and get on with my walk otherwise in complete agony for days. Love being out in nature. Its a form of distraction for how shit things can be each day.

I love walking as an adult, alone (dogs who don't faff around, and sometimes my husband, are tolerable companions). I hate a slow, rambling group walk, and I hated walks for their own sake as a kid. I don't like going at other people's pace. Hate guided tours for the same reason, they make me feel trapped.

Edited to add: I absolutely never listen to podcasts or music. I walk to be with my own thoughts and the sounds of the environment.

God I loathe walking. I think it stems from my childhood and being made to go on walks. All I can think of is 'once I've got to the destination, I have to go all the way back again'. I find it impossible to enjoy it. Bimbling to a cafe or a nice bar is a different matter altogether - I can bimble for hours!

Ah, I am the opposite. I absolutely have to have a podcast or music to listen to otherwise I get so bored walking the same walk (more or less) every day. It's been a godsend for me and being in my own thoughts on a walk is always troublesome as I end up thinking too much about stuff and getting a bit depressed.

However, I do agree about walking at your pace and not having a dog that dithers about.

I have no disabilities and can walk for miles if necessary, but walks just for the sake of walking I don't like. I think lockdown really finished me off with walking, it reminds me of prison exercise and once the world opened up again I stopped wanting to walk.

mushypees · 04/12/2024 16:28

Oh yes I agree! It's ok if something to look at like next to a train line but otherwise urgh.
