Can anyone recommend a car maintenance course to help with the basics?

Check out your local college evening classes, they may well have courses.

Exactly as above. The local college will do a few weeks course or you can do something like a gnvq if you want more.

There are also a lot of videos on YouTube for the basic stuff. Usually one for your exact model of car too. Haynes manuals have a page.
