Feeling so embarrassed after anaesthesia. Please tell me this has happened to others?

A week ago, I had a surgery. I was extremely nervous before being put to sleep.

When I came round, I was in a lot of pain but my throat was so dry I couldn’t say “hey, I’m in pain” , so I just started whining “ouch “ “ouch “.

Then I kept taking off the oxygen mask because it was annoying me. I also asked multiple times where my car was and had to be reminded I was in hospital at least twice. I also kept waving to thin air. The nurse was nice enough but I could tell I wasn’t her favourite patient 😳.

Now I remember it, I’m so embarrassed and feel like I was probably a real pain in the arse. Coincidentally, I had to be kept in post op because I was groggier and woozier than expected.

Reassure me please!

Don’t worry OP - I got really aggressive & kept telling everyone they were supposed to be on “ I’m A Celebrity”!!

I did something similar, I was trying to 'fight' the medical staff because they allowed Ant and Dec to carry out my operation.

They had to get the surgeon to come and reassure me he had carried it out.

OP I wouldn't worry, I get quite aggressive after GA and always come out fighting. Which is amazing really!

Dreamingofasandybeach · 18/08/2023 20:18

I wouldn't worry about it love. A few years back I had wisdom tooth surgery and I woke up fine, the girl coming round next to me on the ward was howling kind of like a wounded animal until the nurses came to see her (to me it felt like it went on for ages but im sure it wasnt long and only a few minutes). It was annoying but it was fine, coming round from anesthesia is a big thing and everyone reacts different to it xx

TiredCatLady · 18/08/2023 20:19

Completely normal - probably mild compared to some. Don’t worry the staff have seen it all.

Hope you’re healing well and wishing a speedy recovery xx

jamimmi · 18/08/2023 20:22

Don't worry. DH had a GS and was insistant he had 12 kids ( we have 2) wanted to know why carrot, brocoli cauliflower and strawberry weren't visiting. The nurse who is know was laughing her head off when she told me!

beachbitch · 18/08/2023 20:22

I cry when I come round. They’ve seen it all so I wouldn’t worry OP.

MidlandCatGirl · 18/08/2023 20:25

My shame started before the proper anaesthetic when I had a cannula violently shoved into the back of my hand.

I thought the nurse was reaching out to hold my hand, we then had a weird panicked hand wrestle when I realised what was happening. I then had a pre-anaesthetic sedative injected via the cannula and after a few seconds bellowed “Oh! I feel woozy. WOOZY!!”.

When I came round from surgery there was a nurse who had literally just removed the tube from my throat - I apologised for not being able to talk as “I’ve just had an operation y’know” whilst waving my wrist ID band at him. I then saw the medical brand name on it which happened to be Shazam. I immediately thought of Bo Selecta, started giggling and said “Shazam” at him.

dudsville · 18/08/2023 20:25

Argh, I've rtft and shouldn't have a i have a surgery next week.

Icantfindmykeys · 18/08/2023 20:25

Omg I had to be restrained for my own safety I was flailing around pushing people away!

Sclover23 · 18/08/2023 20:26

I asked my nurse to get Keanu Reeves on the phone as I’d worked out the secrets of the Matrix 🤣

WhatAboutMyIcecream · 18/08/2023 20:29

I woke up thinking I’d fallen asleep while looking after toddler ds2 and was frantic thinking I’d lost him. None of the medical staff batted an eyelid and just reassured me he was ok until realised where I was. I’d imagine it must happen all the time.

Maraa · 18/08/2023 20:31

I came round and cried for my ex boyfriend who I hadn’t been with for years and actually hated with a passion, I was confused and went back in time! Don’t worry, we’ve all been therr

What a pointless and unpleasant comment.

I would like to think medical professionals would have enough empathy to know that, even if they have seen it all before, for the patient it is an unusual and embarrassing experience

Maraa · 18/08/2023 20:32

Also, being put to sleep I must have looked absolutely insane, I was convinced I could fight it! When counting back to 10 I had my eyes as wide as I could like a mad woman. I think I got to about 7, dread to think how my face was when I was out to sleep lol

Latenightreader · 18/08/2023 20:32

I sang ‘I am Woman hear me Roar’ and then gave a lecture about the First World War and why we had a responsibility to live good lives because the people who died in that war couldn’t. In my defence it was in 2018 and I work in the heritage sector so there were a lot of War centenary things about.

billy1966 · 18/08/2023 20:34

I was mid surgery many years ago (large cyst removal) and bit the hand of the poor nurse, hard!.....distinctly remember it, then was clearly knocked out completely.
They apologised to me, afterwards, whilst I was asking about the poor nurse.

I had taken a lump out of her hand.
Poor woman.
I was a teen.
I think they very much felt the anesthesiologist had fxxked up.

LovelyDayInnit · 18/08/2023 20:36

Family member screamed for some time, kept trying to throw themselves off the bed (with their eyes closed) and ripped out the tube that has been carefully placed under GA...

iknowwhymummysporridgewascold · 18/08/2023 20:38

I came round from a GA shouting and panicking as I didn't remember where I was and was terrified. Until I got tea and toast and it was the best tea and toast I'd ever had!

BarbieDesvelada · 18/08/2023 20:39

What anaesthetic causes people to react a bit out of character? I had a procedure in May and when I woke around I just said ''is it done, really''.
The anaesthetic I was given was fentanyl and I nearly died because when the anaesthesiologist asked the theatre nurse for 1 of fentanyl, I shrieked ''fentanyl!'' and he said it's ok, you're not buying it in a park, I've been an anaesthetist for 18 years. So my sliiiightly embarrassing reaction was before I'd had any anaesthetic.

Ichabodandme · 18/08/2023 17:21

I remember the nurse kept telling me to put my clothes back on and cover up after I came round from sedation into the recovery area where there were other patients 😁 So I wouldn’t worry too much - they have seen and heard it all before!

Omg I'm sorry but this just made me LOL 🤣🙈

hellywelly3 · 18/08/2023 20:40

I woke up after having my tonsils removed farting loads. I remember being a bit aware what I was doing but having no control! There was a male patient opposite in recovery and his nurse said I think this is a good time to take you back to the ward and he was like yes I agree!! Mortifying!

hellywelly3 · 18/08/2023 20:41

I was in my 30’s not a kid!

Zeroperspective · 18/08/2023 20:41

I demanded the nurse to get the invoices posted out and then told him he was useless and I'd just do it myself, he promised to send them if I had a nap.....I woke up and he winked at me and told me all the invoices were in the post 🙈😂 I worked in accounts at the time and we ended up laughing about it. He told me some real horror stories and told me not to worry as he thought I was hilarious

That's unnecessarily aggressive

CanIGoHomeNowPlease · 18/08/2023 20:44

when I had my wisdom teeth out I made quite the scene.

They had to put pads on the sides of the bed as I was banging my head on them, pulled all my swabs out, cried uncontrollably wanted my mum (was 23) and then rolled over onto my front and assumed my sleeping position and promptly fell asleep.

Woke up with my face stuck to my pillow with my own blood. 😬

Pebblesflintstoneandbambamrubble · 18/08/2023 20:45

I pulled my back out last year

I'm not joking when I say I couldn't get out of bed-ive never felt pain like it

After an 8 hour wait for an ambulance, they finally arrived, bringing lots of lovely gas and air with them

I've had 6 labour's and never had any pain relief so have never tried it before

There is something in that stuff that seemed to send me loopy-i ranted on about how 'Boris is a cunt' 'ill never vote tory' 'I won't be friends with anyone who votes tory' and 'he's the reason I don't speak to my tory voting cunt of a mother-did you know dp,she votes TORY!'

I have zero interest in politics-and i don't speak to my mother because she's just a cunt (who does vote tory but that's her choice)

My poor dp was horrified and spent 20 minutes either trying to shut me up/take away the lovely gas and air

I don't remember, but he swears blind I kicked him at least twice (and he did have bruises on his legs) while hissing at him to 'shut the fuck up'

I finally got some of the good stuff while in a&e-and spent the 20 minute drive home (he was driving) singing '3 lions' 'glory glory man utd!' and 'sweet Caroline'

I hate football

I wouldn't worry-dps aunt is a nurse and she says she's seen/heard it all before
