Feeling so embarrassed after anaesthesia. Please tell me this has happened to others?

A week ago, I had a surgery. I was extremely nervous before being put to sleep.

When I came round, I was in a lot of pain but my throat was so dry I couldn’t say “hey, I’m in pain” , so I just started whining “ouch “ “ouch “.

Then I kept taking off the oxygen mask because it was annoying me. I also asked multiple times where my car was and had to be reminded I was in hospital at least twice. I also kept waving to thin air. The nurse was nice enough but I could tell I wasn’t her favourite patient 😳.

Now I remember it, I’m so embarrassed and feel like I was probably a real pain in the arse. Coincidentally, I had to be kept in post op because I was groggier and woozier than expected.

Reassure me please!

I apparently told one of the theatre practitioners that I wanted to take her to The Ritz in London and do all manner of things to her. I also told her I'd put my best pants on for her, but that the receptionist in A&E took them off me?

I'm married (to a man as far as I know), and I'm not aware I've been a closet lesbian in the past, but who knows! Oh - and I didn't even go via A&E 😂

Me, I was screaming at 35 years of age for my dad.x

ElizaWinter · 18/08/2023 17:59

I kept telling the surgeon how clever he was and how grateful I was. Blush
Mortified later of course!

I’m a Paeds nurse and for some children anaesthetic makes them hysterical/screaming etc uncontrollably it’s really horrible to see but others are just drowsy and a bit teary. They usually get plenty pain relief in theatre So when they come out they are comfy but of course you don’t know that until they are awake. My own son had some day surgery and was hysterical on waking he ended up with diihydrocodeine and a big sleep and extra 4 hours observation fun times

Also a paeds nurse and came on to say the exact same thing. Usually after another sleep and waking up on their own they are a different child. Trying to get parents to just leave them alone and let them sleep can be a challenge.

I had a endoscopy and when they tried to wake me apparently I was trying to hit them all and telling them to fuck off 😳

They all found it hilarious as I'm a very quiet, polite person and they said its always the nice ones that do it 😭😂😂

ElizaWinter · 18/08/2023 18:00

He came to see how I was and I was still off my face. To be honest I blathered on to anyone would listen for the rest of that day iirc

PaperLanterns · 18/08/2023 18:02

Relax, I tried to crack onto the surgeon after my appendectomy. 😎

CrepuscularCritter · 18/08/2023 18:02

Age 17 me told the dentist he had amazing eyes.
Age 40 something me insisted I had seen a lion. Actually I was right and there was a toy lion on the recovery room window ledge for any kids arriving there.

I think most people are out of sorts after general anaesthetic. I demanded my phone as I had some very important calls to make and also a manicure. Not the most rationale response

Rockschooldropout · 18/08/2023 18:02

I came round from from a sinus op 26 years ago .. with a racing heart and shaking furiously shouting I’m dying ! I didn’t realise they used cocaine to cauterise the sinuses and I was basically off my tits ..

Other ops I’ve usually woken up and hurled all over the place …
as an ex nurse on a surgical ward myself I can tell you they’ve seen it all so please don’t worry

DontBeAnArse · 18/08/2023 18:04

I was effing & blinding, just generally swearing like a trooper.
I though I was dreaming at first but once home it hit me that I was actually sweating my head off. It’s been over a decade and I’m still cringing about it. They probably laugh about it at their Christmas party.

Runnerinthenight · 18/08/2023 18:05

I had a D&C procedure having had a missed miscarriage.

I somehow got out of bed and still had the gown on, only my arse was bare and everyone could see my big gross fanny pad.... gross!!

Serendipitoushedgehog · 18/08/2023 18:06

Very normal! I woke up and did a blood curdling scream 😱

Topseyt123 · 18/08/2023 18:07

I wouldn't worry about it. People react to drugs in a variety of different ways, and the drugs used for general anaesthesia are pretty strong.

They'll have seen it all before. You won't be the first (or last) by a long way.

FreeWillyWale · 18/08/2023 18:07

Normal. I asked to hold the hands of the male and female nurses who were married and told them they were like parents to me 🙃

recyclemeagain · 18/08/2023 18:07

I did the same with the oxygen mask after my emcs, kept pulling the mask off and insisting it was just annoying. Also demanded a bed bath apparently!
My friend had a GA for something else and had a sudden memory one day of her chatting up the poor junior doctor when she was coming round from the anaesthetic. She tried to be sultry and removed her hospital gown to show him her boobs all the while singing the stripper music loudly.
When she had to go back to the hospital a year later for another procedure the nurses all remembered her and assured her it was ok but that it had also given them all a giggle at the time!
So I'm sure you are quite ok OP.

AndrewGarfieldsLaptop · 18/08/2023 18:08

I use to be a recovery nurse and trust me, I've seen worse.

Fireroselily · 18/08/2023 18:08

It was uncontrollable crying for me OP. Don't worry about it

Rockschooldropout · 18/08/2023 18:08

Oh and when dd was nine she had a big operation to remove a bone tumour from her femur , place a bone graft and titanium rods .. she was hooked up to an epidural so pain free but when she woke she was sobbing hysterically and demanded to go home , then told the consultant who had spent 4 hours operating on her who popped by her bed in recovery that she hated him 🙈🙈

largeprintagathachristie · 18/08/2023 18:08

Yeah, everyone’s loopy after an anaesthetic, don’t worry at all.

After just a minor procedure with sedation, not a full anaesthetic, my mother drove herself home but decided to buy a barbecue on the way. (She didn’t need a barbecue.)

Then, as she was near a car showroom, she popped in, got chatting to a salesman and decided to trade in her car there and then. And while signing the paperwork in the guy’s office she saw he had a sandwich wrapped up on his desk and asked if she could have it. After eating his sandwich she then ate his apple. And then drove off the forecourt in a new to her second hand car.

Lesson is to absolutely have someone with you if they say you should. (DM hadn’t told anyone about the appointment.)

The car stuff was all undone the next day when she realised what she’d done, and luckily was covered by a cooling off period. The guy did say that perhaps he should have known something wasn’t quite right when she ate his lunch…

Tumbleweed101 · 18/08/2023 18:08

I had sedation for a tooth extraction. I got out the dentist ok but was completely obsessed with needing gauze for the gap that had been left. My brother humoured me and got some. It never got opened lol.

sahm9 · 18/08/2023 18:09

I had an an ablation surgery on my heart where they had to wake me up for part of the surgery whilst I was still being operated on, I was shouting ‘your a wizard Harry’ and kept asking the surgeon if he ‘liked Yorkshire puddings’ at my follow up he said it was the funniest surgery he’s ever performed but it really distracted him from laughing 🤣 they have seen it all!!! Don’t worry

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 18/08/2023 18:10

I had an op just before covid and they had too bring DH into recovery as j was furiously angry as it was meant to be my turn and they promised I’d have had my op by lunchtime and I was still waiting.

I had to be out of surgery by lunchtime to be allowed home the same day and I was in floods of tears because they promised I was next and I was still waiting. DH had to show me the dressing to convince me I had indeed already had my turn.

Twilight7777 · 18/08/2023 18:10

Don’t worry about it OP they see all sorts of reactions to GA and LA, I just drive them mad asking for a cup of tea cos I’m so dry in the throat! I was once brought round from a medical coma and was so high on the drugs I was trying to fight anyone that came near my bed, which was worrying, but I suspect I was not that scary in my 5ft petite frame 😂

Frazzled83 · 18/08/2023 18:12

I thought the nurse was a school friend - told her to get the f* out of the room. Repeatedly.
