Oh god, Mumsnet - I am exposed to more than likely norovirus

There's a virus going through the child who has dirrohoea and vomiting. I don't have a diagnosis for her but maybe it's likely norovirus.

I am trying to keep her comfortable. Ca t wait til it passes. It's very hard.

I definitely am exposed to this now. I am carrying out hygiene appoprieately however the skin on my hands is beginning to break from all the hand washing after cleaning up sick and poo all day long.

Do you think will I get this now? Whatever it is. Probably not right now today but maybe tomorrow or Saturday.

I have a hiardressers appointment booked for Saturday. Should I be cancelling due to being exposed to this?

Disinfect disinfect disinfect.

Touch wood , after 5 kids and 25 years of parenting with multiple run ins with norovirus, I’ve never succumbed myself.

Just clean like a fiend. Never touch your face and wear a mask to avoid vomity droplets!

I don't have any bleach to alcohol for disinfecting unfortunately. So far it's just clothing getting the brunt of sick and poo. I have disposable gloves but I still need to carry out hand hygiene.

Yes, I would cancel the hair appointment, not least because if you are carrying it you might infect quite a number of people via the hairdresser. I hope you aren't, for your sake, but it would be the right thing to do to cancel.

I rescheduled my appointment that was coming up this weekend for September.

Eat probiotics too

cheezncrackers · 17/08/2023 17:47

Good luck OP. You won't necessarily catch it. I've (touch wood!) never caught a D&V bug from either of my kids, because I'm fastidious about hygiene when they're ill 🍀

ForestofBears · 17/08/2023 18:52

You might be ok. I come into contact with norovirus at work several times a year and sometimes via my own children, and I don’t usually get it myself. Good luck and I hope your DC is feeling better soon.

WeWereInParis · 17/08/2023 18:57

I've not (yet!) caught a vomiting bug from my children. But I have pretty severe emetophobia so my infection control measures are bordering on obsessive.

As an aside, does it seem like there's more d&v around at the moment than is normal for summer??

Blarn · 17/08/2023 19:00

I've got a sickness bug at the moment, I feel horrendous. It's just me though, dh and dc are fine. Regular handwashing and wiping down loo flushes etc helps.

Blarn · 17/08/2023 19:01

Also, rearranging the hair appt is annoying but polite.

stayclosetoyourself · 17/08/2023 19:03

Don't panic! I am constantly exposed to various infections at work and don't usually catch them.
Don't cancel your appointment unless you are actually ill.

HermioneWeasley · 17/08/2023 19:15

Are you cleaning surfaces as well as your hands?

The thing is, I am exposed now - today. Not only that but my mother has a sore throat and in my mind I think it might be the onset of COVID possibility. So I am exposed to whatever the hell all this is.

In realtion to this virus, if I am exposed now it might be another 24 hours or more before I feel ill if I do and then that will bring me right into last minute cancellation and that's not fair on him or me and I will likely have to pay for the appointment as well if I am ill. I felt more comfortable cancelling today and rescheduling but it's so disappointing.

I will likely come down with something because I am run down due to stress.

I'm not really cleaning surfaces. It's clothes and towels that's getting hit with sick and poo. I'm washing at high temps and that's it. My hands are bleeding with all the hand washing.

Just cancel the appointment. Ds2 has been throwing up all day after being in contact with someone with covid and we're prepared to all be smitten at some point.

Careerdilemma · 17/08/2023 19:35

Drink tonnes of water. Because if you're going to get it you want to be really well hydrated before it hits.

Singleandproud · 17/08/2023 19:36

Why are you worrying about something so routine? Norovirus makes you feel awful for a couple of days and then you'll be fine.
Very rarely does it require additional treatment. I'd probably put in an order for lemonade, ginger biscuits, ice lolliesas I know when I'm ill that tends to be what I keep down, and some cleaning products diarlyte and paracetomal and then hope for the best whilst avoiding crowded places.

Elderflower14 · 17/08/2023 20:08

You seem very neurotic about illness. What with this thread and the Covid thread too!!?? 🙄 🙄
