What dessert shall I make for our Belgium friends staying this week?

Hi all,
We've got a lovely Beglian family staying with us this week. They're very easy going and thankfully lap up everything we put in front of them.

So far this week I've made a chocolate torte and sticky toffee puddings with home made ice cream, and last night we at out. My puddings tend to be stuck in the 70s - I love chocolate mousse, tiramisu, that kind of thing - basically soft and creamy. I need to diversify!!

Thinking maybe something with fruit in as it hasn't featured so far... I can't think of anything except Trifle though!! What home-made desserts do you like to do for family gatherings etc?

I make most things from scratch - proper custards, pastry etc - so happy to try anything really!

Thanks everyone!!

Pavlova or a meringue roulade.

Eton Mess - yum

Apple crumble every time! My Argentinian student friend who I met studying here in England, was blown away by her landlady's apple crumble.

I have also given a crumble to one or two of my neighbours, who came from the Indian subcontinent, with some success Smile

Also, a traditional Trifle is heaven.

Eton mess with a scoop of vanilla ice cream at the bottom of each bowl

Blackberry and apple crumble or plum crumble with a choice of cream or custard. I personally like plum best of all but B&a is a classic.

BelovedLucy · 17/08/2023 16:22

Crumble- easy, delicious and not really a thing in Belgium.

declutteringmymind · 17/08/2023 16:24

Yes to crumble, lots of lovely fruit in season so use it!

Crumble apple/blackberry or rhubarb or gooseberry

Pudding doesn’t need to be modern, only delicious. Continue to make your creamy old fashioned puddings and maybe diversify with a crumble as others have suggested. Your friends will be waddling back to Belgium at this rate!

Gastropod · 17/08/2023 16:39

Crumble. Definitely one of those desserts that are invariably made wrongly outside of the UK! Proper crumble is the best pudding ever. (Not some fruit compote with crumbled up biscuits on top)

Sourisblanche · 17/08/2023 16:40

My in-laws are Dutch/Belgian and they love our warm puddings because it’s not a thing there. So I would go for a fruity crumble with a choice of icecream or custard (custard is a step too far for them Grin)

LienD · 17/08/2023 16:41

I’m Belgian and I would loooooove a proper crumble!

dogmandu · 17/08/2023 16:58

in Germany we don't have puddings as such but we do have coffee and cake at around 3 ish, usually at weekends.

Beebumble2 · 17/08/2023 16:59

Summer pudding with cream

Echio · 17/08/2023 17:03

TOP SUGGESTIONS everyone!! Huge thanks!

I'm going for crumble tonight and Eton mess tomorrow I think!
You guys are THE BEST!

I was worrying these sorts of things are a bit 'basic' but also actually sometimes that's because they work isn't it? I haven't done a crumble in ages but I know my dear nan's ratios like the back of my hand.

Thank you thank you thank you! xx

I second summer pudding. Made one recently and was stunned at how easy it was.

Just line a pudding bowl with stale white bread. Cook up some summer fruits in sugar, put in bowl, top with bread. Put a weighted saucer on top and leave in fridge overnight. It was absolutely delicious. I used strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrants.

I used this recipe I think - www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/summerpudding_90295/amp

I didn't have any cassis but have bought some to use next time I make it!

CheshireCat1 · 17/08/2023 17:05

Knickerbocker Glory or a banana split while the weather is good. Strawberry tarts with cream, crème brûlée with a shortbread biscuit goes down well in our house.

Menopausehaver · 17/08/2023 17:05

Apple crumble

Lemon tart

Basque cheesecake
