What dessert shall I make for our Belgium friends staying this week?

Hi all,
We've got a lovely Beglian family staying with us this week. They're very easy going and thankfully lap up everything we put in front of them.

So far this week I've made a chocolate torte and sticky toffee puddings with home made ice cream, and last night we at out. My puddings tend to be stuck in the 70s - I love chocolate mousse, tiramisu, that kind of thing - basically soft and creamy. I need to diversify!!

Thinking maybe something with fruit in as it hasn't featured so far... I can't think of anything except Trifle though!! What home-made desserts do you like to do for family gatherings etc?

I make most things from scratch - proper custards, pastry etc - so happy to try anything really!

Thanks everyone!!

Another vote for Eton Mess

Or if you are good with pastry, a typically English fruit pie, gooseberry or rhubarb.

Other fruity ideas...Fruit fool, summer pudding, summer berry compote served with clotted cream.
Or something really quick, hull and halve strawberries, in a frying pan heat some butter and brown sugar (or honey) till it just bubbles, add the strawberries and a shot of fruit liqueur (if only serving adults) let it bubble briefly, then spoon over portions of good vanilla or lemon ice cream and serve immediately.

Oh my I need to keep the family here for another week at this rate! I am a total pudding person and love the sound of everything!! Thank you again to new posters :)

I've only made Summer pudding a couple of times but I think it could suit them really well as it's not quite so sweet after all my stickie toffees and chocolate etc. I will, as someone said, have them waddling off back to Belgium by the end of their stay if I'm not careful!

This sounds incredible. Is there a name for it?! I think I did this with apples once with some brandy, butter and sugar so similar sort of idea.

I'm a firm believer everything is improved by alcohol and cream!

Give them a wee taste of Scotland with Cranachan

That looks amazing!

Hippyhippybake · 17/08/2023 17:21

Try Nigella’s “Blueberry Boy Bait” which is a take on Queen of Puddings. Absolutely delicious and can mostly be prepared ahead.

BiggerBoat1 · 17/08/2023 17:22

I was going to say Cranachan (food of the gods) but someone beat me to it. Don't be stingy with the whisky!

Belgian Buns!

TranquilWater · 17/08/2023 17:26

Lemon posset is super easy to make, and you could serve it with a few fresh raspberries and some shortbread.

I was just about to suggest this too. So yummy and you can add a sprig of mint and a strawberry and serve with mini shortbreads. Although I couldn't find any and didn't have time to make so I used Biscoff biscuits

TheChosenTwo · 17/08/2023 17:29

Tiramisu and lemon posset are some of my favourites! Tiramisu is hard to master to get the perfect consistency but once you’ve mastered it it’s like mouthfuls of heaven.
Lemon posset is a piece of piss and so refreshing and decadent at once.
We also make a deconstructed Eton mess quite often - only deconstructed as I don’t really like bits of fruit in my pudding so we make the meringues and whisk the cream and prep the fruit and it all goes out as is so people can make their own. Really yum.

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 17/08/2023 17:32

Nigellas chocolate pavlova worth raspberries and some ripple chocolate bar sprinkled over the top. 😋

GrumpyPanda · 17/08/2023 17:33

As somebody not a Brit but with relatives who spent many years in the UK, trifle was always a big hit when they made it for family gatherings. Specifically a boozy trifle considering your folks are Belgian 😀

AdaColeman · 17/08/2023 17:41

@Echio

Well, it's based on Bananas Foster, but I do with all sorts of fruit, peaches, pineapple etc. You are not wrong about alcohol and cream being essentials of life, I'd add chocolate too!

Belgian Buns 🇧🇪 🇧🇪
I always laugh when I see these in Sainsburys, as absolutely no Belgian baker would recognise these as Belgian patisserie.

Prescottdanni123 · 17/08/2023 17:45

Victoria sponge? Applie pie and custard or apple crumble and custard? Raspberry pavlova? Lemon cheese cake?

Footle · 17/08/2023 17:49

@Echio Please share your dear Nan's ratios. I'm always getting it wrong

WhatdidIdoyesterday · 17/08/2023 17:51

Victoria sponge cake
Strawberries and cream
Trifle
Summer pudding
Eve's pudding
Plum duff
Pavlova or eton mess
Home made shortbread

All hot puddings with vanilla ice cream or custard. Belgians have a thing called "sauce anglaise" but its not custard more like a watery vanilla version and I think they will love real egg custard.

Hungry now!

Please. I had the best crumble recipe from my school home economics worksheet (dead simple) but every recipe I try now either has loads of additions/substitutions or is far too sweet

Radiatorvalves · 17/08/2023 18:05

Blackberry and apple crumble would be top choice. Made a treacle tart yesterday and everyone loved it! Add lemon juice so it’s not sickly.

Agree! Nans recipes are the best for this kind of thing.

DinnaeFashYersel · 17/08/2023 18:08

@snowstorm2012

That looks amazing

It is - raspberries, cream, honey, oats and plenty of whiskey

As @BiggerBoat1 says - Food of the Gods.

CrepuscularCritter · 17/08/2023 18:08

Tiramisu or lemon posset both sound great. As does chocolate mousse, which is a really big thing in Belgium and features on lots of menus in Flanders. Taste of home for your guests?

ManyATrueWord · 17/08/2023 18:17

Treacle tart is my suggestion. Golden syrup tart really. I do a proper treacle on occasionally, it's not all that. Serve with creme fraiche.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 17/08/2023 18:22

Delia Smith's Lemon Meringue Pie. I cheat by using a bought case, you may choose not to. The lemon filling is prepared in advance, the meringue is prepared just before popping in the oven. Always a winner for me.
PS can we have your address so we can sample all your luscious puddings, pretty please?
