What dessert shall I make for our Belgium friends staying this week?

Hi all,
We've got a lovely Beglian family staying with us this week. They're very easy going and thankfully lap up everything we put in front of them.

So far this week I've made a chocolate torte and sticky toffee puddings with home made ice cream, and last night we at out. My puddings tend to be stuck in the 70s - I love chocolate mousse, tiramisu, that kind of thing - basically soft and creamy. I need to diversify!!

Thinking maybe something with fruit in as it hasn't featured so far... I can't think of anything except Trifle though!! What home-made desserts do you like to do for family gatherings etc?

I make most things from scratch - proper custards, pastry etc - so happy to try anything really!

Thanks everyone!!

@DinnaeFashYersel I'm definitely going to make it, as much as I wish I loved whiskey (I've tried and I'll keep trying 😂), my husband does and he would absolutely love that so thank you 👍🏼

I was going to suggest pavlova, but my absolute fave is queen of puddings. Yum

Baked Alaska. I remember being blown away by this when a relative served it to my childhood self.

Eton Mess! Delicious, typically British and incredibly easy.

Yet another vote for crumble. I always make it for extended family gatherings, not because it's the only thing I can make but because it is what everyone wants. On the one occasion I made something different (and delicious) the reaction wasn't good. Sort of, it's nice mum but can we have crumble next time?

For two evenings my lot would probably have crumble twice although I would try to vary the fruit.

Our Spanish neighbours were very impressed with Eton Mess last year, particularly at the thought of the Eton Mess that was the Cabinet at the time...
Also, if you're still going strong Banoffee Pie is great for a 'modern but traditional' feel.

Lovely suggestions! As a fellow European, I would be pleased with all of them.
My favourite recipe for lemon posset - I am always amazed how something so simple to make can taste so divine: amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2009/may/02/hugh-fearnley-whittingstall

I love a peach galette with an almond frangipane in it.

Yummy!

All the suggestions sound excellent though!

Crumble 100%

Boodle's Fool

An orangey possety type pudding.

But my mom zhizzed it up a bit with Grand Marnier soaked cantucini I'm the bottom.

Oh gosh delicious

Plum crumble, it is so much better than apple crumble because of the lovely colour contrast between the fruit and the crumble. Also you can leave the stones in and teach them Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor….

And custard.

If you need another non fruit traditional dessert then bread and butter pudding is the dogs bollocks.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 17/08/2023 19:32

Crumble all the way! Traditional grub - delish.

I did an apple, pear & blackberry one last week.
