I need to do less social media - want to join me?

I have developed a scrolling habit and it is taking up too much of my time.

here are things I am not doing because I am dithering around on Twitter:
sleeping
exercising
housework
reading
developing my side hustle
maintaining actual, real life friendships

i thibk you can see in the apps how many hours you spend on them and I haven’t looked because I am ashamed!

I look at politics and comedy and geekery and I love thinking I’m getting news and insights.

but I am tired and lazy and fat and the house is in chaos.

it needs to stop. I’m intending to take the apps off my phone but leave them on the laptop and put a timer on them.

I’ll keep MN on my phone for the news and geekery.

I have stopped using insta, LinkedIn, and FB, but my Twitter habit is dire. I’ve never had tik tok or Snapchat etc.

I think an hour a day is my aim. (deep breath). And I’d like to have a scarf knitted, two novels read, be half a stone lighter and my side hustle planned by Christmas instead.

what about you?

Do you include mumsnet as social media?

I sink far more time into this than any other platform 🙈

When I’ve done a social media detox before I just had to go full cold turkey to break the habit. I did it for lent this year and tbf it did stick with most things as I just got out of the habit.

i dont count MN because I am not mindlessly scrolling and the stuff I read actually interests me.

it’s probably splitting a hair but I’ll hop on here at coffee break and then carry on, but Twitter…

it’s a FOMO thing I think. And maybe a dopamine hit, but it is a total waste of time. I guess I don’t think MN is a waste of time!

(By the way, I am not Justine or paid by Justine to big up the brand)

yep.

I MN like a boss.

It depresses me.

yesterday I put myself on MN for 45 minutes three times a day. I achieved so much more.. there is a whole section of my garden that was overhauled and my house was cleaning-lady ready.

(In my defense I am on AL right now).

what;s your strategy OP? I was thinking of doing for msyelf what i do for my Dcs. A timer on screen time.

LateSummerLobelia · 17/08/2023 13:04

Right- my aim - 30 mins first thing a day to do e-mail' MN and facebook.

30 mins after dinner for the same.

Real Life all other times.

Smile

(I'd better sign off then. See you all around 7 pm)

Yes, that would work. But I mindlessly pick up the phone. All the time, just to check, and boom, half an hour has whooshed by.

I think I need to go cold turkey. Nothing else will work properly, I’ll justify things to myxelf

i use Twitter for my side hustle so I think it is worth scheduling a months tweets and pinning a tweet to say “time out”. I can read it but not have it on my phone and disable messaging on Twitter - they can email. I’ll lose some sales but I’ll gain time to develop it.

im putting my phone down now and going to do my next thing…
