How much do you still look like younger you?

Just an idle musing really.

How similar to younger you do you look?

I met up with my friend yesterday who is 61. She doesn't really look any different to she did when she was 41. When she didn't look much different to when she was 21!

Obviously older and her face etc has matured but still instantly recognisable as her.

Apparently, I don't look any different to I did as a teenager/very early 20s. Obviously, my face has matured but I'm still obviously the same person.

I've bumped into people I went to school with a few times and, although they've recognised me, I haven't had a clue who they were! Recognised the name when they introduced themselves but never would have realised otherwise. Or I've seen photos of friends and colleagues in their younger days and they just looked completely different. Not better or worse necessarily just really different.

I met awomen who knew me as a child she recognised me immediately, im 52 and I don't think I've changed that much,.I've known Dh since we were 19 he has really changed over the years.

Mummy08m · 17/08/2023 11:08

Certain things like weight gain or loss, and also dyeing hair, can really change the way someone looks. But if your weight has been stable and hair similar then I think most people stay recognisably the same.

I'm very recognisable even from teenage photos (obvs aged loads but it's still clearly me!) Always been approx same weight/build, long black hair.

Mrsjayy · 17/08/2023 11:08

I bump into a man regularly he obviously knows me he's very friendly and chatty I've know clue who he is , I'm assuming from school I grew up where I .now live , but I don't have the heart to ask this guy who he is.😳

My son is mid twenties and still looks like an older version of 3 year old him. My daughter is late teens and unrecognisable from her earlier incarnations!

She went back to her old primary school couple of years ago and no one recognised her! They were shocked at how much she'd changed.

I briefly dated a really nice boy when we were both aged 15 - only three years later bumped into a man in the street who greeted me enthusiastically - not only did he have to tell me who he was, I didn't believe him. He'd lost (too) much weight, grown a beard, changed his clothing style etc.

I think weight loss/gain, and changing hair/beards are the biggest factors

That's probably got a lot to do with it.

I’m not much heavier than I was when I was young, but time has taken its toll, I’m afraid.

That made laugh!

My exh and I went to school together. In our mid 30s, we were out one day and a man came and chatted to us - really pleased to see us and asked how things were going etc.

Had a lovely chat with him but we had to work out who he was afterwards by a process of elimination. He was still fit and athletic but not really the skinny teenager he'd been I suppose, still had the same hair style but just looked so different in his face!

It’s so funny isn’t it, how some look similar and others really different. My dc are 7 and 10, the 7 year old looks exactly as she did as a baby/toddler (but obviously older) where as my 10 year old looks like a completely different child. I’ve got a friend who looks like a totally different person to when she was in her earlier 20s. She’s almost 40 now and looks so different. She’s really slim and petite so it’s not weight related, but her face seems to be almost a totally different shape now compared to pictures of her when she was younger.

JamieandRoybromance · 17/08/2023 11:19

I recently watched the Wham documentary. The childhood photos of George Michael looked nothing like him! Yet, I'm told that I haven't changed a bit since school. Just greyer hair.

MrsJackRackham · 17/08/2023 11:20

A guy who's older brother I dated at 15 recognised me a few months ago. I'm 51 now. And a woman who I played with when we were pre teens also recognised me recently. So I'm obviously just an older, wrinklier version of my young self.
I would not have known either of them if they hadn't told me.

IAmTheUniverse · 17/08/2023 11:24

It is really strange!

My partner has put on a good 4+ stone since his 20s. And hasn't aged particularly well (wouldn't tell him that though!)

He still looks like himself. We went out recently and bumped into a man he hadn't seen seen 1986! The other guy recognised him straightaway but it took my partner a while to place him.

Well, I was walking down the street the other day and was stopped by a woman who grabbed my arm and said my name, all excited. I had no idea who she was.

She goes "it's me, Mrs Jones!".

Turns out she was my nursery school teacher. I'm 32 and she recognised me.

So I guess I have a recognisable face 😂

IAmTheUniverse · 17/08/2023 11:27

My brother is also someone who has changed a lot. I see photos of us together 20 years ago and I look similar but he doesn't. His whole face shape has changed and his features look different! People are surprised to see younger photos of him. I just look like an older version of me.

Yeah this is a weird one. Some people say I look totally different to what I did as a child. When I was young people used to say I was the double of my Dad but now I’m older (44) everyone says I look like my mum, so I guess my features must have changed in some way.

SiblingFights · 17/08/2023 11:31

I was in the supermarket a while back and a bloke I worked with in my early 20s came up and started chatting - he recognised me instantly whereas I didn't have a clue who he was until he (re) introduced himself - I am 53 now.

DD looks very different but is recognisable as the little girl that she was (she is 19) and poor DS still has the baby face he always had and just looks like a toddler head on a 25 year old body.

DP (not their Dad) looks completely unrecognisable from his younger self and both DSDs look totally different to how they did 10 years ago but the same as they did 5 years ago (23 and 25)

Hmm. Actually when I was a child, I was the spitting image of my dad but my grown up face is more his features but my mum's bone structure. As I age, I think I'm ageing more like my maternal grandma than anyone.

Maybe it's whose genetics we follow in the aging process 🤷🏻‍♀️

Isn't that strange it must be genetics or something! My dds are adults I think the eldest still looks the same Dd2 is starting to look like 1 of her Grans.

I wish I could work out who this guy is I've tried to ask how his family are hoping for a clue nope !

enchantedsquirrelwood · 17/08/2023 12:01

I look the same as I did at 5. If we ever did one of those things where you take a photo of yourself in for people to guess who you were, I'd be the easiest to guess!

DH and DS look completely different.

Mrsjayy · 17/08/2023 12:02

My mum has my primary 1 photo up so I was 5 and yes it's definitely me.

IAmTheUniverse · 17/08/2023 12:06

Thinking about it, my partner's daughter looks like 5 year old her but I wouldn't have recognised his son. Same hairstyle and size so it's not just that.

Both mid 20s.

Obviously not the exact same size! 🤣 You know what I mean though.
