This non-weather is making me feel...weird and flat?

I feel so odd atm – can’t get into anything at work, finding it difficult to get motivated to do stuff at the weekends, just waiting for each day to be over so I can get to the next one, just constantly feel like I’m waiting for…something? I’m convinced it’s the weather. I enjoy summer, but not the heat, and I much prefer this cooler weather to last year’s heatwaves, but I think it’s the lack of sunshine and having had ‘a summer’ that’s left me feeling really off kilter, everything just feels a bit weird, not totally unlike how it did during Covid. Logically I don’t mind that it hasn’t been hot and sunny, it hasn’t ruined anything for me, but it just feels like something is missing/wrong.

I look forward to autumn every year, particularly if the summer has been hot as I love the changing of the seasons, but right now I literally can’t wait for the dark nights and everything to feel proper autumnal - but just because it would be preferable to this grey-ish, warmi-ish nothingness, and then hopefully this strange untethered feeling will go away.

Is it just me?

I get what you mean. I'm seven months pregnant, and can't cope with the heat AT ALL, but there's something very anaemic about this weather.

It would be nice if it were spring-like with bright days and brisk showers and temperatures in the late teens, but it's just so grey.

blobby10 · 17/08/2023 11:36

I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I had a 9 day holiday in Cornwall at the start of June and although the first 5 days were glorious, sunny and warm, the latter were grey and dreary although still warmish. Since I came home, I haven't really sat in the garden of an evening cos its either been raining or too cold. I only mow the grass every 3 weeks whereas its usually every week at this time of year. Weeds are flourishing through the patio though 😤- I just can't be bothered to do anything whether its get up early for the gym or cycle for an hour after work. Last night I went out for a cycle and it seemed like the only time this summer there wasn't any wind and/or rain! I've been soaking wet during a bike ride more often than not this year. Its so depressing.

hygieneversusplanet · 17/08/2023 12:11

Plus, I've just been emailed my appointment for the winter flu jab!!! I get it because I have a lung condition. I know it's not until October, but it further makes me feel like that's it, summer has been skipped this year!

LadyVictoriaSponge · 17/08/2023 12:24

I’ve been feeling exactly the same I can’t stand this grey nothingness I need proper weather, I either need it to be sunny, (doesn’t have to bet hot), or dark and rainy, or cold and frosty, my house looks lovely when I come down the stairs in either condition, when the sun shines it feels bright and fresh, when it’s dark and rainy the colours pop and it feels love and cosy, but when it’s grey and still my house looks really flat and dull and then my mood is really flat as well, I hate grey weather with a passion.

SingingKlingon · 17/08/2023 12:55

Omg not just me then. Can't shake this lethargy off!!

LlynTegid · 17/08/2023 13:25

@madeinmanc you may have a point there.

MeinKraft · 17/08/2023 13:42

I feel exactly the same. I like cool blue sunny and windy days. Days with a bit of character. I'd rather it bloody rained than was just grey.

Sagittariusrising · 17/08/2023 14:53

@OldChinaJug My garden is the same. New perennials are all thriving and my pots are looking lovely. Not having to water every night has been lovely.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 17/08/2023 14:59

I'm also with you!
I'm waiting for 'summer'.

Afternoons in beer gardens
Picnics
Beach trips
BBQ in the garden
Silly garden games
Taking DS out on his bike

I actually think I could cope more with it if it wasn't randomly raining. Days where the forecast say it's dry, it rains. Days where it say's itll rain, it's dry. I feel like I can't plan anything and even being spontaneous is too risky.

I'm lugging around waterproofs and suncream/hats everywhere. I've had bucket and spades, along with wellies and umbrellas in the boot of the car for ages now.

Just checked the weather forecast and it looks like next week should be nice and sunny. Lets not give up hope yet! 😎

Not round here it isn't

Jamtartforme · 17/08/2023 18:00

I get barometric headaches and pressure which had been really awful!

WallaceinAnderland · 17/08/2023 18:05

August has been wonderfully perfect for us. Not too hot, dry enough to get outside a lot but also plenty of bursts of rain which has been marvellous for the garden. We were sitting out yesterday saying that the lawn hasn't looked so good for months.

Notcontent · 17/08/2023 18:05

Yes, me too! It just feels a bit odd. I do think it’s the lack of sunshine. I did go away in July but not somewhere where it was any sunnier or warmer, so I think my brain is a bit confused.

DyslexicPoster · 17/08/2023 18:10

Buy yourself some very high dose vitamin D liquid tablets.

whatdidshedotogetahillnamedafterher · 17/08/2023 18:12

Yes OP! I hear you and feel you. I feel totally unmotivated. Just some sun please. This summer has been such a non event.

MeinKraft · 17/08/2023 19:27

I went to Home Bargains earlier and they had Christmas stuff out. 2 aisles of it.

Hollyhead · 17/08/2023 19:33

August is always like this, grey, humid and weird, it just feels worse this year as july was uncharacteristically shit. I wish they’d move the 6 week school holiday to the last 2 weeks of June and the whole of July. It would be much better.

Bubbles254 · 17/08/2023 20:21

I feel exactly the same. I think it is the lack of light. The nights drawing in earlier are making me feel off kilter as we did not seem to have any summer. I am thinking of getting a sad lamp to see if that boosts my mood.

madeinmanc · 17/08/2023 20:46

Is there anywhere I could take a short holiday in September just to feel warmth and see sunshine? I don't have any money so I'd have to sell somethings on eBay to do it but at the moments that seems worth it!

Vitriolinsanity · 17/08/2023 21:22

It's weird. I've been wearing shorts and flip flops all through august. Haven't really sat out, and have really tanned legs.

How can you tell if your headaches are barometric?

scrivette · 17/08/2023 21:56

I feel like this too. I know that August is generally quite dull and miserable, although warmer, but usually we have had a hot July. All I want to do is sit and eat chocolate all day.

Jamtartforme · 17/08/2023 22:42

tequilachickenbird · 17/08/2023 21:52

They happen every time there is low cloud and high pressure. They can last for days, as soon as the cloud clears they stop. It’s like a dull aching headache

BogRollBOGOF · 17/08/2023 23:22

I'm on holiday in the UK and ended up on the beach in my changing coat to shelter from the wind, and light was fading from 8pm. I know I always notice at this stage of August that it's dark around 9 and get a pang that the lightest evenings are done, but there's been so many days that I've had the kitchen lights on from 7.30pm to see to cook.

I've also been ill with two different things since the start of the school holidays. Laid in bed ill. Plus DS had a sick bug. I swear that it's being run-down from the lack of sunlight.

June wasn't that great- we kept getting intense, localised, thunderstorms. I haven't been able to have a river swim as there hasn't been a good enough run of warm, dry days for good conditions, and my usual swimming venue is a couple of degrees colder than the last few years.
