If you have a car allowance for work, is it discretionary in your contract?

Had a contract through for a new job and it’s worded as ‘car allowance is at the company’s discretion, the company reserves the right to amend the allowance amount or cancel car allowance at any time’. Is that normal?

I had that in previous contracts. They did make changes ( to save money) and at one point I lost the right to a company car, however they did give me notice of the change, the rules on qualifying have changed a couple of times since then, always with notice

Thanks @Gizlotsmum i haven’t had one for 10+ years and it was worded then as a statement, no discretionary in there etc. I wonder if it’s a covid reaction, and easy way to save money in the case of furlough etc?

Ours was like that before covid ( lots of roles had company cars/ car allowance) just because of the level they were at they then changed the rules to a min annual mileage or job need
