i know people pinch glasses
from pubs all the time , it’s wrong , but people do it. My friend has done this and she said she thinks the owner saw her and is now worried , I’ve told her to take it back , I’m sure it’ll be fine . I don’t know . Has anyone got in trouble before for stealing a glass ? Or for returning it ?

It'll probably be plastered all over the local facebook page by tomorrow.

Tell her to take it back. Why did she take something that didn't belong to her?

TropicalTrama · 16/08/2023 20:55

Is your friend an 18YO student?? If not then WTF? Imagining that I’m talking to my teenage nephew for a moment I would say no don’t go back, avoid that restaurant for a while and for god’s sake grow up.

Squishmallowy · 16/08/2023 20:55

It’s something most people have done when drunk. Don’t worry about it.

WaxhamSeals · 16/08/2023 20:56

DD works in a pub. If she catches someone stealing a glass, she’ll take it off them and refuse to serve them again.
If someone asks if they can take a glass, she gets them a clean one from behind the bar

HarrietSchulenberg · 16/08/2023 21:00

As someone whose friends once stole barstools from pubs and an entire table from a restaurant, I sympathise with your embarrassment.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 16/08/2023 21:01

There’s a Thatchers Glass that I really like the shape and feel of. A perfect shape, well balanced and good size.
I want to steal one, but I’m too scared of ending up on the local ‘Spotted’ Facebook page I know stealing is wrong.

I can't get my head round why anyone would do this as a fully mature adult.
Pint glasses etc with branding are supplied free to the venue but they do have to buy their own glassware for everything else.

I think she should be questioning her motives and what she hoped to gain by taking a glass she could no doubt afford to buy anyway

ChrisPriss · 16/08/2023 21:09

More often that not you can buy such glasses on a well-known auction site. (They may have been stolen in the first place though!)

SmileyClare · 16/08/2023 21:11

Has anyone got into trouble for returning a glass? Just asking for a friend?

Possibly the daftest “dilemma” I’ve read on here.
You both need to calm the fuck down and get to bed

BasiliskStare · 16/08/2023 21:17

I know a local land lord ( independent of a pub in our area and he cannot believe the amount of money he has to pay for people taking glasses home with them - Now whether they take them home or just leave them down the street somewhere - whatever. The costs surely have to be passed on somehow. )

It is not yours - do not take it. Just put it back on the bar or near enough so the pub can take it back. If you give it back the next day they will be grateful so don't worry about that.

Monkeypopcorn · 16/08/2023 21:18

I think if the owner had seen her and was really that bothered they would have said something there and then.

HarrietJet · 16/08/2023 21:19

Why did she do it if she thought the owner was watching? You sound as daft as each other.

shivawn · 16/08/2023 21:19

I worked in pubs for years when I was younger. No one I worked with would have cared about a missing glass, most pubs have boxes of spares from the drinks companies in the store room. There was glasses broken most nights anyway. If it's an upscale restaurant then it might be a bit different but you're probably overthinking this.

liveforsummer · 16/08/2023 21:21

I used to manage pubs, we once had a gambling machine stolen, barrels from the cellar by masked men and even joints of meat from the carvery. These were an issue the glasses were not. They get broken all the time anyway and a huge amount are given from companies anyway. It's a massive non issue

I bought this from the Thatchers shop about a year ago. It's not on their website but I'm sure if you contacted them they could arrange something?

If you ask nicely the next time you are in the pub they will probably let you have one. Branded glasses are usually provided for free by the breweries as promotional items.

😆😆😀 Christ, where do you live? Remind me to move there when I need somewhere to die.

OP - pub glasses are ten a penny. What do you think they do, count them pre and post shift? Come and live in the real world.

LoveThisUsername · 16/08/2023 22:09

It's hardly crime of the century.

doroda · 16/08/2023 22:11

Hasn't everybody got a couple of years old pub pint glasses in their cupboard?

Nope. Bought my pint glasses from Asda.

Weddingblues23 · 16/08/2023 22:20

Stole this from a campsite bar in Portugal about 12 years ago. Bloody love it, drink out of it every day, zero regrets ✌🏻 (plus, said bar had fed us rotten saltfish and potatoes with the mud still on them so didn't feel bad. Bastard ex kept the other one of the pair 😭)

More fool you then 😂

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 16/08/2023 22:22

Dd was telling me about going to a bar (lives in amsterdam) with mates just after lockdown. One of the girls nicked one of their very nice and branded glasses. The manager came and told them to return it or he’d put an extra 15 euro charge on their bill.

HarrietJet · 16/08/2023 22:25

doroda · 16/08/2023 22:21

Hardly. It's a wee bit scuzzy to half inch glasses from pubs.

greatly80 · 16/08/2023 22:26

Surely if you ask nicely to buy one most places will let you have it or at least not charge much, seeing as the cost to them is small, much easier than trying to nick one and worrying about it.
