Tracing grandparents / great grandparents

How do I trace my great grandmother's details? I think she was Italian but possibly born in France... no idea where to begin!

Do you know your grandmother’s details? Where she was born or where she lived? If it’s pre 1911 (I think) they should be on a census if they were in the UK then. Have a look on ancestry UK and see if they’re doing any free trials. I’ve just cancelled my subscription or I’d check for you.

Or, if you’ve got her name, it might be worth doing a search on Ancestry regardless of whether you have a subscription or not. It won’t let you see any documents but will tell you if there’s a trace of her.
