Food turning bad, is it my fridge?

Milk has soured and a chilled pizza has mould on the crust, both 3 and 4 days before the use by date. Could be a coincidence but it’s two different shops. The fridge feels cold enough inside. The dial shows the temperature is one degree c. How do I work out if it’s the fridge and what steps can I take to fix it? It’s a relatively new fridge, only about a year old. Everything else inside it feels cool enough.

1C is quite cold for a fridge. Usually 3-5C. I am wondering if there is condensation and this is what’s causing mould? Does it seem wet?

the only way to know for sure would be to get a cheap digital thermometer and leave it in there for an hour or so to check the temp.

Number 1 on the fridge setting us usually the warmest setting. It doesn't usually mean that it is 1 degree. Number 5 is the coldest setting normally

1 doesn't mean 1 ⁰C - it is the warmest setting on the fridge dial

5 is the coolest setting so I'd turn the dial towards that

And get a fridge thermometer

Elizadoloads · 15/08/2023 21:52

As others have said 1 is the warmest setting. My fridge goes up to 6 and that is the coldest.

ChrisPPancake · 15/08/2023 21:53

Get a separate fridge thermometer.

Is the door shutting properly? It needs to fully seal. Also 1 on the dial is low, mines usually around ,3-4.

Omg thank you everyone I didn’t know. After 1, it says minimum - is this still hottest?

I feel so silly!! I wonder what temperature ‘1’ would’ve been. Should I discard everything else in the fridge?

Yes, that's minimum chill.

Yes, that's minimum chill.

Oh no way! Seems so counter intuitive. It’s a wonder we’ve not been poorly!

Get a fridge thermometer, extremely useful, you can hang it on a rack.

AutumnCrow · 15/08/2023 22:49

My fridge ticks over on minimum, OP, you'll be fine!

I only turn it up for a while if I've unloaded 'a big shop' and/or people are opening and closing it a lot in the summer. You might need to crank yours up at least for a day or so.

(I do have a fridge thermometer because I've got medications in it, so I'm pretty sure that minimum is safe.)
