Did you lose much weight the first few weeks of keto?

I'm restarting keto ( again) I'm 50 in November and I really want to lose weight. I have around 4 stone to get to goal but I'd say about 2 stone to get me to a place were I don't look horrible in the mirror. So,... everyone is different I get all that but how did keto work for you in the first week? Did you lose inches, pounds, nothing? What did you experience?

Thanks in advance

That should read 'the first weeks' not week

10” off my waist,
2 stone off in 2 months: 3.5 off in 4.5 months

aged 49

you can do this
just make sure you ALSO calorie count for maximum impact

creamcheeseandcream · 15/08/2023 18:26

Wow that's a great effort!!! May I ask were you really strict, did you do dirty keto etc?

Why are you doing keto again if it hasn't worked so far?

BodGaoithe · 15/08/2023 18:28

You usually lose a lot near the start. Quite a bit will be water weight but a fair bit is fat. I think it is why Keto works so well; it spurs you on when you see such a big difference near the start.

I did Keto and then Keto with intermittent fasting and went from an 18 to a 10. I do low carb most of the time now, but if I’ve put a few pounds back on I do the stricter Keto again for a while.

That's a great question... I think I'm too impatient with no will power but I will need to stick with something as I'm getting fatter. Everyone that does keto has great success with it.

I’m doing my own version of Keto (less fat than Keto recommends and also fruit in the morning), I started 5 weeks ago. The first week I lost 3 kilos which I believe was a lot of fluid and I’ve now lost 7 kilo in total which is just over a stone.

Fantastic. I'm also doing IF along side it, I enjoy not being so bloated when I fast.

Well done! That's what I would love. I feel if I commit this time I will see great results. I just need to give it time.

Thanks I’m very happy, the weight has come off very evenly and I’m enjoying noticing things like my wrists looking a bit smaller. My appetite has shrunk and like the PP said I’m being mindful of the calories I’m consuming.

HorsePlatitudes · 15/08/2023 18:45

@creamcheeseandcream

I eat basic and simple food

omelette every day for breakfast

dinner usually fish/meat and veg:salad.

I only count the carbs and calories.

I done eat any processed at all and never really have so it’s been quite easy.

im now at goal weight, it’s only taken me from April.

rabbithearted · 15/08/2023 18:49

Keep in mind it's still calories in calories out at the end of the day which will lose you the weight, if you overeat on keto foods it won't really help

That's great advice. Thank you so much. How did you overcome any sweet cravings ( if you had any)

I have a couple of sugar free sweets a day and no diet sodas as these start my cravings.

VikingLady · 15/08/2023 18:55

When I actually stuck to it and lost a substantial amount of weight I lost quite a bit the first month, nothing much for the next month, then a whoosh of weight loss after that. Brilliant.

I'm such a Diet Coke addict, I usually drink 4+ cans a day - disgrace I know! I have allowed myself 1 at dinner time and switching to sparkling water otherwise. I feel genuinely excited about what I could achieve and you've really given me a glimmer of hope!!!

I haven’t found it hard, the first week I cut down the carbs gradually.

paddleboarder12 · 15/08/2023 19:02

Since I have up my daily fanta zero or diet lemonade my sweet cravings have stopped.

HorsePlatitudes · 15/08/2023 20:17

@creamcheeseandcream

i am very prone to binge eating but honestly the ginger I feel after carbs was real and I got fat over about three years.

the first day I ate a huge fry up, I told myself I could have whatever I wanted and didn’t calorie count.

the next day I wasn’t hungry really and also had zero sugar cravings. From there it’s been easy. I think the hardest part by a long long way is starting. Once you’ve gone a day then the sugar cravings don’t really materialise IME as your blood sugar is stable.

I wake up every day and think OMG, I’m not fat any more! It’s a wonderful feeling especially as at my age I thought it wojjd be impossible.

one thing I’d say is: log everything on my fitness pal. It gives you your weekly calorie intake so you don’t need to get despondent if you have a bad day - you can see you’ve averaged out as still in a calorific deficit.

also: AVOID artificial sweetners - the only time I’ve found it hard was when I went through a phase of drinking Coke Zero / just dicta all that, it definitely makes you hungrier.

HorsePlatitudes · 15/08/2023 20:21

Sorry I meant hunger not ginger 😂

creamcheeseandcream · 15/08/2023 20:26

@HorsePlatitudes - I would cry with delight if I looked in the mirror and felt like my old self again. Covid killed me with binge eating and sedentary lifestyle.

I agree with the sweetners , I will allow myself one treat Diet Coke with my dinner and that's it, with the aim to wean off it eventually.

I've been really enjoying eggs with lots of butter and I had a ton of crème fraiche that I used to make a sauce for my steak. It's been the most delicious food I've eaten I a long time.

I downloaded carb manager today and have been playing about with it to give me an idea of macros etc.

Do you have any supermarket staples that you keep in the cupboard? Or any must have items?

@creamcheeseandcream
eggs
smoked salmon
steak (sainsburys do 2 for £4 with a delicious garlic butter and it’s 260 cals each)
spinach (wipe it around the hot pan after cooking the steak, that’s all the butter used up and spinach cooked perfectly)
broccoli
salad stuff but watch the tomatoes
sausages if feeing lazy
easy on the cheese goats cheese and mozzarella are better options
antipasti from Tesco’s ate great
avocado
pak choi
mustard
pork chops
