Hi

We are staying in the Premier Inn at Pickering for a few nights over the weekend.

We have planned to go to Whitby on Saturday and Eden Camp on Monday.

Does anyone have any recommendations of anything we should see or do and have any places we should try to eat?

Whitby scampi !

I went to Pickering last year and loved it. It's a beautiful little town. I recommend the second hand bookshop near the railway and also the bakery halfway up the high street for their lovely quiche, pies and cakes!

The Abbey obviously, Magpie for fish and chips, the old part of Whitby, there is also a Dracula experience, which may or may not be suitable depending on children’s ages, Boat tour of The harbour and surrounding area, crabbing and the beach :) Whitby is great

cradlepie · 15/08/2023 14:17

The Magpie is a must for fresh fish- even good for vegetarians

DiscontentedWoman · 15/08/2023 14:23

If you can get the timings right, it's a lovely journey to do Pickering to Whitby (and back) on the north Yorkshire Moors railway. The train station is very convenient in Whitby for a saunter round. If you climb the steps to the abbey and go to the left (looping back towards the sea) it will bring you out at the micro brewery. Lovely beers and good value pizzas. Fortunes Kippers on Henrietta street is worth a visit. To be honest, Whitby is altogether lovely just for a wander round.
Helmsley is a nice spot as well.

SallyWD · 15/08/2023 14:23

It's a very short drive to Robin Hood Bay from Whitby. Love it there!

covetingthepreciousthings · 15/08/2023 14:28

Bothams of Whitby to try these (there's one in Pickering) -

The abbey in Whitby is lovely to walk round though a bit on the pricey side unless you have English Heritage membership.

FetchezLaVache · 15/08/2023 14:28

The White Swan in Pickering is very good. The train to Whitby is lovely, but I never feel you get enough time in Whitby! Perhaps there might be a bus back to give you a bit longer?

Helmsley is gorgeous, but may I put a word in for Malton? An absolutely beautiful little town with some nice cafés and interesting shops.

Cloudsandrainnotsunandsand · 15/08/2023 14:29

Take some kippers home from the smokehouse in whitby op!

LadyHag · 15/08/2023 14:30

Save money, don't pay yo go onto the Abbey ruins, just walk the church steps, look at the ruins from a distance and look round the church and graveyard at the top of the church steps.

Lovely little shop in Old Town.

Goathland is where they filmed heartbeat

Best fish and chips I have even eaten at the Magpie. (But be prepared to queue. )
i had a spanking fresh piece of skate while DH's haddock hung over the plate at both ends. The batter was as light and crisp as tempura.
Loved the Whitby jet shops and the Endeavour, a replica but still fascinating.

LadyHag · 15/08/2023 14:31

Does the coastliner bus stop at pickering? If so catch that, enjoy travelling over the moors with no stress about parking when you get to whitby!

Yes to the White Swan and Malton too.

Masham has a couple of breweries - Theakstons and Black Sheep. Or possibly out to Hawes for Wensleydale cheese but that's a long way in the car 😕

Vinorosso74 · 15/08/2023 15:48

We had a slightly extended stay at that Premier Inn after the fuel pump went on our car and we left a trail of petrol across the car park. The staff at the hotel were very kind and helpful, more than can be said for the company who caused further damage to our car which took ages to sort out.
Anyway, we ate at the Black Swan and an Indian restaurant both of which were good. Bothams was nice too. DD and I had a wander around Pickering Castle, we have English Heritage membership, not sure on cost otherwise.
Due to broken car, we took the Coastliner bus to Whitby and it was a lovely journey over the moors. The last bus isn't very late. There is a park and ride which were were going to use.

My recommendation would be not to go to Whitby on Saturday! I did once and it was heaving!

Best fish and chips I have even eaten at the Magpie. (But be prepared to queue. )

My friend and I jumped the queue because there were only two of us and everyone else wanted bigger tables.

Yes the fish and chips were wonderful, as was the Eton Mess to follow, but the portions of both were so enormous, with great regret I couldn't finish them. I tried, I really did!

LightDrizzle · 15/08/2023 16:14

Fortune’s Kippers from Whitby.
Fish, chips and mushy peas from the Magpie café
Drop into Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay for a wander and do the walk from Runswick Bay to Whitby and catch the bus back.
Thornton-le-Dale is a very picturesque village with good ice cream and definitely take a train on the NYMR from Pickering.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone I'm keeping a list. Keep them coming.

We live in Lancashire but I'm a Yorkshire girl so looking forward to being back 'home' for a few days.

It's just a quick break to keep our DD busy whilst she waits for her GCSE results next week.

Bookshops, bakeries and micro breweries are very much up our street and we have English Heritage and National Trust memberships.

Going against The Magpie grain here but we have transferred our affections to The Fisherman's Wife, along the road towards the sea from The Magpie, just as you turn up the slope for the whale jaw. It does get busy but not to the same extent as The Magpie, the fish and chips are excellent, I love the trifle (not terribly relevant, I know) and, best of all, some of the tables look straight out to sea. You can book through Open Table and then call to ask for a window table.

NerrSnerr · 15/08/2023 21:36

If you're kids are age 10/11/12 ish I'd recommend they read this book first. I loved it around that age and made Whitby feel spooky https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room133(Swindellsnovel). It's not too scary.

Balloonsandroses · 15/08/2023 21:43

Dalby forest is a lot of fun and has a go ape as well. Helmsley castle is lovely too. And agree that the magpie in whitby is fab.

nearly55 · 15/08/2023 21:56

Figaro's Italian restaurant in Pickering is lovely - you do need to book though.
The microbrewery opposite Whitby Abbey is good - and does great pizzas too.
There's a lovely independent bookshop in Whitby - called Whitby bookshop I think.

SparkleMonster · 15/08/2023 22:15

Oooo this is great, we're staying near Whitby in a few days too 😁

Sceptre86 · 15/08/2023 22:20

We stayed at this premier inn recently.Staff were lovely. We went to the Eden project and then visited Flamingo land. We went into Scarborough several times as kids were obsessed with the beach.

GlosGal · 15/08/2023 22:24

Cedar Barn. Walkable from the Premier Inn. Lovely farm shop with activities for kids if needed.
excellent Cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. Really good breakfast & also great Sunday lunch.

Selford · 15/08/2023 22:32

If you do go to Malton (which I recommend, it's a nice little town for wandering around), Groovy Moo ice-cream is amazing (not cheap but worth it).

CaramelMac · 15/08/2023 22:33

I’ve always preferred Trenchers for fish and chips, it’s a nicer restaurant inside, the tables in the Magpie are tiny and you feel really squeezed in. Make sure you go and rub the Whale bones for good luck!
