MaryQueenofSocks · 15/08/2023 06:57

As promised, a new women in Tech thread!

This is a space to talk about our industry, celebrate our successes without apology and moan about anything we want to!

We can swap stories, ideas or just shoot the breeze.

Guidelines for this thread:

We are supportive
We encourage each other
We celebrate each other
No judgement on what we earn or what we want to earn/achieve.
If we are working mothers, then no judgement.
If we are child free, no judgement.
Ignore any derailing or goady posts

If anyone wants to add to the above list then feel free.

Come on in, grab a virtual coffee and park yourself on a comfy sofa 😊

50s, been in industry for 25 years, DBA/tech presales.

I find the Women's Network at my place a bit of a faff - it's very geared to moving people into leadership, when I'd just like to be paid properly for my job and just crack on with it.

SummerLightning · 15/08/2023 07:38

Hiya 👋 I lead consulting projects on data engineering/ analytics engineering teams. I've been in tech in various areas since I graduated so 25 years 🤯. And I'm mid 40s.

SummerLightning · 15/08/2023 07:39

Oh and I worked in the US in silicon valley til recently. Wow the salaries in the UK are low in comparison, we are robbed I tell you. They're not any better at their jobs over there!

AutumnNymph · 15/08/2023 07:40

Hiya
Can I join?
I am in my 40s, I lead delivery of tech projects. I am self.employed and currently on a project with the government.
Been in the industry in one capacity or another for about two decades.

GracePalmer33 · 15/08/2023 07:42

Hey!
Senior project manager here in software development, in my 30s, based in Manchester. Currently on maternity ☺️

MaryQueenofSocks · 15/08/2023 07:42

@SummerLightning completely agree re: US packages.

I work with teams all over the world and I've noticed the Americans get and expect a higher package. However, I've also noticed they get fired a lot quicker over there too! being an 'At Will' employee looks a bit precarious. What's your experience on that?

OP posts:
Titerama · 15/08/2023 07:43

Freelancer in the no code martech space. Love it!

SummerLightning · 15/08/2023 07:45

Same but I didn't get fired so it was fine. I mean it was not a problem before all the layoffs as there were loads of jobs floating around so you just got another one! But I think some of these Google employees with half a million packages got a big shock when they got laid off and everywhere else was laying off too.

Spirael · 15/08/2023 07:47

Hello! I'm a senior consultant (data engineering) in my early 40s, based in Yorkshire. Been doing Microsoft database stack work and all things SQL now for about 20 years.

donkra · 15/08/2023 07:48

I'm a data scientist who reskilled into tech via apprenticeships. I love it.

It's mindboggling to me how bad you can get away with being at so many things if you can write code. That makes being in tech fun as hell so far, but I also find it somewhat worrying...

SummerLightning · 15/08/2023 07:48

@MaryQueenofSocks and my company never laid anyone off except for when people were totally crap in the time I was there (like didn't turn up to meetings, totally incompetent, etc). I'm still there but working from the UK now.
Before them I did work for <insert large tech company> who did layoffs all the time. But they also laid off my UK team too! Difference being you'd get a payout in the UK

donkra · 15/08/2023 07:48

Oh, and I'm just below 40.

SummerLightning · 15/08/2023 07:51

@donkra data scientists can be clever as heck with all their data models but omg such a mess. No idea what's deployed and where and little scripts everywhere. Lol. And yes I'm not talking small companies here I'm talking massive companies that I don't understand how these things didn't break

terroir · 15/08/2023 07:52

I'm new, hello - just spotted this thread in active. I'm 39, and head of project management in software dev 👋 lovely to meet a new network!

Barelyable · 15/08/2023 07:53

Hey! I'm in Sales as an Account Manager for Govt clients.
Selling SaaS based applications for over 25 years for big US based corporations.

donkra · 15/08/2023 07:53

Don't look at me, @SummerLightning, I am pristine as the day is long. Obviously. 😇

Barelyable · 15/08/2023 07:54

To clarify...been selling apps...more recently SaaS of course!

CyberCritical · 15/08/2023 08:01

Hello, I'm 39 in Cybersecurity & GRC, so basically the fun police according to our Dev, DevOps and Infra teams, always asking those pesky questions like 'before you hit that button, has it gone through QA and change control, have you updated the diagrams and how are you implementing adequate IAM controls?'

amybumble · 15/08/2023 08:06

Hi there, I'm not currently working in tech, but looking to change careers and move into data analytics in the near future. Any advice for places to look for junior roles (remote working ideally) would be appreciated...if that's allowed!

motherofbantams · 15/08/2023 08:16

Does Biotech count?

jeaux90 · 15/08/2023 08:22

51, lead a professional services sales team for a well known SW vendor.

Bloody love this industry, I'm a lone parent and it's been fantastic for me.

Ooohh @CyberCritical is in the room "look busy" Grin

jeaux90 · 15/08/2023 08:24

Although I did get fired for being pregnant 15 years ago but handed them their arses in the Tribunal Grin....it has got a lot better in the industry since.

byronicheroine · 15/08/2023 08:25
