If this isn’t photoshopped, then I would say this is 100% a big cat.

They are obviously thriving in the wild and do not need to be culled or moved into a zoo

'Clearest ever' picture could prove big cats are prowling the UK countryside

The photo was discovered in the files of a zoology organisation.

Yes, not sure what you mean by the '...'

I meant nothing by it, other than leading on to the picture.

I had forgotten that three dots at the end of a sentence are often used in a wanky way on MN.

This thread started out funny but quickly became depressing. Schools really need to spend more time teaching critical thinking.

"Depressing" is a bit of a strong word isn't it? Schools do teach critical thinking, not sure what that has to do with it. We know for a fact that there are big cats in the U.K., and some of us know that they are, or at least have at some point been, living in the wild because they have seen them first hand.

nonamesavailable123 · 15/08/2023 18:51

I saw a big cat last September. I am convinced that is what it was. It ran across the road in front of me ( a way along the road) it was too fast to be able to stop the car and get my phone out though

Whatever anyone has seen it isn't a panther. Panther is not a species in itself, it's a name given to the melanistic variants of leopards and jaguars (just to be pedantic)

I'm not getting into the do they / don't they roam the UK 😂

CraigN3247820 · 16/08/2023 14:15

It is definitely Photoshopped. There's lots of evidence online for that.
See for example, this thread on Twitter (or "X"...)

@QuestionableMouse I want to see a photo of your JRT that's the size of a labrador.

The original photo (left) appears to be available online.

I wonder if the "panthers" are kellas cats. Kellas are hybrids between Scottish Wildcats and domestic housecats or feral cats. They can grow quite big, up to around 4ft long including tail and around 15 inches tall - for comparison that's roughly Labrador sized (or beefy JRT sized).

Iam4eels · 16/08/2023 15:03

They're also fairly "fluffy" which makes them look bigger again and have elongated canines and a more angular head compared to domestic cats.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 16/08/2023 15:16

In the interests of research for those on this thread, I have watched the documentary that the photo features in. In the documentary the general consensus is also that it's a fake. There's some interesting stuff in the film - footprints and compelling eye-witness accounts, particularly from the early 80s, not long after the Wild Animals Act, which makes sense if that's when people were tipping their suddenly illegal pets out of their cars onto Bodmin moor etc. There was a fair bit of wishful thinking and some very wooden stuff to camera, and having some chap who claims to have seen Bigfoot presenting some of it doesn't inspire confidence. Not sure about their claims that fur found was a 99% match for leopard hair (there was stuff about different sorts of DNA and how you can't get decent DNA from hair but I was only half watching at that point). There was some distant footage of what looked, to me, like a fox jumping about in a field and some blurry trail camera stuff that looked like a deer's bottom to my uneducated eye.

It was an entertaining watch, though, in the way that those daft programmes about finding Bigfoot are. I might re-watch it to firm up the details as it was very late when I watched it and I'd had a large gin and tonic so may have dozed off and missed something vitally important.

EmmaEmerald · 16/08/2023 18:49

I watched the documentary linked on the last thread but I don't know if it's the same one. Was very calm and well balanced.

I thought it was well known and accepted that we have wallabies in the UK?

Yes, some escaped from Whipsnade Zoo years ago.

Valerie23 · 21/08/2023 09:12

This is a very clear photo of a Puma spotted where I sometimes walk.

Someone I know works for the highways agency picks up a road-kill capybara and wallaby every few years.

Maybe leopards are better at dodging cars at night?

Merapi · 21/08/2023 14:04

Well that's it @Valerie23 - irrefutable actual photographic proof of a puma in the British countryside.

Thank goodness someone else has said that. Everyone carrying on that they’ve seen panthers when there is no such creature.

I’ll try again, this is the picture I meant to post. This huge beast in the garden. No photoshop involved.

All big cats are panthers. The clue is in their scientific names.

I saw a big cat that looked so similar about 16 years ago in Northamptonshire. I obviously haven't ever told anyone because I would sound like a complete bloody lunatic. I wouldn't believe me, but it's definitely what I saw and I was close enough to not be able to explain it away as anything else.

Northants, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire border perhaps?
If so your not the only one!

@PriamFarrl any big cat with a genetic variant to make it black is a known as a panther. It's not some mythical creature fgs

I know it’s not a mythical creature ffs, but it doesn’t refer to one single creature, it is a generic term. There isn’t one single animal that is a panther.

ConsuelaHammock · 23/08/2023 15:12

Tdcp · 14/08/2023 16:18

Sorry but there is no way a big cat is prowling the countryside, let alone a bloody panther. For one they would be killing and eating livestock. Where are all the animal carcasses? A cat like that isn't living off bloody Sparrows.

Is there was one it would be shot and buried after it had attacked livestock! Don’t underestimate farmers and their ability to protect their livelihoods.

traytablestowed · 23/08/2023 15:54

@PriamFarrl there isn't one single animal that's a deer either, but if someone told you they'd seen a deer I'm pretty sure you wouldn't say

THERE IS NO SUCH CREATURE!
