“Possible evidence of big cat in wild in new clearest picture”

Soubriquet · 14/08/2023 14:29

If this isn’t photoshopped, then I would say this is 100% a big cat.

They are obviously thriving in the wild and do not need to be culled or moved into a zoo

'Clearest ever' picture could prove big cats are prowling the UK countryside

The photo was discovered in the files of a zoology organisation.

That was about 11 years ago.

@newnamethanks

'Has anyone seen a wild boar in the Forest of Dean? Apparently there are a LOT of them.'

My ex was always angry and talking about golf nonstop. It might have been him you saw.

traytablestowed · 14/08/2023 19:38

I saw one in Gloucestershire about 10 years ago. Absolutely unmistakeable. I would never have believed it but I saw it with my own eyes. Was flabbergasted and didn't even think to reach for my phone - I literally couldn't believe my eyes. I've only told close family cos I don't want people to think I'm loopy!

There was a poster on another thread who vividly recalled seeing the Nemesis rollercoaster at Alton Towers two years before it existed.

Our perceptions and memories are quite plastic.

Are you a big cat expert? Because "absolutely unmistakable" is quite bold. How close? How long for? In what lighting? Any vegetation?

swanling · 14/08/2023 19:46

Also, didn't sailors used to swear blind that they'd seen mermaids?

There's quite a big difference between accidentally thinking you went on a rollercoaster with a loop when you actually went on one with a corkscrew vs. accidentally remembering you saw a panther on your country walk 😂

I'm not a big cat expert but I know what I saw with my eyes. I don't care if people don't believe me 🤷‍♀️ makes no difference to me

Avatartar · 14/08/2023 20:12

I know they exist in the British countryside because I saw a black panther when out walking with a friend about 20 years ago. It was chasing a sheep. It had a massive long cat tail, it was a cat, the way it moved, not a domestic feline and not a black dog. I wasn’t on my own.

What, like the difference between glimpsing a domestic cat in the distance for a few seconds and believing you glimpsed a panther in the distance for a few seconds?

It's not that I don't believe you as such, more that I believe human perception is complicated.

Johnduttonsbuttocks · 14/08/2023 20:24

The arrogance of those dismissing people's experiences on here is the same boring arrogance you get with atheists, and on threads about ghosts. What is crucial is that the dismissive rejection NEVER causes people to disbelieve what they saw, and makes the skeptics sound aggressive.

I know what I saw...

Gingerkittykat · 14/08/2023 20:28

Have you reported it to Saving Wildcats?

https://savingwildcats.org.uk/about-saving-wildcats/scottish-wildcat-action/

I have definitely seen a wildcat twice whilst driving late at night, I reported it to them and they were very interested even though I didn't have a photo.

I drive the particular road I saw the wildcat a few times a week about 11pm to midnight several times a week for a few years and only saw the cat twice.

I love wildcats and at least there is actually proof that they exist!

Scottish Wildcat Action | Saving Wildcats

Built on a strong partnership keen to make a difference, Scottish Wildcat Action was the first national conservation plan with a vision to restore viable populations of wildcats north of the Highland fault line.

@swanling human perception can be complicated, but sometimes a spade is just a spade. Sometimes a panther is just a panther. Just because you personally haven't seen one, doesn't mean everyone who says they have is mistaken about it.

I don't think I have said they were all mistaken.

But to use the wildcat example of the poster before you - I know very little about wildcats beyond watching documentaries. If I had an unexpected glimpse of an animal that may have been a wildcat and then I told people about it, I wouldn't be surprised if they asked me how I knew.

I don't think it is unreasonable to ask people if they have the skills to identify the unusual species in question from a brief glimpse. With that "lion" in Germany, even the experts didn't have an easy time verifying its identity from a video that they could re-watch and pause.

traytablestowed · 14/08/2023 21:06

Well in my case it walked right across the path in front of me, about 10m away. I didn't see it and think "oh a black panther", I thought WTF is that and googled it as soon as I got home. I am 100% certain of what I saw and still remember it vividly. A panther does not look like a domestic cat 😂 you can look online or check in a zoo if you're interested.

The trouble is though with big cat sightings all you ever get is someone's recount and maybe a blurry photo. Surely even if the person who saw it didn't take a video or clear picture with the increase in things like CCTV, ring door bells, home security cameras etc there would be now be at least one clear piece of evidence if there genuinely were still big cats roaming around.

Thelonelygiraffe · 14/08/2023 21:43

Bonkers article! The pic was found in files at a zoology organisation, there's no record of when it was taken - could be 30 years ago - and no proof at all of where it was taken.

AnneElliott · 14/08/2023 21:48

I dont disbelieve that there might be some illegal pets abandoned in the wild, but if so why has no-one ever found a body? I can understand that while alive they are good at hiding (my 3 domestic cats certainly are!) but when they die, why hasn't someone (or a dog?) found their bodies?

angie6147 · 14/08/2023 21:54

About 20 years ago I was working nights in a nursing home. Floodlights came on in the yard and a large fawn coloured cat about the size of a Labrador walked past the window. No one believed me and assumed I was just really tired. About 6 months later it was on the news that a person in the area had been keeping two of them in a barn near to where I had seen it.

DyslexicPoster · 14/08/2023 22:03

I wanted to do my dissertation on this. I thought it would be pretty easy to find evidence if it existed. Foot print casts, poop identification, camar traps. You think the documentary would look at the scientific aspect

That would have been a great dissertation topic but as you've said the lack of any evidence that they're are still wild big cats in this country wouldn't make for much of a compelling essay. It would be hard to reach the word count when there was basically nothing you could use to debate that the cats were still out there.

First I would like to see proof that this was taken in Britain.

However, there are undoubtedly some big cats living wild in Britain, but they are unlikely to be breeding and establishing a population. If they were, we'd know it by know.

What we see is illegal exotic pets, abandoned by owners who can't handle them. They cannot survive indefinitely as they don't have sufficient prey. If they were regularly taking farm animals, there would be much more evidence. Some farm animals are taken, but they are few and far between.

This is why sightings are rare - they are isolated animals struggling to survive, not a breeding population.

As for "they are obviously thriving in the wild and do not need to be culled or moved into a zoo" - see above, and secondly of course they do. They are an alien species to the British ecosystem and do not belong in it.
