COVID cringe memories (light hearted)

Looking back at the pandemic, especially at its height in 2020, what made your toes curl?

  1. "Imagine". Enough said.
  2. The Marsh family.
  3. On the local news, footage was shown of the Thursday clap (may or June). There was a parade of bhangra drummers and smarmy bratty kids doing the irritating floss dance. Was that point the 'applause' was seen as having had it's day.

I know some people may mention the dancing nurses, I only saw tiny clips on the news. Even that made me cringe.

A couple in the village had supermarket home deliveries, but insisted on the delivery driver unloading half way down the drive way , and certainly not any closer to the house. Driver would leave it there. Once he's got off the driveway, the couple would then go out armed with anti bac wipes to clean their shopping, before they brought into the house.

Pointing my phone at a qr code and pretending to check in. My phone can't even read qr codes.

Floogal · 14/08/2023 21:46

Also the sad cases who thought they were intelligent and rebellious by walk-in around the shops coughing without covering their mouths.

Where have you been?!?!

My mother's insane obsession with loo rolls. The shortage was all her, OK! It can be traced back like a recessive gene to my mum. We make fun of her now but she was desperate to ensure we could wipe our bums. We reminded her of an invention called the shower in the event of no loo rolls 😆 😆

The clapping, obvs.

I'm so sorry. My heart breaks for people in that situation. I saw it here too.

However, I have huge sympathy for those managing nursing homes. They were in an impossible situation. They were so restrictive to protect their patients - several nursing home populations in Ireland were just wiped out by Covid, patients dying really horrible deaths with no proper care as they weren't medical establishments & they were under-staffed (the staff also had Covid, or were terrified of getting it). It was really tough & there were no easy choices.

(However, people entering were certainly not allowed roam at will, it was carefully managed, full PPE etc)

I don't blame the staff. I blame the care home owners who had the authority to allow key visitors in but chose not to allow this.
Covid did get into the home. My grandmother got it and was fine. No deaths in the home even when they were finally allowed out of their rooms.
They locked the patients in their rooms for 6 months including those that had no bathroom commode only. My grandmother didn't get a wash the entire time just bed bath.

Not being able to get my male kitten neutered. He started climbing the curtains, shredding them in the process and biting out ankles, so in the end we let him out and hoped he didn't impregnate too many of the local females.

That's awful. Your poor DGM 😢

Also as it was kicking off- various ' sightings' of the army travelling down the motorway ready to come patrol. Always seen by the friend of a friend ...

AnxiousFairyQueen · 14/08/2023 21:51

Did anyone notice the people on their daily walk who clearly didn’t usually go on walks? The sort of earnest, slow marching with the “Look at me everyone, I’m on my walk!!”

Yeah big deal, look at me walking normally, arms by my side…

Oh god, I've just remembered the supermarket delivery we had where the driver unloaded everything before he rang the door bell and ran back to his lorry. No carrier bags so he had literally unloaded all our shopping up the garden path, balanced in buses etc. 😂 Madness.

I never said anything's been categorically proven. Pretty hard to prove a government coverup. And it's very convenient that they predicted a pandemic isn't it.

In August 2020 the Terrence Higgins Trust gave advice about having sex "not kissing, wearing a face mask during sex and favouring positions where you’re not face-to-face may also help".

I’m pretty sure that’s where posters would go and then get annoyed anyone else was there

Not a cringe moment but a wth moment. While shopping in a supermarket and remembered I wanted to get a magazine for my dm who was in a nursing home. Walking over to the rack an elderly man practically jumped out of his skin as I came near him and flattened himself with arms outspread against the mags till I was no longer a danger to him. I assume that was his thinking then he scurried away like a bat out-of hell trying but not very successfully to avoid people.
Very bizarre moment.
Dh and I met up with a couple he had got to know over zoom in the ROI. Two minutes after sitting down we got subjected to at least an hour of conspiracy theories. There was an hour of my life I was never going to get back. We were sat outside as then you couldn't sit indoors to eat without proof of vaccination and they were vaccine refusers. After they left we went inside and had lunch after doing a bit of shopping.

LaMaG · 14/08/2023 22:01

A written postcard in my local supermarket on a notice board. Elderly gentleman looking for local person to form a household 'bubble', enjoys walks, reading etc. It just broke my heart.

I remember 2 neighbours chatting across the road at each other and their kids ventured off to the side without them noticing. They weren't touching but were near each other. My little girl then 6 came sobbing and running into the house 'mummy mummy x and y are not social distancing!'

Not cringey as such but the most bizarre for me.

Anyone from NI remember Stephen Nolan chasing maskless people around the petrol station Grin

Yes. I mean they were outside at the time as I recall.

Taking the PiLs (in their 80s) out for a pub lunch and not being able to drink alcohol yet 20 feet away loads of young lads were getting pished watching a game of football because they were "outdoors" in a gazebo.

Sitting outside on a freezing pavement in October to celebrate a birthday because alcohol could not be served indoors. We were just laughing about this nonsense last week.

Where do you live @RaraRachael ?
So many different rules .

Look up "zerocovidzoe" on Twitter. It's either a huge joke or an absolute tragedy.
