Bought cod, chips and peas last night, first time in about two years and I couldn't believe how much they cost! £14.70 😯

This was in seaside resort in Norfolk. I'm sure it was about £8.50 when I last had them.

I actually sent this to my friends the other day when I got fish and chips.

Neonyellowfish · 13/08/2023 21:07

i didn’t think it was that dear to be honest when I got it.

UncleBryn · 13/08/2023 21:13

We have a van that goes around our area once a week. Kids fish and chips is £5, kids sausage and chips £3.50. I have the kids as there are loads. Absolute bargain. I think the adults version is about £9. Some places charge a lot!

@BarbaraV what's a Wally?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/08/2023 21:35

About £8/head for F&C.

Was nearer £15/head in the Lake District at half term last autumn.

sodabreadjam · 13/08/2023 21:37

£9 for haddock and chips in Central Scotland. (We don't do cod in chip shops up here. )

For £9 you get two (smallish) fish with chips. For £7.30 you get one fish with chips.

Summerswimmer998 · 13/08/2023 21:38

It’s £15 in the holiday town I’m visiting at the moment as I just commented flicking heck. We doing oven stuff instead in the caravan.

I’d love to pay £6.90….

Not a chance around where I live though…

I expect to pay anywhere from £10-£13 around here

Bristol/Bath location.

Sommerled · 13/08/2023 21:43

£12.50 for haddock, chips and mushy peas. West coast of Scotland. No cod here either. Bit more for scallops, but less for scampi.

dullandgrey · 13/08/2023 21:44

I paid £9.50 for a regular haddock and chips, which was massive so I've got leftovers for lunch tomorrow, in West Yorkshire earlier today. I wonder if it's the same place?

HundredMilesAnHour · 13/08/2023 21:47

£13.60 for regular cod & chips takeaway price (£17.50 if you want to eat in). A side of mushy peas / curry sauce is an extra £2.95! 🙄London.

This was in the paper last week.

"Restaurant owners have served up a perfect comeback after a customer posted an online review of their fish and chips praising the meal, but moaning about the £8 cost. Debbie Davies, who posted a review on the restaurant’s public Facebookk_ page, wrote: “Lovely food and staff are amazing but I cannot see how you justify your prices, small fish and chips £8 plus and it was small?’
The Oxton Bar and Kitchen on Wirral came straight back with a response breaking down exactly what it costs them to make the dish -and inviting her to do it for cheaper at home.

They pointed out that after basic costs they are left with less than £4 from the dish - from which they have to pay staff, utility bills and business rates.
Their reply read: “Ok Debbie. Where do I begin? Out of that £8, our nasty government is charging you 20% vat which we collect by law on their behalf, so we’re left with £6.66."

Out of this, we need to buy the fresh ingredients; 1 haddock fillet, get a chef to make everything from scratch; a delicious beer batter, homemade tartare sauce, mushy peas and chunky chips (the whole cost of ingredients for this plate comes to roughly £2.70)
“This leaves us with £3.94 for which alas our pesky chef expects remuneration!! Then we realised the ‘lovely’ food doesn’t float to you, so we have to pay ‘amazing’ staff to serve you and clear up after you?!"

AddictedtoStarmix · 13/08/2023 21:48

I pay £4.75 for a battered sausage and chips in Central London.
Think a piece of cod is £8.
i really want some now 🤣.

skippy67 · 13/08/2023 21:48

Large cod and small chips. £10.50. I'm in SE London.

Pandaflop · 13/08/2023 21:49

Just over a tenner for a small cod and small chips. It's tricky as the price of everything has obviously gone up, but DHs brother owns and runs a chippy and they raised prices to find some evenings they were hardly getting anyone through the door! Now they've reduced prices a bit (still turning a profit) the increase in customers makes it worth the electric etc costs of being open. Also do a value kids meal over the summer, half portion of chips, small sausage and a sauce for £1 or free with an adults meal.

I have to say I hate responses like this, sure point out overheads and price increases are a thing, but the sarcy response puts me off a place. I know it's wrong but with independent businesses the people who own and work in them are a huge influence on whether I spend money there. Unfortunately I don't live near my BIL to have cheap chips :D but we have 2 chippy here, one is more expensive but the owner is infinitely nicer so I always go there.
