I’m a gleek. I enjoy watching glee a lot and I do like a lot of their covers.

I can’t remember all of them but start with

Last Friday Night by Katy Perry. Covered by Darren Kriss aka Blaine Anderson. I much prefer the cover to this. The original seems to lack depth.

On the other hand Here’s to us by Halestorm covered by Lea Michele aka Rachel Berry is no where near as good. Lzzy Hale just rules every song of hers and no one can compare to that.

Agree about Fast Car-the new version just sounds like karaoke.

I prefer kd lang’s version of Crying.

ithinkicanithinkican · 13/08/2023 22:09

I love Bat for Lashes cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'I'm on Fire'. Very moody.

TooManyAnimals94 · 13/08/2023 22:12

Miley Cyrus's version of Jolene is better than Dolly's but Dolly's I will Always Love You better than Whitney.

I prefer The Animals' versions of both House Of
The Rising Sun and Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood.

AlphaAlpha · 13/08/2023 22:14

@Iheartmysmart came on to say the same.

Also George's version of I can't make love me.

boobot1 · 13/08/2023 22:15

Corrs - Dreams is better than Fleetwood Mac

ManyATrueWord · 13/08/2023 22:16

Erasure's "Take a chance on me". It takes a lot to go one better than Abba with an Abba song but I love this version.

Personally, I think Nina Simone's cover of 'Suzanne' is incredible, and I prefer it to the original (ducks for cover...)

On the Leonard Cohen theme… I would say The Handsome Family version of Famous Blue Raincoat.

Ohmylovejune · 13/08/2023 22:20

I love Bruce Springsteens rock version and Deacon Blues acoustic version.of Dancing in the dark equally

Lizzy1980 · 13/08/2023 22:22

Divine Comedy do an amazing cover of Time to Pretend by MGMT. it’s totally different, I hadn’t realised what a beautiful song it was

DPotter · 13/08/2023 22:22

Lissie's version of Dreams is better than the Corrs by some miles.

Agree with Sinead's version of Nothing Compare's to you

I suggest Roberta Flack's cover of 'The first time ever I saw your face', over the original sung by Peggy Seager. The song was written about her by her husband Ewan McColl, but Roberta's version has so much more emotion and passion

LetsFandango · 13/08/2023 22:23

Where did our love go - Soft Cell version so much better than The Supremes

BrindleAbyssinianGuinea2 · 13/08/2023 22:24

Originals:

Elton John- Benny and the Jets

Judy Collins- Both Sides Now

Simon and Garfunkel- The Sound of Silence
Bridge Over Troubled Water

MrsRachelDanvers · 13/08/2023 22:24

Also Pretenders version of Stop Your Sobbing was better-and I love a
The Kinks.

I like both of those versions too.

Always annoys me that Radio 2 play The Corrs awful version of Old Town, for the life of me can't understand why.

Phil L's version is really honest and sad. The Corrs' version is insipid.

This! And Roberta Flack sang Killing Me Softly better than The Fugees.

BeverleyMacker · 13/08/2023 22:26

Huge Prince fan but I much prefer Chaka khan's version of "I feel for you" and Sinead O Conner's "Nothing compares 2U".

SighNoMorella · 13/08/2023 22:29

The Sound of Silence by Disturbed, my DH played it for me and wow, its powerful! Definitely worth a listen!

Nobody sang Nothing Compares 2U like Sinead (God bless her soul). Her cover of Silent Night never feels to give me chills, any time of year!

NomNomNominativeDeterminism · 13/08/2023 22:32

@Lizzy1980 I love the Divine Comedy’s version of Noel Coward’s I Went to a Marvellous Party

BrindleAbyssinianGuinea2 · 13/08/2023 22:33

Many versions of Piece Of My Heart but I think Dusty Springfield probably sang it best, closely followed by Beverly Knight.

Many versions of L'Amor Est Bleu (Love is Blue) but Tracey Huang is better than Vicky Leandros or Paul Mauriat.

Mindovermatter247 · 13/08/2023 22:36

Massive Gleek here too… before I start on the covers I prefer…
one non glee related song
fast car by Tracy chapman is so much better than the Ella eyre cover..

glee songs
Mine- santana sang it way better than taylor swift
dog days are over… just feel like it sounded much better from the new directions
nutbush city limits, I like the original but like santana’ version way more
big girls don’t cry… love kurt, Rachel and blaine singing this.
and lastly as much as I love Demi lovato, I much prefer Rachel and Brodie singing give your heart a break.

BlueMoe · 13/08/2023 22:18

On the Leonard Cohen theme… I would say The Handsome Family version of Famous Blue Raincoat.

Just came on cos i saw The Hansome Family and no one's ever heard of them.

Saw them in Liverpool a few years ago and they were amazing.

BrindleAbyssinianGuinea2 · 13/08/2023 22:41

some more covers I prefer:

U2 - All Along The Watchtower

The Byrds- Turn, Turn, Turn

Whitney Houston- I Will Always Love You

Aretha Franklin- A Little Respect

tiberseptim · 13/08/2023 22:43

Marilyn Manson's version of I put a spell on you, and Nine Inch Nail's cover of Physical are both excellent. However no-one does a better version of Spirit in the Sky than the original by Norman Green baum.
