I’m a gleek. I enjoy watching glee a lot and I do like a lot of their covers.

I can’t remember all of them but start with

Last Friday Night by Katy Perry. Covered by Darren Kriss aka Blaine Anderson. I much prefer the cover to this. The original seems to lack depth.

On the other hand Here’s to us by Halestorm covered by Lea Michele aka Rachel Berry is no where near as good. Lzzy Hale just rules every song of hers and no one can compare to that.

Also how could I forget Don't Leave Me This Way by the Communards. Best version by a mile.

You made my day just by reminding me of that!

Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen - vastly superior to Frankie's version, although my DH passionately disagrees.

well @budgiegirl I'd be prepared to fight your DH on this.
Bruce Springsteen did the absolute WORST COVER VERSION OF ANYTHING EVER in 1988: acoustic version of Born To Run. Fucker. But anyone else doing anything to it is a crime against music. Springsteen's version is perfection.

See also Joni Mitchell. I accept that she's a genius but her voice is a three aspirin headache.
I prefer Judie Tzuke's version of God Only Knows to the Beach Boys, blasphemous I know. Also her version of Fall At Your Feet.
Thin Lizzy's version of Rosalie, although I love Bob Seger.
The Wings version of Live And Let Die is much better than GnR's bloated monstrosity.

Argggh Bob and Joni both do their own songs best. Other versions feel watered down. Or in most cases the artist covering Bob erases the humour or the spikiness in the song and makes it bland. And very few singers have Joni's range. Anyway, it takes all sorts.

Joni's range is where my problem lies. Her voice goes right through me. I have the same problem with Richard Thompson.

I love Richard Thompson!

I prefer Bryan Ferry's 'Jealous Guy' over the original by a long shot.

I can't listen to any covers of Abba songs.

mathanxiety · 16/08/2023 16:25

I also love Nirvana's version of 'The Man who Sold the World'. They made it their own.

mathanxiety · 16/08/2023 16:31

And weird but wonderful - the Polish group Tulia's version of Enjoy the Silence is really cool.

I like the version of Radiohead’s creep used on the Social Network trailer

RoseandViolet · 16/08/2023 18:57

Agree re Heart’s version of Stairway to Heaven…and I’m a huge Led Zep fan.

I love Erasure's Abbaesque EP. And I really don't like ABBA.

The Dead South's versions of The Misfits Saturday Night and You are my Sunshine. The least cheerful version of Sunshine you'll ever hear!

That's my favourite version of sunshine. I never thought it was supposed to be cheerful 🤣

WhoWants2Know · 17/08/2023 10:37

I love Fall Out Boy's version of Beat It

Brefugee · 17/08/2023 10:52

Not really a cover but I'm loving Fallout Boy's reworking of We Didn't Start The Fire

come together by Michael Jackson

Yes! That SLAPS! Fantastic the way he attacks the verses!

Perfect slice of pop/funk!

Michael's cover of Smokey Robinson's Who's Loving You aged 11 is better than Smokey's original. Even Smokey agreed!

Whitney's cover of Dolly Parton is better too.

Puff Daddy's version of Every Breath You Take for Notorious I prefer to the Police.
