I’m a gleek. I enjoy watching glee a lot and I do like a lot of their covers.

I can’t remember all of them but start with

Last Friday Night by Katy Perry. Covered by Darren Kriss aka Blaine Anderson. I much prefer the cover to this. The original seems to lack depth.

On the other hand Here’s to us by Halestorm covered by Lea Michele aka Rachel Berry is no where near as good. Lzzy Hale just rules every song of hers and no one can compare to that.

Spanky Wilson cover of Sunshine of Your Love.

Screamin Jay Hawkins original: I Put A Spell On You

@Crowfinch I came on to also say Julia Jacklin, but her cover of 'Shiver' by The Boys Next Door. Its sublime.

Giggorata · 13/08/2023 21:47

Joe Cocker made the song With a Little Help from My Friends his own, even the Beatles said so.

When You Wish Upon a Star by Eels, instead of Jiminy Cricket

And much prefer Goin' Down Slow by Free, with Paul Rodgers on vocals than the original St Louis Jimmy version.

TheDogsMother · 13/08/2023 21:49

@Coastalcreeksider Absolutely re Radio 2. Every time they play the Corrs version it sets me off ranting about why they never play Phil Lynott's one. Never 🤣

Coastalcreeksider · 13/08/2023 21:49

Ain't Necessarily So by Bronski Beat

SomersetBrie · 13/08/2023 21:50

Michael Stipe singing U2's One.
Miley Cyrus singing Zombie complements The Cranberries' version. Not better but both were meant to exist.

I love Placebo’s cover of Running Up That Hill. The start of it gives me goosebumps!

Agree about this. On the Kate Bush theme I much prefer Futureheads version of Hounds of Love

Chichz · 13/08/2023 21:54

I also love Behind Blue Eyes sung by Limp Bizkit, which my husband is very embarrassed about!!

Bit a split on the Sound of Silence...

I once found a brilliant, male version of Adele's 'Hello' but can't remember the guy's name. 🤔

NCGrandParent · 13/08/2023 21:55
  1. Aretha Franklin - Bridge Over Troubled Water
  2. (not really an "original" as I think he wrote it for her but also recorded his own version")Prince "I feel for You " (although love CK's version too)

Darren Criss is an amazing singer.

Panic at the Disco did a great cover of Say It Ain't So by Weezer.

whatabeautifulwedding · 13/08/2023 21:58

And Weezer did a good version of Enter Sandman.

WhatAPalaverer · 13/08/2023 21:59

Jeff Buckley’s hallelujah and and Tracy chapman’s fast car are the only decent versions. More niche- pepper’s version of dream it possible (played at a friend’s funeral).

Iamtheonwandlonely · 13/08/2023 22:01

Gary Jules Mad World is a much superior version that Tears for Fears.

ilovetomatosoup · 13/08/2023 22:01

Hoosiers cover of Lovestoned to Justin timberlakes.

shangelawasrobbed · 13/08/2023 22:02

I like:

  • the Erasure version of A Little Respect
  • the Marilyn Manson version of Tainted Love
  • the Eurythmics version of Sweet Dreams
  • the Jeff Buckley version of Hallelujah
  • the Sinead O'Connor version of Nothing Compares 2U

And I agree with PP that the new cover version of Fast Car by Tracy Chapman is the worst cover I've ever heard!

ilovetomatosoup · 13/08/2023 22:01

Hoosiers cover of Lovestoned to Justin timberlakes.

Not heard this - will need to have a Google.

Iamtheonwandlonely · 13/08/2023 22:03

Metallica version of Turn the Page is just gorgeous

whatabeautifulwedding · 13/08/2023 22:04

Although I still LOVE the original, Crooked Fingers did an amazing and very different version of Under Pressure.
(Discovered whilst watching gossip girl)

savethatkitty · 13/08/2023 22:04

On the Glee train. Adam Lambert's (aka Elliott) cover of Marry the Night is sensational.

Blarn · 13/08/2023 22:05

Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshee's version of Passenger, by Iggy Pop. It's amazing and definitely better than the original.

crystalize · 13/08/2023 22:07

Ewan Mcgregor's version of 'Your song' by Elton John, in Moulin Rouge film.

BrindleAbyssinianGuinea2 · 13/08/2023 22:08

Covers I prefer:

Harper's Bizarre - 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)

The Carpenters- Ticket To Ride

Jeff Buckley- Hallelujah

Helen Shapiro- Walk On By

Edwin Hawkins Singers- Oh Happy Day

The Four Aces- Friendly Persuasion (Thee I Love)

The Diamonds- Why Do Fools Fall in Love

Dc Talk- Jesus is Still Alright With Me

“And much prefer Goin' Down Slow by Free, with Paul Rodgers on vocals than the original St Louis Jimmy version”
@Giggorata this is a great song and I’ve never heard the original. Thank you! I’ve just been on a short tour of versions on youtube.
