£8.10 on a flipping chicken!

Went to Lidl yesterday to spend as little as possible on a small shop to get us through the weekend. Needed a chicken for Sunday dinner and as a vegetarian I didn’t want to hang around looking at them all. I was sure I picked one from the shelf labelled as £3.75. DM has just informed me that it was a free range fancy chicken costing £8.10 on the label! Already in the oven. It had better be a bloody gorgeous chicken for the people eating it! I don’t even benefit!

What’s been your most costly shopping mistake? Make me feel less stupid please!

The desire for the cheapest meat really is a race to the bottom. The last whole chicken I bought was £17.80 and not particularly big. Get decent quality meat, but far less frequently?

Sennelier1 · 15/08/2023 08:30

I pay 7 € (Belgium) at my Moroccan butcher's and that's the cheapest you'll get here 🤷🏼‍♀️

LuckySantangelo35 · 15/08/2023 08:42

Maybe we should all just eat less meat and then we do buy it can make sure it’s good quality etc

No one needs to eat meat everyday or every other day even. Once a week is fine

Im baffled by the arrogance and lack of knowledge. Veganism is not sustainable.
in a fairy tale world it seems sensible but it is not realistic. Nor is telling the world not to eat meat or use animal products. Sustainability is another story. Getting people to stop wasting and using all animal parts… Stop using synthetic non biodegradable materials. Stop promoting ultra processed foods. Stop rhe excessive use of gums and crap added to fake mylks. Stop promoting almond milk when it erodes water supply in a draught-impacted environment.

Do some actual research and research who funds the research.

I’m also baffled by the lack of knowledge and arrogance of yourself. I think you’re the one that needs to do some proper research and needs to educate themselves.
Beef is very harmful for the environment, through the release of methane and the land and water it takes to produce the feed for the cows to eat. Vegan diets have been scientifically proven to be better for the environment.
Keeping animals crammed together is a source of pathogens and has already proven to be a risk to humans and that risk continues to increase.

This is exactly what I think. I wouldn't be militant and expect to give up meat but so many people expect to have meat with every meal. It's really not necessary. Get some good quality meat and have it twice a week. I think meat should be eaten with a certain understanding and respect that it's an animal who was a living sentient being. People shouldn't expect cheap meat that they can shovel down mindlessly at each meal.

Well said.

This we agree on (which is why I previously said humans cause far more ecological damage than cats). But if we know cats are harming local wildlife then we shouldn't be breeding them to the extent that we do. There are plenty of cats who need homes.
But yes - there's a hell of a lot more damage caused by humans than any other animal. Cats are the tip of the iceberg.

Have we got to like each other now? 😆

😘

PurpleButterflyWings · 15/08/2023 10:10

@SallyWD

I also agree about cats. I love them, and have one myself - (spayed!) but there are too many really. as sooo many people don't have their cats spayed. And whilst I don't want the species wiping out there ARE too many, and not enough homes for them, and they do kill and maim needlessly. As we said though, humans are worse - much worse - as they should know better. I think there's too many dogs too and too many irresponsible dog owners.

Indeed we have. Good mates now 😁

I was on holiday in South Africa, saw a beautiful cushion cover for what I thought was £15 got my conversion rates completely wrong and ended up paying £50, didn’t realise until I got back to where I was staying and looked at the receipt !!

AdoraBell · 15/08/2023 11:19

I’m late to the party, I agree that buying the cheapest meat options isn’t good. I don’t judge people who can’t afford organic or free range. DH used to believe that cheapest is best and more of it is better - because that’s always been his parent’s attitude- but has now realised the difference and finally stopped whinging when there’s not meat on the plate.

As I said, no judgment for anyone buying cheaper meats out of necessity.

SillyOldBucket · 15/08/2023 13:49

I dont think I have ever paid more than a fiver for a chicken.

It was quite recently on holiday. We went to the local large Carrefour and bought what we thought were lovely fresh, local prawns for x euros per kilo. Turns out it was x euros per prawn. We spent £47 euros on fucking prawns!

Yes, you'd be paying a heck of a lot more for a basic chicken in France. I'm very interested and glad to see that lots of people have a healthy attitude to higher welfare poultry. With any luck factory farms will get phased out but I won't hold my breath.

AlexReventa · 16/08/2023 17:19

For the extra £4 it’s had a better life. I’m amazed a vegetarian made such a comment.

GlomOfNit · 18/08/2023 15:09

OP, I'm astonished that you didn't notice from the packaging that it was free range, that you didn't realise free range birds are going to be more expensive, that you didn't notice at the till (given you said you were trying to spend as little as possible for a weekend food shop - when I go in with a limited budget I'm adding it up in my head as I go round. I'd notice an extra £4!), but mostly that you say you're a vegetarian but are fine with buying caged chickens. Hmm
Lidl and Aldi have recently raised the price of their free range chicken, which were always suspiciously cheap compared with other supermarkets, but that's still not a bad price to pay for one, at all. It's a life that was ended so you and your family could consume it - what price on that?

DaNcInGtEqUiLaCaT · 19/08/2023 16:33

My husband eats meat so he buys it and cooks it for himself. One Xmas he came back with a turkey crown for himself and the cats. I asked him why he's spent £48 when after one meal and few sandwiches, it would be eaten by the cats. He said that he saw a £12 price (unfortunately that was the price per pound!)
I sat and ate my Linda Mac sausages because I didn't want to spend £6 on a while bloody nut roast/ whatever was on the Xmas veggie aisle at the time!!!
I think £6-8 is usual for a chicken isn't it?
