Last minute break ideas

Unfortunately planned holiday abroad not going ahead due to OH work so have a birthday weekend for my 10yr old looming next week, 2 other children ages 8 & 6 and I'm solo. Weather looks hideous which doesn't help... located in Midlands so can drive pretty much everywhere fairly easily. Any ideas??

York? Load of things to do indoors - Castle Museum, Jorvik, Dig, Railway Museum, Minster, Clifford Tower, Hole in Wand Golf, a wander around the shops We stay at the Novotel as it has a pool.

A walk around the walls is fun too. If weather better than planned Museum Gardens are lovely. And you can do a boat trip on the river.

My other suggestion would be Liverpool, loads of Museums to visit - World Museum, Maritime, Western Approaches, Museum of Liverpool. You could do a ferry trip on the Mersey. Hope you find something fun to make up for not going on holiday.
