Please help! What would be making this hurt so much??

I've had this increasing pain in my upper right arm for weeks now. It started as a kind of niggle whenever I would raise my arm in a kind of shoulder press motion. I had to stop doing any motion like that at the gym because it started to hurt too much.
Since then, that pain has stopped but now the outer arm is painful and also numb? The skin feels numb when I touch it and the pain is there constantly. It's like a dull but strong ache regardless of what position its in. Almost like I've laid on it for ages?
I will go to the doctor but I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas, particularly as it's getting worse not better.

Please help! What would be making this hurt so much??

Sounds as though you might have trapped a nerve.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 13/08/2023 12:28

Was just going to say the same
I trapped a nerve in my shoulder and had the pain you describe
I was given Pregabilin which was the only thing that helped
It was so bad at first that I couldn't even lift a full coffee mug
You have my sympathy

Trapped or pinched nerve I expect.

My dad suggested rotator cuff injury but it's not actually in the shoulder joint. The pain stops below the shoulder.
Trapped nerve sounds possible! Is it something that needs medication or will it sort itself out? It's hideous!

In my experience You need nerve painkillers such as Pregabilin or Gabapentin which actually work on the nerve whereas paracetamol etc don't
You could try a mini tens machine which can block the signals approx. £20
In my case it was more painful than natural childbirth( baby came too fast!)

Thank you so much I'll try to see the gp tomorrow 🤞

I had a rotator cuff injury and had constant referred pain in my upper arm

Littlefish · 13/08/2023 16:29

Could be frozen shoulder.

How old are you?

There are links with peri/menopause.

Thebigblueballoon · 13/08/2023 16:30

I had exactly what you are describing and the constant, dull ache drove me batty. Went to the doctors and it turned out to be a trapped nerve. I was prescribed 30/500mg Cocodamol tablets and they really helped control the pain.

I was going to say this. I had a frozen shoulder last year. Pain started in outer arm and got worse and worse. Couldn't lie on that side at all.

I have a damaged rotor cuff from a fall which has referred pain exactly where you are experiencing pain. I have been given exercises by a physio which help a lot. Hopefully your GP will refer you

Ditto.

Your dad could be right 😊

Afonavon · 13/08/2023 17:04

I would add that just hoping that it will resolve itself was a BIG mistake of mine. I left it two months before I went to the GP for help. I became more and more limited in my use of the arm as it stiffened up as I stopped using it due to the pain.

ALongHardWinter · 13/08/2023 17:38

Possibly a frozen shoulder? I have this problem and I often experience pain in my upper arm on that side, varies from mild to so painful it hurts just to move my arm.

I'm 32. I'm hoping not menopause but I'll keep an eye on that, thank you. I didn't know there was a link to that.

Sounds like bursitis, naproxen or another anti inflammatory until it gets better
