Does this annoy you ?

Its not massive generally. But could be to some due to special needs etc .

So when in family restaurant. The adult meal is brought out 1st and then the children are still waiting. Then you can't eat because the kids are not eating yet . Also I'm gonna have to cut up their food. So I still can't eat.

Also I have always had this thing about kids always first. So it could just be a me thing.

Sounds like a you thing. It wouldn't have even crossed my mind!

CandyflossKaren · 12/08/2023 21:02

What/where is a 'family' restaurant??

LonelyFlans · 12/08/2023 21:03

Completely agree OP

TheThingIsYeah · 12/08/2023 21:10

Do you wait until everyone has been served before starting to eat?

I don't. I tuck straight in! The Debrettes Guide to Etiquette and Modern Manners backs me up on this.

Not for everyone. But definitely for children who need help with their food. And I just don't think it feels nice for them watching

When dc were younger, id ask for theirs to come first

Yeh but that doesn't really work when you have young kids does it. Most people would feel pretty guilty tucking in whilst their hungry kids watched. I mean kids get ravenous because they are still growing.

soundsys · 12/08/2023 21:18

Not a you think, it is annoying. If the kids know what they want we order their food with the drinks and then take a bit longer do decide what we fancy. Then theirs arrives first and I can help them with cutting etc without mine going cold

Mammyloveswine · 12/08/2023 21:21

Pisses me right off!! I'm not exactly going to sit stuffing my face whilst my kids are sat without!!

Ozgirl75 · 12/08/2023 21:23

god I could never start eating while other people were waiting! That’s insanely bad manners. Whether adults or children, can people really not wait for the few minutes until their food arrives?

HunterHearstHelmsley · 12/08/2023 21:23

Many many moons ago, I was a waitress at a pub. Our policy was to serve children's meals first, for obvious reasons. I went there recently and seemingly the policy has changed. The adult meals came out a good 10 minutes before the children's.

The adult meals end up cold and the children get grumpy. It's common sense to serve the children's meal first.

I'm unlikely to go back there as it was more stressful than just cooking.

SmileyClare · 12/08/2023 21:24

You could give the children some of your food or give them a bread roll/breadstick or something while they’re waiting for their own food?

Presumably not a long wait for their own food?
I wouldn’t feel annoyed or let it spoil a meal out!

Fiddlerdragon · 12/08/2023 21:24

I’ve worked in quite a few family friendly restaurants, and the rule is always to bring the childrens meals out first. It’s common sense for the children to have their meals first, no toddlers going to sit there happily waiting while the adults tuck into their food.

pimplebum · 12/08/2023 21:36

We nearly always get the kids meals first we would order kids meals with drinks and then when they arrive order our main and kids get their ice cream when our mains arrive

But I'd eat my food if it arrived first giving kids some chips to keep happy

That's not always possible. May work for a toddlers though

Really does make sense to me. I'm glad I'm not the only one to think that way

I think it happens sometimes to us and I just chop up a bit of mine to give them while we wait for theirs. If it's something they don't like then that's a time killer right there because you can tease them about how yummy it is going to be and keep waving your forkful in their direction etc. but I eat my food quite cold so I can see that if you liked food piping hot it's a bit annoying. If it was just my nuclear family I'd start tbh!
