Carpet in the living room - debate

We live in a fixer upper and currently renovating downstairs. Our house is a funny layout but adjoining rooms (utility, downstairs bathroom & kitchen) will be tiled but now we’re looking at decor for our living room that opens onto the back garden.

DH is very laidback and doesn’t really have much of an opinion on the decor as a whole but seems firmly set on that living rooms have to be carpeted. Honestly he’s horrified at the idea of a hard floor (was looking at wood but due to budget probably laminated) as apparently carpet is homely, and all living rooms are carpet.

As there’s only been a couple of things DH has an opinion on I’ve gone with just as I’m making 99% of all decisions but I don’t know why I can’t seem to agree on it.

The only people I can think of with hard flooring in their living rooms are all 80+.

Most people I know would love hardwood floors but the price is so prohibitive. So they go with wood-alike options.

Carpets seem so old school.

Carpet cleaning in situ just barely washes the top of the fibers and forces grime downwards. (Peel up some and see what's under!)

My rug cleaner thoroughly shampoos and rinses the entire piece.

I’ve got better things to worry about than a bit of dirt under my carpet!

My adult daughter and I are having a similar debate. She is influenced by all the modern trends including hard floors. Personally I prefer carpet as find them cosy.

Another thing for me - I spent along time in this council house unable to afford flooring so we lived with a rug and the wooden floor boards for years. For me hard floors equal poverty (yes, I know logically there is a huge difference between nice hard flooring and no flooring) so being to afford a lovely carpet makes me feel like I've moved on from that part of my life.

We have wood effect ceramic tiles planks in every room downstairs, with huge rugs in the sitting room covering most of the visible floor. I like it.

I’m having a similar debate with myself. We have got decent floorboards and everyone says how nice they will look sanded with a nice big rug. Then I look at rugs and am not sure what I want and big ones are expensive and think about drafts coming up through the boards and how much warmer carpet would be.

Think we will move in and live with boards at the rate I am going ..

Sustainability? What could be more sustainable than floorboards?

Not everyone has wooden floorboards though do they. If you live in a modern house your floors are either concrete or ply boards. Then surely you would be looking for something to cover them with. Also if i am having carpet i want a wool carpet for quality and durability which is sustainable, thanks anyway.

I would love to carpet our lounge. We will once the DC are old enough to be more reliable about not spilling drinks and aren't doing painting/glue/glitter type crafts.

Carpet will always be my ideal but I tolerate LVT as the sensible option for now.
