Has anyone here ever been around people coughing plenty and didn't get it?

I had to go into the city today. I went into a few shops and a shopping centre. Nearly everywhere I went to, there were people coughing. I had to get a bus home and there was someone coughing and it sounded like a crops between a dry and chesty cough.

I was walking down stairs today and a man was walking up the stairs. He turned his head into my direction just to let out a big cough, right into my ear and head direction. 'Go fuck yourself' says I and it was only then he may have realised something and he did apologise but still.

There was no manners being carried out by many, many people. No containing germs. No attempt to even cover a cough. It was all just cough, cough, cough into the open.

I had to go to town today.

Unfortunately I am now anxious that I am exposed to whatever is going around. I am not overly anxious about covid. It's not about covid. I can't afford to get sick right now. I have an important week coming up next week not only that work will kill me if I get sick and have to stay away. They won't kill me but they won't be pleased with me having time off. I have an underlying condition as well to manage.

How hard is it for people just to carry out manners and cover their coughs. Just cover any potential germs and quit spreading around their colds and flus and whatever else they might have and just minimise the onwards spread to other people.

I crossed the path of so many coughs today, I think it would be likely there would be some infectious stuff coughed about today instead of crossing people with prolonged coughs from an older colds.

Have you always been this anxious about your health? Or is it since covid?

Anyway, I'd take a vitamin c and zinc tablet daily and that should help

painochocolate · 12/08/2023 17:12

Oh and maybe that vicks first defense stuff

Pre covid - I would be aware of others not carrying out manners properly especially when it came to coughing and sneezing.

It's only really since covid that I am anxious. It's because I have an important week coming up next week and I can't get sick. If it was any other week I would just take what comes my way.

Thanks for the advice for vitamin c and zinc and first defence. Going to get them now at the pharmacy before they close for tomorrow.

I'm disappointed to see that we went through two years with a pandemic and so many people came away without learning anything and having no manners.

Containing germs or potential harmful germs costs nothing on people but it's not being done.

Slept in same bed as hubby 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dacadactyl · 12/08/2023 17:27

Yeah like thousands of times as well. Rarely get a cold.

OceanicBoundlessness · 12/08/2023 17:29

Yeah, loads of times.
I'd second taking plenty of vitamin c. - a couple of grams thru the day.... And zinc if you start to feel under the weather.

You do know a huge % of coughers don't have an infection? Something causing a tickle, smokers cough, asthma, allergies, acid reflux all off the top of my head. OK I get what what you say about not covering their mouths, but don't jump to the conclusion that you're about to drop down dead because someone coughed in your direction.

grayhairdontcare · 12/08/2023 17:32

Every cough is not not covid

CoffeeWithCheese · 12/08/2023 17:35

Wasn’t you in Aldi last night going off on me cos I sneezed once with my mouth covered was it?

Got a right gobful of abuse from someone. I don’t have covid - I have raging hayfever.

ButterCrackers · 12/08/2023 17:36

The people who cough everywhere and those that sneeze everywhere are thoughtless of others. I was on a train and a man just across was sneezing out with full force. So disgusting. Why not just cough and sneeze into your arm if you have no tissue.

Berlinlover · 12/08/2023 17:46

I’ve worked in a supermarket for the past 21 years, the last time I had a cold was 2018.

Somethingsnappy · 12/08/2023 18:09

I'm around people coughing a lot (including my kids in term time, so definitely viral) and hardly ever get anything. I recommend a vitamin D supplement.

Yeah, I understand that however there was definitely a cough on the bus that sounded chesty and that I would supect would be viral. It sounded nasty.

I used to have a heavy supplement regime but then I came down with depression back in March and there were some days I was hardly able to lift my head from my pillow in my bed never mind keeping on top of supplements. I'm back taking supplements now but I do skip some days taking supplements.

Definitely not me in Aldi last night. Sorry to read about your hayfever and hope you feel better soon.

My issue was that there was constant coughs today from people and so little manners from people. I just had enough by mid afternoon and then there was a man who just coughed right into my face on stairs. He could have turned the other way or covered his mouth.

I've had a dry irritating cough for 14 years now.

It's all been investigated. I've never smoked.

But people didn't notice it AT ALL before Covid! Now every one looks at my like I'm a walking disease. I can't help it. It can't be fixed. It's annoying to me as much as it is to anyone else

usernother · 12/08/2023 18:40

If you were that worried OP you should've stayed at home.

Ponderingwindow · 12/08/2023 18:40

I cough nearly constantly when I’m out in public. I absolutely hate it, but I’m basically constantly being triggered by allergies from cleaning supplies and people’s personal care products. If it’s just low level coughing it’s a good day. I absolutely cover my coughs and even try to turn away, but my throat is closing up and I can’t do anything to stop the coughing.

I pose no real danger to people unless I also happen to have a virus that I don’t know about yet. It’s the other people that are the danger to me and making me cough in the first place.

Funco · 12/08/2023 18:50

Thanks for explaining about your chronic coughs and I am so sorry to read about them. I hope you all get some respite soon from the coughs and get better.

I think if any of those coughs today was viral, I think I will be getting a dose. Unfortunately. I was going through a good patch for a few weeks but I had a week from hell. I have a disgruntled ex friend who won't leave me alone harassing me and I was just on edge all week because there's fresh torment from her and feeling sick because of it all. It's from the torment of her wrath and fury. I feel run down and just exhausted and so tired.

Hardly ever, I’ve never had covid to my knowledge unless I’ve been completely asymptomatic and I work In healthcare where we’ve recently stopped wearing masks and had covid positive cough near me for an extended time never got it

CoffeeWithCheese · 12/08/2023 20:25

In a direct answer to the question- I was doing some shadowing in the local hospital recently and was in and out (with varying levels of PPE depending on the exact requirements for that patient) of rooms of confirmed covid+ patients and watching swallowing assessments where cough reflexes are being triggered - so lots of secretions flying around - didn’t catch anything. Likewise I get coughed on fairly regularly by clients (who really can’t help it) and not caught anything there either.

I would take a cold or covid right now over this years run of the pollen count to be fair though
