Just had a week in on a Balearic Island
Did 5 supermarket shops.
shelves fully stocked, brilliant choice of food and produce and significantly cheaper than here.
we are being absolutely screwed over by this government, and all the other wealthy robbing companies.

I know some Brexit loving lunatics will be along soon to suggest otherwise….

The NHS (peace be upon it) got its extra £350m alright. Actually, more like £500m compared to 2016. It chomps its way through £150bn+ a year. It doesn’t need more money; it needs to be more efficient with it.

Yes I think it's beyond needing more money (although it has less spent on it than comparable countries), the first priority should be about reallocating the funding it already gets. Paying permanent staff fair wages for example rather than loads of agency staff, back to basics of prioritising patient care rather than the other random initiatives that don't actually add value to healthcare or people's lives, rationalising the estate and infrastructure etc. Then it would be clearer what additional funding would be needed. As is every area is so starved of staff and facilities are crap so any money thrown their way gets swallowed up without much thought.

‘Set the OP straight’ who do you think you are?

More fool you all if you think I’ve developed my political leanings from a supermarket trip on holiday.

There is absolutely no need to elaborate, I believe that ‘Brexit loving lunatics’ is the perfect summary.

But you have created a post dedicated to it? Plus you have been pulled down several times on your claims. You just wanted to start an anti Brexit post and had no clue where to start.

Your post is probably one if the most equal I have ever read regarding Brexit. Even remainers don't quite get your point.

It would be difficult to argue with any of that.

The inordinate (or engineered?) delay in checks by Britain of EU imports under the Withdrawal Agreement could very soon lead to sanctions by the WTO under "favoured nations" clauses. That could cause some issues.

Watch this space.....

We still have some of the cheapest food in the western countries.

The difference is our housing is so expensive that we find covering other bills like food difficult.

Most European countries spend more % of salary on food that we do, but less on accommodation.

Sideorderofchips · 13/08/2023 20:46

I live in Jersey and just finished a weeks holiday at my parents in the UK.

Your supermarket prices are cheap. Really really cheap. We haven't been shocked by how cheap it is compared to back home. The amount of fruit and veg you can get for a £1 and under at the supermarkets and tinned stuff!

Daisychainsandglitter · 13/08/2023 20:51

I agree. I've just come back from Belgium and was so interesting to see a thriving city centre. No sign at all of the decline of the high streets that we have here.
Food in the super markets looked so fresh and lovely.
Made me think how much the UK is on a general decline.

ladeluge · 13/08/2023 20:59

Brexit Britain is the same as Albania from an EU perspective. That's a weird thought isn't it? Apart from a few concessions like holiday health insurance cards.

Sadly this is what people voted for, not just with Brexit but with 13 years of Tory rule

Yep. Twats.

Load of old bollocks, anti Brexit post

Anyone who is pro Brexit is always unable to explain the positives.

I'm not pro Brexit but surely OP can do better than that, 5 supermarket shops, then 14 people.

User13986509 · 13/08/2023 21:51

And the NHS...

Thing is, comparisons like this are almost always meaningless because you were on holiday. If you were planning to relocate then you'd have an argument to make r.e finding similar style jobs/careers with a similar salary and subsequently earning potential based on your qualifications and the job market over there, childcare costs, healthcare costs, location, travel and so forth. Comparing your quality of life in the UK (based on many factors), albeit relatively, to week stay in the Balearic Islands isn't a fair comparison Confused

^^ Agree with this and the other similar comment.

There's been a much the same discussion elsewhere specifically with regard to the CoL in France vs. the UK.

You simply can't look at, say, fuel prices and prices in supermarkets in a country and draw any conclusions about overall CoL verses the UK.

Yes, the locals may be paying more/less for certain items but OTOH may be paying more/less in other areas of life (e.g. housing costs, tax, education, transport) and/or may have in work benefits that have no equivalent in the UK.

It's very hard to pretty much impossible to do a genuine comparison across the board based on a short visit.

DojaPhat · 12/08/2023 12:24

I don't think we are. This is what people voted for. I'd go so far as to say the current state of affairs has brought joy to many even if they aren't very vocal about it.

What hits, exactly?

checkedcloth · 14/08/2023 21:21

@User13986509 sorry for the late reply, been busy - full on day at work. Challenging day post industrial action and preparing for Trust Board next week. Something tells me you are questioning my honesty?

Not sure why you are unbelieving of the 14 people, 5 supermarkets…what’s so strange about that?
