We are being totally taken for a ride in the UK

Just had a week in on a Balearic Island
Did 5 supermarket shops.
shelves fully stocked, brilliant choice of food and produce and significantly cheaper than here.
we are being absolutely screwed over by this government, and all the other wealthy robbing companies.

I know some Brexit loving lunatics will be along soon to suggest otherwise….

Yes, Tory mismanagement and a general decline in the western world aren’t mutually exclusive.

CloudyMcCloud · 12/08/2023 12:57

Tbf no shortage of food here. Sometimes I think about how much food waste there likely is though

DarkForces · 12/08/2023 12:58

In the last few years we decided to leave the best trading deal we had and shut down our economy. We've made it as hard and unwelcoming as possible so people don't want to work here. It's a bit like the Welsh Government doing everything possible to make it unwelcoming to come here and being surprised tourism is down.

I suspect the long term consequences of shutting children in with abusers and abandoning them will be longer felt than even Brexit. Yet people here screamed for it and were complicit in this.

Consequences eh 🤷‍♀️

Sometimeswinning · 12/08/2023 13:00

So no one can say what this massive food shortage is. There have been a few comments to disagree with the point you're making. What is the point of this post? 🤔

We’re not being taken for a ride. We got what we voted for. Well, what some of the population voted for, I certainly didn’t.

I dont think it what the people wanted. In a country of 67 million, 17 tossers chose this outcome for us.

CapEBarra · 12/08/2023 13:00

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 12/08/2023 12:42

I voted out and this isn't what I voted out for. I believed that Bexit would mean better border controls, better support for British farmers and industry, better wages for lower paid workers and more money into schools and hospitals. I have to say though I was really on the fence. I also voted Tory as I the Corbyn Abbott government didn't exactly fill me with confidence.

😂😂😂

17 million that is

RudsyFarmer · 12/08/2023 13:01

But on the plus side, low risk of wildfires 👏

CapEBarra · 12/08/2023 13:03

It’s more expensive than it used to be in NI, but the shelves are full and the fresh fruit and veg doesn't go off after 2 days. On the other hand, imminent resurgence of the UVF, so swings and roundabouts.

Prescottdanni123 · 12/08/2023 13:04

Prices have gone up food wise, but since the ridiculous covid induced panic buying has stopped, I've never had a problem with the quantity or range of items.

Food prices have gone up in loads of places. I have friends who live abroad who consider UK food prices to be cheap compared to their supermarkets.

TeenLifeMum · 12/08/2023 13:07

My brother lives in Canada and still can’t believe how cheap uk food is - £7 for a small cauliflower anyone?

I agree with this

fullbloom87 · 12/08/2023 13:12

I can't say I've noticed any food shortage in the uk apart from at the beginning of lockdown then a little bit after as a backlog to factories closing.

What uk shops do you go in?
If you look at the vegetable labels they're all uk eu, and worldwide imported and full to the brim in stock. So no Idea why you think we have shortage?

elgreco · 12/08/2023 13:17

Try Dublin, still in the EU. Food shopping costs have soared in the last year.

cocksstrideintheevening · 12/08/2023 13:18

I'm in Ibiza atm. Shocked by how (relatively) cheap eating out is, haven't done an actual supermarket shop but picked up a few things and thought that's cheap.

Not sunscreen though, that's seriously €€€€€ most expensive I've seen was €35 for a standard bottle of Nivea f20.

We were here last year and it was more expensive than this year.

DewinDwl · 12/08/2023 13:22

Just looked this up:

Average wages in Spain are 29k euros a year. That's more than twice what was quoted upthread.

Inflation is 1.6%. Yes that's one point 6.

Hope this provides some context for the discussion.

rookiemere · 12/08/2023 13:22

I found food in Italy expensive when we were away , but the quality was generally higher than here. Same in France or Canaries.

I was and am totally anti Brexit, but there's a lot of other external factors causing the current high food prices.

Riapia · 12/08/2023 13:29

Are the wonderful Balearics still in the EU.
The same EU that people are desperate to escape from.

Zipps · 12/08/2023 13:34

Next year go to Norway, Denmark , Sweden or Iceland, it will give you a different perspective.
There is enough food to go around but there is far too much food waste, snacking on junk food and obesity here.
It's nice that you are able to afford holidays abroad and moaning though. Plenty can't.

TheThingIsYeah · 12/08/2023 13:46

ConstitutionHill · 12/08/2023 12:52

Local food and wine in Spain is 25% cheaper I would say. Same with fuel. Sure, local wages are a lot lower though. This is offset by rents and property prices being a great deal lower than UK.

When you say fuel do you mean petrol? I was in Spain 2 weeks ago and unleaded was €1.90 a litre so a bit more expensive than UK.

I was in Rhodes last year and it was €2.20+. Once you factor in the Greek average wage it amazes me how they afford it. But hey, it's the EU so everything's dandy, right?

SerendipityJane · 12/08/2023 14:23

TeleTropes · 12/08/2023 12:52

I’m exactly the same, but good luck getting a nuanced discussion around this as saying it out loud makes you public scum of the earth I’ve found…

What nuanced discussion are you looking for, pray tell.

You got what you wanted 3 times. Leave won, a Tory government devoted to Brexit, followed by another Tory government devoted to Brexit.

That's 3 lemons on the fruit machine of life.

What more did you want FFS ?

AllGrownUpp · 12/08/2023 14:40

I used to think this, I went to Sardinia about six years ago and things like coffees or an ice cream were €1, nothing in this country was this price at the time.
However during the last year or two I have really noticed the price of everything has really increased when I’ve been east (apart from Tunisia and Cambodia). America has the highest prices out of the countries I’ve been to during the last 18 months or so.
I go on lots of tours in all the different countries I visit and I hear the same story over and over again, fuel, food, pretol, etc price increase and every country thing they have it worse than everyone else.

Jesus and I thought it was expensive here at £1 !

The NFU advised farmers that their interests would best be served by remaining in the EU. All the farmers I know voted remain.

5 supermarket shops in a week - impressive.

Ive never seen shelves being anything other than fully stocked, even when the papers here said otherwise and thats me being completely honest.( apart from one or two occasions when my local shop was low on tomatos. - the great toilet roll famine on 2019/2020 excluded!

UK food costs are about 7% below EU averages so it sounds like you found a real unicorn of a supermaket, congratulations!
These price comparisons below are from July this year.

But your final "Brexit loving lunatics" make you sound quite immature and bitter im afriad, you really let yourself down with that.
