We are being totally taken for a ride in the UK

Just had a week in on a Balearic Island
Did 5 supermarket shops.
shelves fully stocked, brilliant choice of food and produce and significantly cheaper than here.
we are being absolutely screwed over by this government, and all the other wealthy robbing companies.

I know some Brexit loving lunatics will be along soon to suggest otherwise….

We got what we voted for.it was a choice between Boris and the Britain hating Corbyn. Did any of you ever actually read Corbyns manifesto for the 2019 GE?

What parts of the manifesto did you have an issue with? What makes you think Corbyn hates Britain?

MegaManic · 12/08/2023 20:37

Wasteddays · 12/08/2023 18:26

@MegaManic So much more expensive, were you in the Algarve? Lisbon?

Like 1.5 to 2 times the price. I was mostly buying crisps, chocolate, drinks, water so not high quality food but I did notice the meat, fruit and veg were quite expensive too. I was in the Algarve. They didn't seem like high end supermarkets that would be particularly expensive.
Although they did have watermelons that were twice the size of my head that I probably could have lived off for a week!

dramoy · 12/08/2023 20:38

What I don't get is why fruit and veg was expensive in Spain when you grow the stuff, tomatoes especially! I was in a Mercadona on the Spanish mainland in the spring and the price of melons, I can't remember exactly but I was like WTF?!?!

perhaps everyone involved gets paid better wages?

TLDRfuckers · 12/08/2023 20:46

“Brexit loving lunatics”

Do elaborate.

Justanotherlurker · 12/08/2023 20:48

It is threads like this that really highlight how MN has been wrong on every political position for over a decade (the next GE doesn't count because of course Labour are going to get in), going on a holiday for 2 weeks to compare supermarkets...

No looking at Spains unemployment rate, or ignoring the empty shelves situation they went through after covid, or the fact that yes there inflation is not as high as the UK (which negates a lot of brexit talk) when it is impacted on a lower cost of living generally still has the same compound effect because there wages are generally lower...

MN yet again trying proving itself to be politically astute...

Blossomtoes · 12/08/2023 20:52

Oh, sneer off somewhere else.

TheThingIsYeah · 12/08/2023 20:59

@Justanotherlurker The voice of reason.

Actually tbf this thread hasn't been too bad as lots of people have set the OP straight on the cost of groceries in the EU.

But another thread was bemoaning the end of FoM and how do parents feel about it etc - usual anti-Brexit dig - yet completely oblivious to youth unemployment rates in Spain and the like.

checkedcloth · 12/08/2023 21:25

‘Set the OP straight’ who do you think you are?

More fool you all if you think I’ve developed my political leanings from a supermarket trip on holiday.

There is absolutely no need to elaborate, I believe that ‘Brexit loving lunatics’ is the perfect summary.

Well you have been 'set straight' op 🤷‍♀️

I’m in Paris where staples are much more expensive than in the UK.

pavillion1 · 12/08/2023 21:34

mumda · 12/08/2023 12:38

You're on holiday for a week and visited 5 supermarkets?

gotta get them Lays from somewhere 🤣

TheThingIsYeah · 12/08/2023 22:38

@pavillion1 Paprika favour obvs. And don't forget the litre carton of Don Simon sangria!

God there's so much choice compared to the UK. And SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper too!

Thatladdo · 13/08/2023 01:41

Unfortunately the evidence suggests your post is just another salty, UK bashing Remoaner wingefest.
Im sorry you voted to remain and lost, but accepting you cant always have your own way is part of growing up.
Im glad you enjoyed you holiday in Ibiza though.
Have a great day 🙂

RugbyMom123 · 13/08/2023 01:54

Tbh not sure it is brexit as our euro mart type corner shop stores seem perfectly capable of getting a wide array of decent fresh fruit and veg, as does the local Indian wholesaler store. I am more inclined to thinks it’s the supermarket chains which are the issue.

HotPringles · 13/08/2023 08:49

Your Indian wholesaler is also probably used to get his products from out if the EU. That means a supplier chain established for that and quantities that are much much lower in volume than importing from the EU is.
So yes tgey supply line hasn’t been affected in that way. That’s normal if products weren’t coming from the EU!!

On the other side, the supply chain with the EU is so near collapsed that the government has postponed once again to introduce all the sanitary checks from the EU. There is so much paperwork involved that they KNOW introducing them - which is normal and what we were sold would happen - would mean little fresh food coming in.
Note too thst the situation is so tense that they’ve also waived sanitary check from Argentina which means we now have chicken coming in, full of salmonella but check when leaving Argentina and when arriving in the U.K. are now ‘not required’. And you won’t know about it because as soon as that meat is processed, it is labelled a U.K product.

User135644 · 13/08/2023 08:50

This country loves its Tories.

HotPringles · 13/08/2023 08:51

@Thatladdo about 70% of people now think brexit was a mistake. I dint think there is such a thing as Remoaners anymore. Just people who can see what’s going on and making their own evaluations. And their conclusion is that brexit has failed to delivered what was promised.

Pandaflop · 13/08/2023 08:54

I'm fortunate enough to travel quite frequently, even with price increases food here is absolutely cheaper than the majority of places. Also not seeing huge gaps or shortages, what items? Not to say there isn't a lot of shite going on here but not sure this is it.

Blossomtoes · 13/08/2023 09:41

It doesn’t help that nobody knew what it was supposed to deliver in the first place. Apart from £350 million a week for the NHS that hasn’t materialised.

Crikeyalmighty · 13/08/2023 10:17

@Thatladdo you might like to repeat that to my 83 year old FIL who voted to leave, now feels it was a pile of total bilge designed to make cash for certain people and has no advantages whatsoever- certainly not with this bunch in charge. He admits he was totally out of touch , had no idea how integrated many supply chains are and had no idea it would cost 400 billion to implement for little gain. You can call us remoaners all you like , which is extremely childish , but most of what was predicted has come to pass. We now have out of control 3rd world immigration to try and balance the numbers in areas short of staff , very little large scale investment due to the UK on its own not being a large enough market for international businesses and contrary to Rees Moggs protests of lower costs- it's absolutely the reverse. We have EU citizens perfectly able to come in using the E gates because they don't have the numbers to actually deal with it at airports , we have goods not being checked for exactly the same reasons- an absolute charter for smugglers. So you can be as smug as you like, Brexit voters won 'a pile of crap' - 'we hold all the cards' - don't make me laugh

rookiemere · 13/08/2023 11:02

I think Brexit was one of the worst political decisions to have ever been allowed to happen and I certainly didn't vote for it.

However to say it's a mistake because your shopping cost less in one country abroad on holiday is just ridiculous. As many have said it does not take into account wages, inflation and any other factors going on - I know everyone hates the Torys but can they be held responsible for the financial impacts of the Russian war with Ukraine ?

We have been lucky for a long time . Food prices in the UK were much cheaper comparatively to what they were when I grew up in 70s/80s. Inflation was artificially low.

Brexit is a hideous own goal omnishamble, but even without it a lot of the prevailing circumstances would have caused prices to rise.

checkedcloth · 13/08/2023 12:04

The idea that I base my views on Brexit on a trip to a supermarket is farcical.

I’ve worked in the NHS for 30 years, believe me my views of the Tories and Brexit come from a place of first hand experience.

The NHS (peace be upon it) got its extra £350m alright. Actually, more like £500m compared to 2016. It chomps its way through £150bn+ a year. It doesn’t need more money; it needs to be more efficient with it.
