40th birthday ideas

It's DH's 40th next year so I'm trying to be organised and plan ahead.

What did you do for your partner's special birthday? Or perhaps someone did something nice for you that you could share to give me some inspiration?

For my dh's 40th I booked to stay in Nora Battys house in Holmfirth and we took our best friends. We later went for a weekend in a fancy hotel. For my 40th we had a party in a function room.

@springtome sounds lovely! I like the idea of going away with friends but I don't think family will have the kids!

I booked a weekend in a European city and then put the word out to all of his friends and asked them to book their own flights. Quite a few of them were up for it and so we had a really good group of us in the end. It was a really good weekend. I also booked for just us two to go to Edinburgh Fringe which he'd always wanted to do. Was brilliant. All before having our daughter though, not sure I'd be able to do that now!

We have always been really lucky with plenty of family to have them over night. It's harder now they are teenagers as they need to go to separate people as 15 yr old ds doesn't want to sleep over with grandparents or younger female cousin.
