Just had a big, big Spider in the room. Im shaking and feel sick. Dp got it for me but i'm scared there will be more. Honestly it was massive! I'm in a real panic.

Anyone know how they get in? My windows were closed.

Ok Op - firstly, I really don’t like spiders so I get where you’re coming from. Anything I say after is not meant to dismiss your fear.

A pp has mentioned daddy long legs. This is weird to me as that’s what we used to call crane flies. I think the spider they mean are called cellar spiders. They are very thin and spindly. I have learned to appreciate them in my house - they tend to “stay in their lane” and do a great job of keeping insects at bay, plus they do take on and defeat house spiders.

Now, not to freak you out, but the spider you describe is likely a house spider. So-called because they live in your house year-round. They are more active now because it’s the time of year that they are looking for a mate. They haven’t found a way in, as such, they will always be within your walls etc. they just become more visible this time of year.

I have two in my living room, been visible the last fortnight or so. They are 5 floorboards apart and no progress made yet. I REALLY don’t like spiders, but they have stayed in their lane and not turned up where they shouldn’t be, so I’m giving them a pass so far. Have got to the stage where, when I walk past them, I’m muttering “ffs, cross the dance floor and asker her to dance you muppet!”

I noticed one as big as my hand above the tv tonight. My Dh put it outside. I know it won’t hurt me, but omg, it was huge!

As big as your hand? You're not in Britain I take it?

I am! Blinking massive. Hadn't noticed it watching a film then wondered what the black thing was, put my phone torch on it. Even my DH was a bit freaked. He still grabbed it (both hands) to put it outside. I keep telling him not to hurt them, they have to be put on the ground /bench, not chucked.

I absolutely LOVE spiders, the bigger and hairier the better. I think I might be weird.

I love spiders too 🕷

Buttercup2023 · 12/08/2023 06:00

Get a cat! We had loads of the giant house spiders before our cats, haven't seen a single on in the last 2 years, pretty sure they catch them and eat them 🤢 I do tend to let the cellar spiders live as someone has said above, they are no bother until the cobwebs start to build then they have to go too!

ThisIsAGoodName · 12/08/2023 08:02

We do have the skinny cellar spiders too. I was hopeful that they would help as I have seen them trap medium sized spiders before.

This one last night was like nothing I've seen before! It was really big. Like @Cherrysoup said, as big as an adults hand. That's not an exaggeration I promise you. Probably bigger than my hand when it was sprawled out.

Knowing they live in my walls all year round is a bit too much. I am being serious when I ask how they get in. I want to put spray down or something to stop them.

I have rarely seen such huge ones, maybe 4 in 23 years of living here. One of the dogs used to be very good at eating them if they scampered across the floor, this was above the TV in the kitchen. There are 2 skinnies in opposite corners of the kitchen too. I might employ the feather duster later.

And now another one! I don't know how I can cope

We had a MAHOOSIVE one here yesterday. All windows are frequently open so get a lot of spiders but this one!!

DH got it with a pint glass and rehomed outside - - except it’s legs were wider than one of those large traditional pint glasses!!

diamondinaruff · 13/08/2023 22:41

While not amazingly fond I try to talk to them ! Had one on stairs other night I called fatty and caught him in a glass.

They can't hurt you and I'm reluctant to kill them or anything that finds it's way in for that matter

In the last 6 months I have had two in bed with me 😂. Probably less harmful than my previous bed mates 😂

ThisIsAGoodName · 13/08/2023 22:47

@diamondinaruff I talk to the smaller ones. It's the only way I can get near them. I just can't handle the big ones.
I'm going up to bed and feel so anxious. How can I relax knowing these are around all the time!

I’m terrified of them too! We rarely get any these days though since my friend gave me a good tip. I just fill a small spray bottle with water and about 20 drops of peppermint oil. I spray the window and door frames every couple of weeks and we rarely get them now. I give the corners of our rooms a little spray too and it works really well.

Summerwashout · 13/08/2023 23:05

@ThisIsAGoodName

I always find they come in twos so if you managed to get them both hopefully that's it now..
Unfortunately I don't think I could use a spider catcher if people are talking about those ones like white spindles?

I don't know if it will help but I've put peppermint oil around window and doors. Also if you do get an actual "infestation" like false widows you can get a natural substance like ash called dianthus earth which kills them.

I'm terrified of them and dh takes them outside well into the garden but one year we did have an infestation of false widows and I did my research and decided with small dc it sad safer to try and reduce their no. Thereby reducing the chances they would accidently get into our beds and clothes.

This is very true

True and not true. I have a few cellar spiders living in my bedroom. I was delighted a while back when one of them big hairy fuckers got caught in its web and the cellar spider killed it. However I have had 2 big spiders in my room the last few weeks. I'm petrified off them too and ashamed to say I have killed them.

I wa like you 2 years ago.

I now have spiders as pets and pick up garden spiders as I think they're cute.

Decades of fear over such small things.

I used to be very scared of spiders until ds kept tarantulas. After that house spiders seem like nothing.I think if them as beautiful and fragile creatures
