Bikini line hair removal

Fink · 11/08/2023 14:49

DD (early teen) wants to get rid of the pubic hair around her bikini line before our upcoming holiday. NOT a Brazilian or Hollywood, just around the knicker line. She has her legs and underarms waxed but is too embarrassed about someone else seeing her bikini area, even with keeping underwear on.

I have no experience of DIY hair removal. Can anyone advise on home wax strips, hair removal cream, or other options, please? Suitability for a teen (I could do the job if necessary), level of pain, and particularly effectiveness. Not shaving, something longer lasting.

Grateful for any help. Thanks.

Oh, and also - ease of use. I don't want something that has to be really precisely applied to the milimeter or risk losing your genitals 😅

Veet hot wax. Great stuff. Not wax strips, they rip the skin off

Kernsworld · 11/08/2023 14:53

Epilator. A good one.

Veet's the only thing I can think of but I would make sure she doesn't get it anywhere near her privates. I shave, but you do have to do it quite often. I guess she could wax but I think that would probably be quite painful?

Honestly a home wax is a lot of effort and you don't get it very smooth unless you're a trained professional. I have on occasion given myself a bikini wax, and all it does is thins it out a bit. The hair is too course. You can of course repeat waxing, but it hurts a LOT more each subsequent time because the skin is tender.

Either have a professional (not a trainee - been there, won't do that again) wax it, or don't use wax. At least if you expect it to look good.

UnravellingTheWorld · 11/08/2023 15:09

Also for home waxes, do not skip the baby oil. She will somehow bruise, and cleanup is a nightmare.

NerdyBird · 11/08/2023 15:16

Woo woo hair removal cream. You can use it everywhere so it won't do any damage if application is less than precise.

Mykittensmittens · 11/08/2023 15:16

My DD had a wax before holiday about 3 weeks ago. It was discussed and procrastinated about for the same reasons as your DD.

in the end I messaged the beautician beforehand (been going myself for ages). She advised for DD to come wearing a pair of bikini pants which would show the area she wanted removing. She then did ‘just sides’ and I have to say it took about 2 minutes flat! DD held the pants where she felt it was best. She said she would do it again. She’s a very anxious girl normally, and not particularly into treatments or products, but she opted to go for it. She’s 14.

Maybe that helps?

Omg no! So painful even on my legs let alone that area!

Epilating doesn’t hurt. And it last longer than hair removal cream, is easier than home wax strips and doesn’t leave you with razor burns.
The girl already gets waxed on her legs etc. She’ll be fine with an epilator.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/08/2023 18:27

Good old Immac, or similar. That’s what I’ve always used.

Diorinthecountryy · 11/08/2023 18:42

I would recommend the Lady shave that has the special bit for shaving the bikini line area.

fandjango · 11/08/2023 18:48

Woo Woo cream. Takes about five mins and doesn't itch or burn or anything it's great

DragonDoor · 11/08/2023 18:48

Diy waxing can go horribly wrong as a first timer, and epilating is painful.

Hair removal cream would be the best option. She should read the instructions carefully, trim first and go cautiously with the cream. Rinse and rinse so there is no residue left.

xyz111 · 11/08/2023 18:50

Please don't home wax. I purchased a kit, sold it after one use. I had so many bruises 😬

Lies 😆

It’s only after epilating in the same area over and over again does the pain decrease.

Maybe you have a higher pain tolerance than most

Fink · 11/08/2023 19:14

Thanks all, some very useful tips. I think if we had to do it, it sounds like cream would be the best option.

But it turns out that she heeded my advice about professional waxing being the best choice, and when she came out of the waxing room lo and behold she had taken the plunge. And she said it didn't even hurt too badly, and she wasn't at all traumatised. I think she had built it up in her mind and was pleasantly surprised that it was actually ok.

Glad it went okay.

If she has lighter skin and dark hair the home laser gadgets work brilliantly. There needs to a contrast between skin and hair colour. I wish to god they had been around when I was younger!

Prices are coming down, maybe a future birthday present (although probably not to be opened in front of the assembled masses!)?

EarringsandLipstick · 11/08/2023 19:23

Epilating doesn’t hurt.

Oh God it does. I mean, it's fine & I did it for quite a long time but I find waxing relatively painless & epilation far worse.

RunningFromInsanity · 11/08/2023 19:26

Waxing the bikini line area doesn’t hurt anymore than legs or armpits.
It’s when you go Brazilian or Hollywood that it can get more painful.

I keep seeing those on Facebook and they just looked like it must be fake. Can you recommend one?

A few weeks later and she's still ok with the idea of going back for a bikini wax. She won't contemplate getting her eyebrows threaded again though, that was just too painful!

I used to epilate, and I found it both more painful than waxing and worse results. A lot more ingrown hairs and a lot more skin reaction. I would go around for 2-3 days covered in lumpy red spots. Maybe the epilators have got better since then!

CuriousPorg · 28/08/2023 20:20

What kind of hair does she have? I have course thick hair that grows very quickly (PCOS) so shaving leaves rashes and it grows back by the end of the day, epilating is horrendously painful and leaves red marks at every follicle and doesn't last more than 4 days hair free, by which point the red marks haven't even gone, same with waxing. I now laser it regularly at home.

I have a Hollywood wax and I still think eyebrow threading is more painful!

Honestly! This thread is nearly 18 months old. She’s probably removed, grown back and removed again several times by now.
