What would go with this sofa?

I've bought my first home and I'm moving in a couple of weeks. Found this sofa for sale, ex-display at knock down price; it's EXACTLY the sofa I wanted but not the colour. I love whites, creams and pastels, natural materials. I find teal/greeny-blue can look quite tacky.

However I bought it in the end because there's no way I can afford it at full price in the colour I want.

I now need to design my living room around this sofa. I'd appreciate any ideas for wall colour, cushion & rug colours, and anything else that you think would really complement it. It's a flat built in the 1960s, fairly boxy and characterless with large horizontal windows. Many thanks in advance.

I'd go for a mixture of light cushions, white or cream backgrounds with prints/, texture on. The odd pastel too. That colour is pretty classic and goes with anything. It's a classic design too, I like it!!
Just keep things like other jewel colours to a minimum going from the colours you've mentioned you favour.

It'll really get some character and warmth into a 60's flat.

I'd keep any furniture lighter too.

I've used the same colour as your sofa in my cushions in the living room. The sofas are a slate grey/blue, curtains dark cream, carpet cream and some lighter cushions too. It's very calming.

Clay pink wall and lots of cream cushions etc.

Thanks all. That's really helpful and I feel a lot better about it now. It's given me a few ideas.

That's a gorgeous sofa and a beautiful colour. I don't like it with the beige cushions though. I think another bright jewel colour for accents could look nice. A bright pink maybe?

Do you have Pinterest? I put in “white room blue sofa” and got lots of pictures with a neutral/natural look but a blue sofa. Here’s some examples

Thanks, I've had a look on Pinterest. It's a bit of an odd colour though so hard to find exactly the same tone. It's not normal teal, and a bit too green to be fully blue/navy.
I am in two minds about whether to go on full on maximalist and drama llama, or whether to keep it pared right down so the sofa is the main feature. I am thinking more the latter as I don't think I have the skill to pull off a maximalist look well and it's not really my thing anyway. I want calm, earthy, bookish, eclectic.

Lots of suggestions for pink as I guess that is a contrasting colour? I'll look into this. Would definitely prefer an earthy clay pink and will avoid barbie pink as that's not my thing at all.

Ooh that's the one I want!

You could do cream and grey or greige cushions, or you could do terracotta or pale pink.

minipie · 10/08/2023 20:35

Agree you don’t sound like a maximalist! I don’t think you have to find images with the same colour exactly, just get the general idea of a look. A slightly boho feeling scheme - off white walls but lots of pictures, books, plants, wood furniture, objects from your travels Grin - could work.

@minipie I think the style you shared is definitely more my thing. I want it to look quite natural and classy. I would have chosen a natural organic linen type sofa if I could have afforded it. This is a bit too peacock for me, with the velvet and everything, but those pics above have given me some good ideas.
