I read so many positive reviews recommending the Fire for kids because of the parental controls and cost effectiveness.
The reality is that the Fire enables access to tens of thousands of kids apps, many of which are inane and addictive games, of which I have no way of limiting unless I block them individually, one by one. Alternatively I can turn off the WiFi so he only has access to apps I have downloaded, but then I can't turn it off remotely, which works much better when transitioning him off than taking it away from him.
I'm finding it really frustrating because my kid has SEN, and uses screens to help regulate. My intent was to give him a device with a handful of educational apps and give him access to Bluey (which he's taken a lot from language-wise) and similar.
We do have an old iPad where we had more control over the apps, but it's close to the end of its lifetime, and we got the Fire to replace it. And the Fire doesn't support YouTube Kids or apps like LingoKids.
Looking for other users of the Fire. What am I missing? Should I just give up and get a refurbished iPad?
