I finally managed to complete on a very drawn out house purchase yesterday. Out of rental into my own home. Fab I am so happy about that.
However, I completed at 10 and the woman was still packing up at 1.
However, the house was a nasty, dirty mess when we arrived.
Previous owners had three dogs apparently and don’t we know it.
The fridge and freezer had old bits of food in- not cleaned.
Dog hair in fridge and freezer- dog hair everywhere and it’s set off an allergic reaction in my kids who are not even allergic to dogs normally.
Surfaces- not cleaned-
floors- not cleaned.
Dog shit left all over front and back garden
rubbish left in bins.
Curtain pole in main bedroom ripped out- it was supposed to be left- so the light from the street is waking me up. I would staple up blankets but I don’t know where the staple gun is.
I can’t find anything and can’t remember which carefully packed boxes anything is in.
it will get sorted eventually -but I can’t put anything in place until I have done a deep clean everywhere.
some people are really skanky.
Make me feel better with your house moving stories please .

This sounds familiar.... we completed at midday on the house we live in now, it was a drive away so we arrived at 4pm. At EIGHT PM they were still packing and our van still couldn't unload. They left SO MUCH behind - including a cat they couldn't catch. The cat was stressed (poor cat) and had peed everywhere. They had four cats, a dog and chinchillas and, yup, hair EVERYWHERE. They'd also been smoking inside while packing and left full ashtrays everywhere. It actually looked like they hadn't cleaned since they'd accepted our offer.

The house is really nice now (after a deep clean, renovation and redecoration.) Congratulations on yours and good luck!

How awful I’m sorry. But just remember every single thing you do from now on makes things get just a bit better keep on plodding and it’s surprising how quickly you will get straight in spite of the horrible mess you have been left.

@Puffykins what happened to the cat??

Puffykins · 10/08/2023 05:39

@BingoBastards we had it for a month before we managed to catch it and get it to its owners. It was semi-feral and hung out in the garden with the foxes, but if we left any window/ door open it would streak into the house - and pee everywhere. It was a bit of a nightmare actually. I thought we'd have it forever.

It's been over two years now and the preview owners still haven't redirected their post. They come and get it once a month..... (and comment, negatively, on changes we've made. Like replacing the 'windows' with windows that function as such instead of taped up board, and repainting the front door. Which is as far as I'll let them come.)

We had one seller that took the cupboards off the wall and another that hadn't emptied a barn. They came back a month later after their Caribbean holiday. Another left furniture including sofas so we couldn't get ours in.
Our recent house move was a doddle compared to these. Ex rental so it had been professionally cleaned. Very grateful for that.

Thanks for the stories. What are people like? I spoke with my solicitor about the shot and less yesterday and she said there isn’t much you can do if they are in breach of contract. Well I can sue them , but she said it wasn’t worth it unless it was very expensive stuff.
she said the conveyancing system in England isn’t fit for purpose.
mind you might seller has been crappy all along so I am not surprised this has happened.
I left my rental spotless.
It’s all cosmetic really, I know and I am so glad to finally have my own house- a thing not attainable for many.
I managed to locate the kettle and tea bags but no spoons. I did find a pen.
feel like bleaching the whole house.

Our house was dirty too, a visible layer of dust on carpets where they'd obviously moved furniture and not run the hoover over the carpet and dirty cupboards that all it would have taken was a damp cloth to but 6 weeks in and it's feeling like home and a distant memory.

What isn't a distant memory is all the walls where I kid you not they have painted round pictures on the wall and then taken the pictures off, who does that! Never mind, it's a funny story to tell people and we love our new house regardless
