Can anyone help re DBS check please?

DS needs an enhanced (I think) DBS for PGCE course he’s starting in September. Can anyone advise whether the id document which he provides as proof of address needs to be something addressed to him at his student rental house in uni city or can it be to his home address (many miles away but still UK). Having a problem if the former as he has literally just moved in and would have to change address with bank and, therefore, not get a statement til end of month. The course provider is saying he needs to use something with his term-time address but the Get Into Teaching helpline advised he should definitely use home address which he uses for student finance etc. Any help appreciated!! Thanks.

I would use his permanent address as current and list his temp address concurrently. It is for id checks and they need a history to check against.

WhatHaveIFound · 09/08/2023 23:02

DD uses her home address for her DBS and this is accepted by the school she volunteers at in her university city.

Lilylicaclavendar · 09/08/2023 23:09

Thanks both … but how on earth do we convince the course provider that the home address is the one to use? @LIZS they submit the check on his behalf, do you know whether he would still need something official addressed to him at rental if it is listed concurrently? I’ve asked him to email his mentor through Get Into Teaching and hopefully he will agree and maybe give him some wording to send back to them along with his id showing his home address. Am very conscious of time ticking by.

Council tax bill for student rental?

CornishTiger · 09/08/2023 23:14

And did you look at the guidance online. It’s all in there actually.

  • Students/travelling employees/medical staffif you are a student, frequently travel with your work or are employed as medical staff and live in accommodation you can have another permanent address which you think of as home. This address could be a family home or your parents house where you normally live when not away, for example during an academic year

@CornishTiger , thank you. I did read that earlier this evening but unfortunately the course provider is saying they won't accept home address. No council tax bill - think that's included in rent and presumably paid by landlord (shared house and only been there 2 days!). Might actually suggested he copies that para in an email to the lady he's dealing with. Thanks!

Yes the guidance is there to be followed not for providers to make up their own rules!

Lilylicaclavendar · 10/08/2023 00:09

Actually @CornishTiger, apologies I was looking at a different page earlier, not that particular one.

The issue isn't actually his addresses, that bit's okay, he will list them all. It's the ID required. Photo ID is fine, birth cert ticks a second box but the third ID is proof of address. This is what we're trying to get a definitive answer on ... can he submit a listed piece of ID that shows his home address, not the rental address? Does that make sense?

Lol I love your last answer 🙂

I am a uni student with a term time address, I recently had to get another dbs for a job and they wouldn't accept my old home address as they needed proof of address to be the address local to the job in the uni town.
I just changed the address on my banking app, which took 2 minutes and then called and asked for a new statement to come to my new address, it arrived three days later.

They did accept licence and paddport which are registered to my old home address though so I am not sure if there are set rules.

Lilylicaclavendar · 10/08/2023 00:27

@Slicedpeaches thanks that's really useful and what I have spent an hr on the phone yesterday afternoon trying to do but one bank won't run statement till month end and the other is a new account and he doesn't have an e-banking log on yet. He's coming home at weekend so might send him into branch and see whether they will sort it. Thanks!

I am surprised they would discuss his account with you under data protection rules and the fact he is a grown up starting a teaching course.

Al991 · 10/08/2023 06:35

The bank are behaving very strangely! It should be simple to change address and have a statement issued straight away. At my bank you don’t even need to talk to them, you can do it online. I think you should revisit this.

No they shouldn't. You only need 3 pieces of id iirc, one photographic and two with address. They may start the process but usually he will be sent a link to add addresses and confirm other details.

LIZS · 10/08/2023 07:43

Student don't pay council tax but there may be correspondence confirming exemption.

LIZS · 10/08/2023 07:47

Has he had any correspondence with hmrc, nhs or student loans company? Payslip from pt work? I think this has to be within past 3 months. Online banking causes issues with statements but he may have had an interest rate change letter or similar.

FitAt50 · 10/08/2023 07:52

I work on recruitment and run background checks weekly. He can go to his bank and ask them to print out a statement. He can then ask the bank to stamp it to prove it's an official document. I have candidates do this all the time and it's always accepted.

@Justgonefishing @Stomacharmeleon It’s a joint account that he and I hold so it was fine for them discuss.

@LIZS, thanks again … student loans might be a possibility.

Thanks all - am sure we will get it sorted, at least am armed with more suggestions for him now.
