And I'm nervous traveling anyway but I'm feeling sick at the thought of getting caught up in this with the children.. Especially on the tube.

from looking at news I think it's bad now, but under reported because they don't want to encourage people to join in.

tbh unless you have to go for some pressing reason, I wouldn't.

WestOfWestminster · 09/08/2023 19:51

What happened?

Ilikewinter · 09/08/2023 19:57

A mob group of kids gathered to rob JD Sports on Oxford street at a set time - it was advertised on TikTok...... from what I understand anyway!.

@EmmaEmerald.. I won't be on Oxford Street we are going to the theatre around Covent Garden but I'm worried about tubes and being in that area

This is the most "reliable" source on Twitter, there are other clips that I totally believe. It's been a place to avoid for a long time.

Cross post

hopefully at Covent Garden you should be okay. Can you avoid the Central Line?

TheFlis12345 · 09/08/2023 20:02

I was on Oxford Street at various points this afternoon (it’s right by my office( and have no idea what you’re talking about.

SquirmOfEels · 09/08/2023 20:08

Police were aware, put in place a number of dispersal orders

5 arrests

Oxford Street: Five arrested after Met dispersal orders - BBC News

Yes, a bit of a PITA if you were right be the area where the police acted, or if you wanted to get in to one of the shops that temporarily closed.

But I think this is a busted flush now and I wouldn't change plans

Smallinthesmoke · 09/08/2023 20:11

I literally walked through Oxford Circus tube 20 mins ago. Completely normal except an increased police presence.
London is a big place. You'll be fine. Enjoy the theatre.

Legoroses · 09/08/2023 20:11

There's no way this will affect your journey tomorrow and will have zero impact on the tube, including the central line. Even if thousands of people turn up, that's a fraction of normal tube passenger volume.

Fedupwitheveryone · 09/08/2023 20:12

OP You will be absolutely fine. If walking in central london with kids I would always recommend staying off the main roads and taking back streets anyway as it is so much quieter.
Avoid rush hour tube stations and trains for the same reason - pre 09:30 am and 5-7pm

DrasticAction · 09/08/2023 20:22

Thank you. I get claustrophobic on tubes anyway... I would massively struggle if badly behaved large no of teens got on ranting trouble.

As pp said hopefully now it's a "busted flush"

that's good to hear.

QuietDragon · 09/08/2023 20:26

I passed through Oxford Circus an hour ago and wondered why there were lots of police stopping teens.

It's fine OP.

BlackberrySky · 09/08/2023 20:30

The metropolitan police are very used to dealing with crap like this, you will be fine. Also, don't forget that the tube stops every couple of minutes so if for any reason you feel uncomfortable, get off and wait on the platform for the next one.

Get an uber for you all.

AuntieDolly · 09/08/2023 20:56

Or the bus?

CathyorClaire · 09/08/2023 21:09

Oxford St is exceedingly wide and the police presence will have been concentrated on the side under any threat.

We've been when XR were staging protests and it's been fine.

I definitely wouldn't change plans for Covent Garden (far enough away) and theatre chucking out time.

DrasticAction · 09/08/2023 22:02

I don't suppose anyone knows what time this started, we should be heading home at 3.45

BasiliskStare · 10/08/2023 00:36

Plan your trip to Covent Garden so tube bus whatever , uber - I wouldn't go to Oxford st if it were the last place on earth.

MinnieTruck · 10/08/2023 00:38

Honestly you’re going to be fine
