We have a huge swarm of flying ants. Is it your flying ants day today and what do you do about yours?

We've lived in this house for decades and we've never noticed any ants or flying ants here before. Today we've got a huge swarm of flying ants in the garden. They are crawling all over a stone wall, down onto the lawn and flying thick in the air. The garden is unusable, especially with the DC. We are in the UK and rural. We're a very nature-friendly family usually but these are awful and they are everywhere!

They are meant to fly on the same day, depending on the weather and whether urban or rural. I find this rather spooky!

Have you got flying ants today and what, if anything, have you done about the beasties?

Here's some information:

Just watched them
They were crawling all over the patio, right outside open doors. Gradually, one by one, their wings appeared and they took off - all travelling in the same direction (South easterly) not one came in the house

daytriptovulcan · 09/08/2023 16:42

Couldnt you just leave them alone. They ll be finished in a day or 2 and arnt harmful, unless you stick your head in their nest.

Aethelthryth · 09/08/2023 16:44

One in my study (London N1) right now. Cat enjoying it very much

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/08/2023 16:51

Aahhh, Dd and l were staring horrified out of the window at a random swarm of ‘things’ on our patio. Then they all flew away.

Vallmo47 · 09/08/2023 16:52

We had them mid July in Bristol. 🙄

Delatron · 09/08/2023 16:53

To be fair none came in our house and I have sliding doors wide open. So left them to it. Bit annoying they all came out today though.

TenoringBehind · 09/08/2023 16:57

We had them last week. They arrived all of a sudden in their thousands and did a huge amount of damage to a wooden window frame in a very short space of time.

Flying ants here in droves in Yorkshire.

HermioneWeasley · 09/08/2023 16:59

Also in Yorkshire and it’s their day today!

TenoringBehind · 09/08/2023 17:00

I sprayed fly spray liberally. I don’t normally kill insects but I couldn’t have them destroy my house!

Mellowautumnmists · 09/08/2023 17:00

Huge swarm here in Lancashire. I've had to close the windows as they're coming in which is a shame as it's a gloriously sunny day!

donutosaurus · 09/08/2023 17:03

We're in Surrey and definitely have them today. We also had them about a month ago too. Not as many today but definitely some. We're near Kingston U Thames.

LibertyLily · 09/08/2023 17:10

We have them today in rural S W Wales. It's humid but not particularly sunny where we are. DH got covered in them whilst working on an outbuilding roof.

BingandSulaandFlop · 09/08/2023 17:12

I'd never heard of this until the day we moved into our house. There we were sitting in the garden congratulating ourselves on finally getting on the property ladder, and next thing we know we were swarmed by hundreds of flying ants and had to go inside. I had no idea this only happened once a year and remember wondering what sort of hell hole we'd bought!

But in answer to your question, yes it seems to be today!

Neverknowinglysensible · 09/08/2023 17:16

North Wales coast here. Haven’t had them yet, but by the sound of everyone’s experiences they must be due any time now . Will keep all the windows closed tomorrow, just in case. I hate them!

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 09/08/2023 17:19

Ours is today. It’s about a month late.
great day for birds.
ive schooed one large one out, they mostly manage to avoid the house though.
I’ll probably give the washing an extra shake when I bring it in

Oldraver · 09/08/2023 17:20

We live in West Oxfordshire and have just been gardening and yes there are flying ants

wheresmymojo · 09/08/2023 17:20

HopelesslyDevoted2u · 09/08/2023 16:14

Yes got them in my garden today too. I poured boiling water where they were flying out from and it seems to have stopped them

shit.
what a way to go

rainbug · 09/08/2023 17:22

Was flying ants day in our garden (Kent). We are in a village with a very nature friendly garden (mid terrace so not a huge garden but not tiny either) and garden was covered with them

Leopardchange · 09/08/2023 17:23

Haha. Yes we've had loads on our garden today. I thought it was just us!

SE13Mummy · 09/08/2023 17:23

We're in SE13(!) and the flying ants are out in force.

Papernotplastic · 09/08/2023 17:24

We’ll probably get them tomorrow. They come out from between the stones on the garden path and the blackbirds run around having a mad feeding frenzy.

No ants here in Surrey/London suburbs

I'm Surrey/London suburbs (of which there are a lot so perhaps we're far from each other) and swarming here today!

inamarina · 09/08/2023 17:27

Loads of them here today (East Anglia).
