Bridges of madison county. I liked the book, walked out of the film.

The Goldfinch. Amazing book, average , slightly dull film.

Me before you

JaneJeffer · 09/08/2023 22:59

WTF did you do that spoiler for?
Are you a time traveller from 2010?

BrandyandGinger · 09/08/2023 23:30

I like the film A Room with A View more than the book. It's absolutely perfect in every way. I don't like the last chapter of the book. I prefer The English Patient film to the book too.
I'm sorry for answering the question in the wrong direction, OP, but the book is generally better than the film.

BrandyandGinger · 09/08/2023 23:34

I've never actually read The Notebook but I've cried copiously through the film a few times so I'm guessing it's an exception to the rule also.

Ellmau · 09/08/2023 23:43

I read somewhere once that good books make bad films, and vice versa.

This is going to hurt by Adam Kay - A million, trillion times better!

Jurassic Park is a better film than the book!

Also the Handmaids Tale series

Most of them

Always

Brilliantefforts · 10/08/2023 12:19

What?? Pretty much every book is far superior to the film!

jemenfous37 · 17/12/2023 10:49

Every book ever made into a film, and every book to be made into a film in the future!

LinguisticallyCunning · 17/12/2023 11:06

Ds says Of Mice and Men and the How to Train Your Dragon series.

Mothership4two · 17/12/2023 15:26

Captain Corelli's Mandolin story was ruined in film

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/12/2023 15:32

Almost all of them.

Fortunately I read the reviews of The Time Traveller's Wife and Captain Corelli's Mandolin films before deciding whether to see them, and therefore never did!

The only thing where I liked the adaptation more than the books was Game of Thrones!

Mothership4two · 17/12/2023 15:40

Under the Skin was a very interesting novel that really made me think with lots of different themes, but mainly factory farming. The main character is a surgically altered female alien who is a bit of a misfit and constantly in pain from her surgery who hunts hitchhikers. In the completely different film she is the beautiful Scarlet Johansson who is a temptress alien. The factory farming theme is completely erased. The film is quite odd.

No @SleepingStandingUp
My holiday reading was the Agatha Raison series, all lightheated easy reading and the TV series portrays her as a completely different character, I just can't watch it
Gone is the middle aged women like Vera and a trendy blonde woman is in place, it gives it a totally different feel

But does that make it better or worse? And in what sense?

in my experience the book is always better - more detailed and nuanced and I can make my own picture of the places and characters so much so that I no longer watch a film if I’ve read, or plan to read, the book.

TooTender · 17/12/2023 16:01

The book is always better than the film unless it’s Lord of the Rings

Jurassic Park is a better film than the book!

Ooh yes agree about Jurassic park! I liked the book but the film is definitely superior

Britpopbaby · 17/12/2023 16:12

Starter for Ten. The book is so funny the film falls a little flat.
