We need to talk about Kevin was really really well done. I don't think it was better than the book but it was definitely on par, most of the time the film is rubbish in comparison.

I loved the film and to be honest I found the book quite a hard read and gave up, kept having to look up too many words 😅 to the point the reading didn't flow for me

Remains of the Day
The English Patient and
The Age of Innocence
Under the Skin
Are all BETTER than the books they are based on imo

Oh, I love the novel The Age of Innocence — what was it made you prefer the film? (which was very good, I agree, only I thought Winona Ryder was miscast..)

Gilead · 09/08/2023 13:55

I felt that ‘The Remains of the Day’ was beautifully done and almost as good as the book.

Jibberty · 09/08/2023 14:04

It's very rare that the film's better for me, and I think my only true exception is The Beach. The film was a near perfect example (to me) of how I saw everything in my mind as I read the book (which I read first). Close to that is probably Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - either film, for the same reason as above.

SgtPercyTwentyman · 09/08/2023 14:33

True Grit. And the Texas Ranger doesn't get killed in the book!

SgtPercyTwentyman · 09/08/2023 14:34

It's not a film, but Caroline Graham's Midsummer Murders books are way, way better than that godawful TV series.

Ihateboris · 09/08/2023 14:35

Girl with the dragon tattoo

Absolute Beginners. The film was just awful, an absolute travesty. I loved the book so much. Would have walked out (I've never walked out of a film) but I was with someone.

JulesJules · 09/08/2023 14:42

Oh and The Dark is Rising (from the Susan Cooper books) was dreadful, didn't even make sense

thesnailandthewhale · 09/08/2023 14:50

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Atreus · 09/08/2023 14:52

All of them, apart from The Shawshank Redemption.

FuckertyFuck · 09/08/2023 15:00

Just remembered another one The girl on the train, I hated the film completely different to how I pictured it

I’ve got one where the film is better - Jaws. Helps that the original has a cringy sub-plot where Chief Brody’s wife has an affair with Hooper. Shudder.

The Exorcist is another one. I'm not sure how an author can make a book about demonic possession boring, but he manages it.

TaigaSno · 09/08/2023 15:05

Not a film but a tv series. A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth, it's one of the most wonderful books ever written, a wonderful story, but also the author's style of writing is just so beautiful, it's perfect. The BBC adapted it into a series a few years ago and I wanted to cry at how awful it was!

Generally I find most books are better than their film versions but perhaps that's because I love books and reading them.

One exception stands out which is The Remains of the Day, the film is so perfectly done, I can watch it over and over.

StamppotAndGravy · 09/08/2023 15:18

TV Bridgerton is probably better than the book. They're both enjoyable dross though, so that doesn't say a lot!

UnderHisEyeOverMyDeadBody · 09/08/2023 15:21

Books are always better than the film.

Standout for me is Silence of The Lambs.

ArtfulPuss · 09/08/2023 15:32

I rather liked Atonement – after being prepared to hate it. I still remember how perfect Keira Knightley looked in that stunning green silk dress. The film of Remains of the Day perfectly captured the restraint of Ishiguro's prose as well, though it has been literally decades since I watched it so can't remember details. Also thought We Need to Talk about Kevin was a decent film version of the book. Not saying any of them better! Just always expect films of books to disappoint me, and these didn't. OTOH absolutely hated what they did to The Goldfinch – the actor playing the main character ruined it for me completely, and Nicole Kidman had no business in it either. (Though did love the casting for both young and old Boris.)

I loved the TV adaptations of The Miniaturist (think that was the first thing I ever saw Anya Taylor-Joy in, and I was mesmerised) and Big Little Lies. Think I did actually prefer the latter to the book.

ArtfulPuss · 09/08/2023 15:36

(Sorry – just reread OP and realised you want books that are better than the film, so I answered the opposite of the question!)

PermanentTemporary · 09/08/2023 15:41

I've never got over the 15 minutes of the Cazalet Chronicles on TV that I sat through. Terrible adaptation. Likewise the two most recent adaptations of The Pursuit of Love, both times the writers appeared not to have read the books. I don't see why you would do these things.

MargaretThursday · 09/08/2023 16:02

Dark is Rising and The Little White Horse (renamed as Secret of Moonacre, I think) were absolute slaughtering of books that are naturally very cinematic.

The movie of Carrie was much better than Stephen King's novel.
