Toothache any dentists 24hours?!

Up in agony with toothache.
Have tried every single thing and nothing works need to see a dentist ASAP.
Dentist doesn’t open until 9 so it’s got me thinking do you know of any dentists open 24hours?!
I would genuinely travel across country right now and give them my house to be out this agony 😭

Maybe not the whole house but at least half.
I can’t imagine a worse physical pain.

You can contact 111 for emergency out of hours dentist, no clue about the actual hours though.

However, I’ve heard the receptionist at our dentist say ‘toothache isn’t classed as urgent’. I wonder what is then?!
I hope you get some relief soon.

How can I access an NHS dentist in an emergency or out of hours?

If you have a regular NHS dentist and need urgent or out-of-hours treatment, contact your dentist for advice. If you do not have a regular NHS dentist, contact NHS 111.

Was also going to say call 111 if things are this bad, not sure if emergency dentist is 24/7 but they might at least be able to get you an urgent morning appt. I take it you’ve tried ibuprofen and hot water bottle etc meantime? I really feel for you, proper toothache is agony.

Have you tried taking Co-codamol & then 2 hours later take Ibuprofen? You could safely take 600mg Ibuprofen 4 times a day & 8 Co-codamol per day. Try & time meals about an hour after taking the Ibuprofen. Have you got any swelling? If you think you have an abcess you need to ring the dentist as soon as they open in the morning. Hot salt water rinses help, try & hold the water over the affected tooth. If you can't get to see a dentist & you think you have an abcess, you can order antibiotics online, I have done it when my dentist refused to fit me in, they came within 36 hours & the pain went within 48 hours.

Unfortunately it's just pain, nothing that will cause lasting damage if not treated now, not life threatening.

Pharmacies are open though. Co-codamol and orajel (great stuff) will get you through to the morning.

@Holidayoverdue you poor thing. Overwhelming toothache pain is the worst. Do you think you might have an abscess? Does holding water in your mouth relieve the pain a bit? (Generally a sign of an abscess) Do you have a clove oil in your medicine box? A little of that on a bit of cotton wool to bite on will help.

Holidayoverdue · 09/08/2023 03:17

Thank you for all kind messages.
It’s my real weakness tooth ache.

I’ve tried oral gel, clove oil, ice and hot wattle
bottle, paracetamol and Ibuprofen, salt water and sitting up rather than lying down other than the odd roll on the floor.

I’ve never heard of the holding water in mouth but on it now! Thank you.

my dentist opens at 9 however he is often sick or on holiday. I’ve shamelessly left them a message about an hour ago leaving my phone number hoping for an emergency appointment along with going to call them at 9- I’ve recently gone private so hopefully they will be able to give me an appointment.

I have found another dentist online that specialises in emergencies.

my face has swollen so guessing it’s an abscess or something on the nerve.

so grateful for everyone replying and making me feel less lonely right now. It’s 3:15 I’m usually in bed by 10 and not even tired yet due to the pain.

What a nightmare. I’ll be asking for him to extract if he can.

@Holidayoverdue don’t do what I did and swallow the water though. Spit it out or by the time you get to the dentist you’ll be in the loo every 5 mins 😂

You’ll most likely have to have a root canal. The dentist will remove the nerve to get to the abscess. Your tooth will die so you’ll perhaps need to consider cosmetic dentistry if it is in the front as it will take on a grey appearance. The relief you’ll feel after the tooth is drilled and the pressure relieved is like no other tho. The antibiotics will kill the bacteria but root canal removes the infection so you don’t get any other complications.

If holding water in the mouth relieves the pain, tell the dentist. It helps distinguish from ‘normal’ toothache from an abscess. Good luck!

Oh it's awful, isn't it. I've been there and would have given my arm for it to stop. Weirdly if I lay completely flat it didn't hurt as much.
I needed a root canal, which was absolutely fine, but before that a course of antibiotics.
Sadly, nothing helped until the antibiotics kicked in.
Thinking of you and hoping they see you asap.

Holidayoverdue · 09/08/2023 21:30

So grateful for replies in my hours of need.
got an emergency appointment this morning and put on antibiotics 🤞
thank you everyone for help and kind words x

Get well soon @Holidayoverdue!

mooncloud1 · 10/08/2023 10:34

@Holidayoverdue how are you doing?

Holidayoverdue · 10/08/2023 13:20

Soo much better thank you 😃 antibiotics kicked in a lot quicker than I expected.

Still a bit nervous as the dentist said it could happen anytime as I he couldn’t really put his finger on what was going on but hopeful.

Amazing how much it drains you isn’t it X

mooncloud1 · 10/08/2023 21:15

Ahh that's good. I was concerned the antibiotics may take a few days, they did with me and it was beyond miserable. Still 2 courses, a root canal, part of the tooth chipping off, a filling and £800 later, we'll all good 😁

Holidayoverdue · 10/08/2023 21:59

Well… something weird happened.
My dentist wasn’t sure what it was but thought probably a tooth that had been playing up not long ago.
issued antibiotics anyway and have just finished my second day..
HOWEVER a different tooth has been giving my shooting pains every so often.
When I was in agony I could only work out which side of my mouth and both are same side.
so scared about it being the weekend soon.
my dentist is now away for 3 weeks but I’ll ring the surgery and see if they will let another dentist double check or at least run something past him.
arghhhh… my stress levels go through the roof with tooth ache- terrifies me!

Just to note and it may not apply across the whole country, but 111 is pretty useless for dental problems, from experience with family member they basically say contact a dentist or go to a/e and a/ e won’t see dental problems they tell you to ring 111 or go to a dentist

Netaporter · 10/08/2023 23:05

@Holidayoverdue i hate to say this to you, but I had three root canals in 48hrs. It started with one, then after that treatment was started it seemed to set the tooth off either side, and because the dentist couldn’t identify or eliminate if one was actually under attack he had no choice (because of the pain level) but to do both. Tbf, after he had, all the pain subsided. Up until then I’d have given a limb to make it stop. If you are I any doubt, go back before it is the weekend. Good luck!
