Wedding guest dress help

I have a wedding in a few weeks, I had a dress I thought I might wear but I've been told it isn't really suitable and now I'm really struggling!

I'm a 14/16 36 years old. I don't like bright colours I am more grungy style which I appreciate isn't necessarily suitable for a wedding

I don't even know what shop to look on, so far I've looked at asos, new look, next, lipsy very and I just can't find anything 😫

I don't mind if it short or long but mid length doesn't suit me as I have big legs, I don't want it to be tight around my stomach but don't mind it being tight around my ribs

I probably want my arms covered but can get a jacket if needed so not essential to have sleeves.

I have attached a picture of the one I got which most people think is not suitable as an indicator of my style, please help!

well, are the couple also into grunge? in which case it may be suitable but otherwise it's a hard no from me.

I think you can wear this dress, just not with docs and fishnets, and cover up the chest a bit more. With some jewellery, nice shoes/sandles and a wrap or jacket in the colour of the print I think you'd be fine.

I've worn black to weddings a few times, I only seen people on mumsnet say it's not the done thing.

I think the dress would be fine as long as you wear lighter accessories. I won’t suggest anything bright. So what about champagne / nude - hatinator and shoes? Can you wear heels?

Alternatively, maybe you like Lindy Bop dresses or Vintage Laura Ashley on eBay. I’m not sure of the size on the LA dresses as they come up really small. You’ll be at least a 16, maybe an 18. Often the vendors give the physical measurements of the dress, which need to be a couple of inches bigger than you. A few sellers offer returns otherwise you need to be sure about what you’re buying. Search for both ‘dress’ and ‘gown’.
