Things you didn't know weren't normal

What are things you thought every one or every family did until you became an adult or entered a new relationship?

I'll start. I thought that everyone ate the leftover yorkshires after a roast dinner as desert eg: fill them with cream and fruit or custard or something, basically use them like you would a pancake... no?

I thought everyone peeled mushrooms, I didn't know that not only do people not peel mushrooms, lots don't even know they have peel!! 😱

I'll probably think of more.

Nb: I'm not meaning to trigger anyone's childhood or relationship trauma, I just mean lighthearted things x

That gravy is an essential part of a roast dinner, in fact it’s no a roast without gravy.
I was horrified the first time I met my in laws and they served a roast with something called bread sauce instead of gravy. 12 years later I still drop the odd hint but no gravy served in their house as yet…

2023issucky · 08/08/2023 20:41

We also used to use Yorkshire puddings with syrup as a pudding, me and dad used to sneak extras. We also peeled mushrooms.

I didn't realise that butter and sugar sandwiches weren't a thing for everyone. As an adult I realised somedays that's all we had in the cupboards, grew up struggling family.
And also that not everyone was given black bags of clothes to find things as we grew. Loved looking though and finding something, but as the 3rd girl, most went to older sisters

TweetyMcTweetFace · 08/08/2023 20:41

It isnt normal to have your own bonfire and fireworks display in your own garden every year. Complete with sausages and baked potatoes on the fire.

Sugar on coco pops is not a thing apparently. (I'd still eat this everyday if I could!)

Omg take your own gravy. That is horrifying.

Is this an Irish or German thing by chance? My Gran had a German mum and an Irish dad and she gave this to us kids all the time. Never met anyone else that was given it!

Scots - Irish.
We'd peel it, slice it up, add the milk and sugar. That was a regular pudding. My Ma was from Glasgow, Irish parents.

Culture shock

Beetroot on burgers (horrible)
Sausage rolls that contains watery frozen style vegetables ( kiwis do not understand decent sausage rolls)
’Bring a plate’ had to be explained that you also bring food on the plate to a social gathering 🤭
Beef/ Pork ‘flavoured’ sausages with painted on lines and made from … well we won’t go into that one - wouldn’t feed them to the dogs.

If you rent you don’t pay council tax
insurance not compulsory for vehicles and a LOT cheaper for fully comp
Being able to grow the majority of your vegetables year round
Neighbours talk to you, and are helpful. Strangers say hello on walks
Parking for free on the high street - spent ages looking for a pay and display the first time

And I didn’t know till very late that mushrooms should be peeled ( washed, always peeled, no).

"If you rent you don’t pay council tax" @SpanielsMatter

This is actually true in some parts of the UK, the LL is responsible.

So mine is mince and pancakes every Saturday. Would actually be interested if this is a thing, or just a thing for my family. Was mince fried with onions, tinned tomatoes and kidney beans (resolutely no spices) and served on a thick pancake.

I think this will turn out to be just your family.

natura · 08/08/2023 20:42

@isthismylifenow - not in the warming drawer underneath, IN the actual oven – sitting on the racks! Every time I wanted to cook something I had to take out a bunch of pots and pans 😂

FatCatBum · 08/08/2023 20:42

The one I'm most upset about on this thread is bananas. What absolute psychopath eats the bumhole of the banana?!

🤣🤣🤣

Was totally normal to eat Yorkshires with jam for pudding where I came from (in Yorkshire). We also used to have them as a starter before the roast instead of with the roast sometimes, this was a thing from my grandparents' generation and I'm sure there was a reason just can't remember what

coloursofthewind9 · 08/08/2023 20:40

huh? what's wrong with the end of the banana?

It tastes nasty as hell! That little black bit - ugh it's probably a decade since I ate a banana and maybe three since I ate the little black bit and I can still taste it!

Jellywobblescobbles · 08/08/2023 20:43

Really needed a laugh tonight hahaha PEEL MUSHROOMS? who the heck has time for that?! I love mushrooms aswell. 😂

The peanut butter IS the butter!

Absurdly not. I will die on this hill. Peanut butter is way drier than butter and sticks to the roof of your mouth.

Every topping on toast or a sandwich needs butter underneath it. Bread and toast are too dry without it. I wouldn't spread anything, including jam, peanut butter or chocolate spread without a proper butter undercoat.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 08/08/2023 20:25

The non towel sharing families - how do you know whose towel is whose? Does everyone have a different assigned colour? Their names on it? Are the 3/4/5/6 big bath towels in the bathroom at the same time?

Different colours or design. I couldn’t bear to share towels

Dammit. Absolutely not. Not absurdly not. Nothing absurd about my opinion!

Maireas · 08/08/2023 20:45

We did that, @TweetyMcTweetFace . As did all our neighbours. Fireworks in the back garden, set off by dad, all us kids had sparklers! For ages we'd find bits of firework in the garden!

ah this was another thing - I didn’t know that people put sugar on cereal or added it to drinks - I only found out on Pack Holiday with the brownies.

I was also scandalised that they were adding sugar and jam to their eggy bread and they were too when I asked for ketchup!

Fireangels · 08/08/2023 20:45

Merapi · 08/08/2023 19:32

We only found out a few months ago that adult DD and I both see very slightly different colour shades with each eye, and although I'd known for decades that I had it, I never knew hers were like it as well. She never thought to mention it to us because she thought everybody's eyes were like that!

I only discovered a couple of weeks ago that my 27 year old daughter can only wink with her right eye - just like me!

I had a nasty shock when my in laws pulled one small gravy boat out for 14 people! Nothing worse than a dry roast dinner

SiobhanSharpe · 08/08/2023 20:46

In our house growing up there was much competition for any leftover Yorkshire puds (not a common occurrence) because they were just gorgeous, still warm, with a spoonful of jam in the middle. Even better if they had been cooked in savoury, slightly salty beef dripping.
In my house I make plenty of them precisely so there will be leftover ones. Like a dozen just for DS and me. (DH doesn't eat them, the fool.)

Applescruffle · 08/08/2023 20:29

You're clean when you get out of the bath though

Yeah but you dry your pubes with a towel.

I thought that those rocking machine rides in supermarkets only worked with special grandparent money, which was not the same as the money mum or dad had in their pockets. Special grandparent money was the only currency accepted m=by ice cream vans too.

I’m so using this one for my kids!

porridgeisbae · 08/08/2023 20:47

@DropCloths I would totally have butter and peanut butter, it gives it that nice gunginess rather than comparatively solid thickness.

I was never taught I had to wash my belly button. Shock A lover told me to in my early 20s.

sadaboutmycat · 08/08/2023 20:48

How many people are missing that @SpanielsMatter is NOT referring to the U.K. hence the Culture Shock!

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 08/08/2023 20:48

Is this a good time to mention that I had never eaten a Yorkshire pud in my life until my early 20’s?

Even now, 20+ years later, I would say I have only eaten 10 - 20 of them in total.
