Things you didn't know weren't normal

What are things you thought every one or every family did until you became an adult or entered a new relationship?

I'll start. I thought that everyone ate the leftover yorkshires after a roast dinner as desert eg: fill them with cream and fruit or custard or something, basically use them like you would a pancake... no?

I thought everyone peeled mushrooms, I didn't know that not only do people not peel mushrooms, lots don't even know they have peel!! 😱

I'll probably think of more.

Nb: I'm not meaning to trigger anyone's childhood or relationship trauma, I just mean lighthearted things x

Changed my name for this one as many of my RL friends and family know this story.

I believed that Easter Eggs only had one side to them. My mum used to eat half and wrap them back up. I was a teen before I knew that I’d been short changed.

That's unforgivable!!!!!

Do overnight knicker wearers put on a clean pair for bed, or keep on the ones you've worn all day? Or put on a clean pair at night and then carry on wearing them the next day?

I wear knickers overnight. I shower put on a fresh pair. Then in the morning i have a quick freshen up (usually a soapy sluice at the sink I guess) then put on another fresh pair. I was brought up in a family that was not in the least bit poor but my mother had a weird thing about not buying me clothes and I would have to wear her clothes usually the day after she wore them and always a few days of wear each. It included sharing knickers, although they were always clean on, not second day on. She was a smoker and i always smelled. So i am really a bit intense about having fresh clean clothes daily and fresh knickers and not feeling in any way smelly.

It's not until quite recently that I realised how really horrid this was. Only charity shop clothes. Even now I can't bring myself to buy anything other than cheap supermarket clothes.

Shower then clean pair before bed.
Body wash in morning and clean pair on.

We were a 'take any available dry towel' family growing up. It was fine.

Then I moved away for uni, and when I got together with my husband and then had kids, I was still using the towels I'd taken from uni (I still have them!).

We moved a couple of years ago, and I decided that I was going to sort my biggest annoyance of my kids not being able to find a towel for shower night and bought us all new towels. All varying shades of blue, with a matching hand towel and flannel. I ordered personalised labels from Etsy and sewed them on like hooks, so now we all have our own towels that can be hung up when used. I even did a couple of Guest towels as well!

And I haven't had to yell at them once about sorting their towels out since Grin

I can't even imagine how these would come out.
I am imagining some wierd half boiled, half roasted combination but I am sure they were nicer than that.

This is a nice way to do more waxy potatoes - my Greek Cypriot granny would cook hers in a similar way, although the water would have tomato and onion and herbs in it as well. The water would evaporate so you'd get tender spuds with these crispy edges.

That sheep had two shorter legs on one side for walking around hills.

Cheers Grandad

Would that be two shorter front legs or shorter back legs or one short front leg and one short back leg?

How would they turn around? They would surely fall off the hill because of the imbalance. Could they only walk in one direction around the hill???

The black bit at the end just pulls out - or stays in the skin when you peel it!

The rest of the banana is perfectly edible.

...erm yes I do know this...

I was always told that McDonald's was only for if you couldn't get home in time for lunch/tea and you weren't supposed to go to your local one.

For fear that you might be recognised?

Something like this? Looks good.

Greek-Style Potatoes

These Greek potatoes are slow-baked in the oven with rosemary, thyme, garlic, olive oil, and lots of fresh lemon juice in this simple potato recipe.

I thought it was actually illegal to tell someone how you had voted in an election. I was HORRIFIED the first time someone asked me "what!! I can't TELL you!!".
Thanks mum.

looking back, I think she'd probably meant that you don't HAVE to tell anyone how you've voted, not that you'll be thrown in the cells if you do.

Half way up the potatoes is quite a lot of water for it to just evopate though?

I make sure my par-boiled potatoes are dry as a bone before they go in the hot oil. I put them in the fridge to make sure all the water has streamed straight off. So this is alien to me.

Yes like that although Granny's always had tomatoes in too.

And IME they take a LOT longer than expected to cook!

@Applescruffle they take a hell of a lot longer to cook this way so half way up is fine.

At children's parties in Australia, it was traditional to serve white bread with the crusts cut off, liberally spread to the edges with butter, and covered in 100s and 1000s. It was one of the things I was most excited about at my kids 5th birthday and not only did nobody eat them, all the parents were absolutely horrified and looked at me like I was a heathen!! Oh well.

Fairy bread! My Mum is Australian and we always had this, all my friends loved it and I made it for my dd and her friends too

I was horrified the first time I went to someone's house and was given cauliflower cheese with white sauce. My Dad hated the look of white sauces so my Mum used to put a bit of tomato puree in, I thought cauliflower cheese was pink

@SoberIsTheNew50 that must be a lot to unpack as an adult. I hope you can expand your shopping range one day x

I thought this too. I remember being told about it being a secret ballot and I must've taken it to heart. Same as you I remember being shocked when someone started casually discussing their vote and asking about mine!

Applescruffle · 09/08/2023 14:27

You had to share clothes with your mum?

@Merapi I have that too! But it's that one eye the colours are more saturated/red and the other is cooler. Not a huge difference though.

Have you ever had an ophthalmologist look at the back of your eye? I have and they said I've unusual speckles that look like the start of cataracts

I have mentioned it at eye appointments, and they can't see anything untoward at the back of my eyes. They said it is apparently something to do with a difference in number of rods and cones which detect BW/Colour in each eye. Apparently it is nothing to be concerned about, but they did say that if I notice any changes, to let them know.

@BearSoFair So you and your dad have it too? Welcome to the club! Are you both warm/cool in the same eyes, or the opposite way round? DD and I are opposites.

This is interesting - I USED to have it, but I had LASIK done earlier this year and now I no longer have it!

AntiSocial6DaysAWeek · 09/08/2023 15:02

Bread, butter and crisps I can understand and had it a few times as a lazy teen when I wanted a snack (cheese and onion crisps if you're interested!)...but I'm sorry, bread, butter and sprinkles looks and sounds revolting!

Thanks. :)

I have spoken about it a few times on MN before (under a variety of user names) and every time I think i need to really work on it. I'm not quite sure how though. I did buy a pair of sunglasses from a boutique shop a few weeks back though (not from Sainsbos).

TabbyM · 09/08/2023 15:31

Have just realised that I actually miss waving madly at departing guests, all my family (now deceased or far flung) used to do this

Parentswriting · 09/08/2023 15:34

On the sweet Yorkshire Pudding theme, my mum used to bake a massive Yorkie in a turkey tin but mix either rhubarb or raspberries in it before putting it in the oven.

We'd then have it warm as dessert with cream or ice cream.

Mmmm those were the days...and now I'm craving it for dinner so off to find some raspberries 😊

In Australia your registration includes third party fire insurance.

you can add on fully comp or theft yourself but you don't actually need to purchase separate insurance especially if you drive a banger.

your registration also covers TAC which depending on your state will fund private hospital rehab and private hospital for further surgeries if you are injured in a car accident as well as paying your wage when you cannot work. VIC is the most liberal state with this with a no blame standard, some other states require a little more evidence.

I'm in Victoria -- while third party property isn't compulsory, it's still an extraordinarily good idea. This covers you for any accident where you're at fault. Doesn't matter how much of a low value banger your car is, if you hit an expensive car it'll cost you a fortune if you're uninsured.

ArthnoldManacatsaman · 09/08/2023 15:36

@Barold my grandfather used to make a delicious cold remedy using warm lemonade and a big splash of whisky (not given to me as a child, I hasten to add). Best if the lemonade is slightly flat so when I have a cold now I leave some lemonade out on the side ready to pop in the microwave in the evening, provided DH hasn’t drunk it or otherwise got rid of it because he never seems to work out what I’m doing!

There is a Scottish dish called "stovies" and I was an adult when I found out that it's not a standard recipe. Apparently it's a regional thing and the main components change to make it a totally different meal, but with the same name. To me, it's tinned corned beef, potatoes and onion cooked in beef stock and mixed together into a thick bowl of stodge. Heart clogging warming stuff.

A friend said he was making stovies and asked if I wanted to stay for dinner, then presented me with a plate of stewed sausages, potatoes and gravy. Turns out, some people even make it with mince! My gast was flabbered that day.

Our stovies had no meat at all. Just sliced tatties and fried onion. Served with bread and butter and brown sauce.
