Things you didn't know weren't normal

What are things you thought every one or every family did until you became an adult or entered a new relationship?

I'll start. I thought that everyone ate the leftover yorkshires after a roast dinner as desert eg: fill them with cream and fruit or custard or something, basically use them like you would a pancake... no?

I thought everyone peeled mushrooms, I didn't know that not only do people not peel mushrooms, lots don't even know they have peel!! 😱

I'll probably think of more.

Nb: I'm not meaning to trigger anyone's childhood or relationship trauma, I just mean lighthearted things x

Knickers under a nighty is understandable. Knickers under PJs is unnecessary unless you are on your period. I don't have periods due to my contraception so I didn't think of that. Never wear knickers under PJs. In fact I currently in my PJs and completly knickerless as I type 😁

Having butter and peanut butter on toast. Totally normal in my family, every time I've done it in front of someone else they've reacted as if I'm eating like late era Elvis.

Always !!

isthismylifenow · 09/08/2023 12:35

Knickers all the time here.

I think they are my security blanket.

I cannot sleep if I'm not wearing any.

so then do you change your PJs every day? I'd find the potential gusset-contact meant I'd think of them as akin to knickers, whereas if I wear knickers under PJs I can wear the same PJs for a couple of nights

I do tend to wash them after one night, maybe two, but always if I have worn them into the next day like I've done today.
BUT maybe it's the type of PJs people are wearning? because mine are loose, I do not go for legging-type PJ bottoms that would make a lot of contact with my foofaloofa

ah yes, more aeration in the loose ones too!

My parents convinced us there was a “birthday bunny”, the same way there is an Easter bunny and santa. My friends were looking at me like I had two heads when I mentioned this.

We have a birthday fairy! She decorates the house with balloons etc.

I still remember the look of horror on his face the first time my DH saw me eating peanut butter and jam on toast. His mum thought peanut butter was revolting, so he'd never had it before - he loves it now. And as for adding jam..! But my mum is Canadian, so I grew up with this and thought everyone ate it.

All my siblings are still like this (as am I), and their spouses joke about it. First time I had a roast dinner (lamb) at my ILs I asked my then bf (quietly) where the mint sauce was as it hadn't occurred to me that other houses mightn't have the same rules. I do now carry a wee tube of Coleman's with me (as does Nigella Lawson I think) in case I encounter something that 'needs' it. Any Christmas I spent with my in laws I always brought Cranberry sauce for the turkey as I can't eat it without it. My ILs are sadly passed away and we don't really do roasts at home, so I'm generally safe on that count.

Absolutely in love with the idea of an emergency on the go Colmans, just in case. Might have to adopt this, but it would be mayo for me. Probably slightly grim to let it get sweaty out and about in my bag, but needs must 😂

Its quite normal where I live too. Along with peanut butter and syrup sandwiches.

I am in the double butter club though. But you can't let the syrup touch the butter. As it crystallises... 😃 So just a small smooth layer of butter first.

Applescruffle · 09/08/2023 12:53

My parents (especially wanker stepdad) were weirdly xenophobic about Americans and everything American. Probably something to do with step-dad's time in the army.
Anyway, I was taught that anything American is vile, including peanut butter and jam. It just wasn't allowed. They even hated peanut butter for being American but mum bought it for me because she insisted it was important for me as a vegetarian to get the nut protein.

When I became an adult, I tried peanut butter and jam together and was disappointed I didn't like it. I really wanted to like it just to spite evil step-wanker.

If it makes you feel better OP my mum peels mushrooms and believed everyone did. She was shocked and appalled when she saw me just give them a wipe and fling them in the pan!

I honestly don't GAF if people peel them or not and I don't even eat or cook them now.
I just don't understand why people are saying they can't be peeled or don't have peel when clearly they do 😂

I think you may have used the wrong jam. Apricot is the one. Nothing fancy, just that bog standard smooth one.

Failing that, you can always try the syrup, I with you here in beating team step-wanker.

But we haven't discussed whether the peanut butter should be smooth or crunchy.

Imo smooth is better on a sarmie. I like crunchy plain on hot toast with the butter melted.

Honestly, I just don't think any combination will be for me. I don't really like the sweetness and the not-so-sweet together like that. I also don't like jam in a sandwich, only on toast. When I tried PB and Jam together, it was on taost. Cold sounds way worse.
Horrible, abusive step-dad is now, and his homophobia, racism, sexism and wierdness about Americans with him. So sod him.

This is so interesting to me! I've found people are mostly one or the other - my PILs for example are a dinner at the table absolutely no excuses kind of family, so much so that when we persuaded them to get a Dominos one time FIL still got all the table mats, cutlery and plates out and laid the table. I was aghast. I know I eat all dinners on the sofa but surely even table families eat a Dominos in front of the telly?!

I think I'm going to aspire to be like you - mix and match. So no one is shocked if we eat at the table (like my family) but also happy to have a chilled sofa dinner when it's wanted and needed.

Table family here, we’d still eat pizza at the table, never eat in front of the TV.

Applescruffle · 09/08/2023 13:17

We put pizza on the coffee table, DH and I usually on the sofa, kids spread on the floor. So kindaaa at the table still, but also really not.

It's a question of preference - in my family we like our food hot, so cook/disher up always tells people to start eating when they're served.

Basic manners to wait. If everyone kicks in serving up/taking to the table, everyone gets hot food.

That steak takes an hour to cook (seriously, this is how my dad cooked it. Massive slabs of grey meat).

Yep, I grew up in a household where all meat was cooked well done. Oh, and it was always "chops". I didn't come to really appreciate steak until I was older, and started eating different cuts, cooked to lower temperatures, etc.

What do you mean about the roast potatoes? She boiled them first, then roasted them? This is perfectly normal. Literally everyone from Jamie Oliver to me Nan does this. It's how you make roast potatoes
Or do you mean something else?

Totally different! Potatoes in roasting tin, then pour boiling water around them (about halfway up the potatoes) then pour a little oil over the tops that were sticking out. They weren’t horrible or anything, just not like anyone else’s roasties!

ml01omm · 09/08/2023 13:31

I didn't know that people had Yorkshire puddings with roast dinners until I went to Uni.

We had a roast religiously every Sunday my entire childhood. never a single yorkshire ever appeared. not at Christmas, not at Easter. Never. I thought it was a thing that just people in Yorkshire had.

Then went to Uni (not in Yorkshire) and was shocked that Yorkshire puddings were a thing. And bread sauce. Never had bread sauce in my life until then. I've since made up for it on both fronts.

Violinist64 · 09/08/2023 13:34

@LylaLee thank you. I am semi retiring after nearly forty years as a piano, violin and viola teacher and accompanist. I will carry on with the music in some form or another for the rest of my life, hopefully.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 09/08/2023 13:34

Do overnight knicker wearers put on a clean pair for bed, or keep on the ones you've worn all day? Or put on a clean pair at night and then carry on wearing them the next day?

I can't even imagine how these would come out.
I am imagining some wierd half boiled, half roasted combination but I am sure they were nicer than that.
